holly shit a human freight train with tree trunk legs, great cutting and Quick change of direction ability, great acceleration and solid speed, he also ran smart and low. damn wish i got to see him play in real life what a beast.
he is my fav running back ever! I loved his brutal style of running and he had some good speed too. This video was a video of a real fucking man people.
2:50 Might have been the toughest running I have ever seen. If you end a play after cracking a mans rib cage, and wearing a shredded jersey, you can just run into the hall of fame yourself.
Respond to this video? WOW! Earl put da fear in them defenses, and he still would today and I'm no Oilers fan...Remember watching that Raider-Oiler game as a kid, seeing Tatum put that lick on him at the goal line...They were both out after that play...Concussions...
@AntiSchiff yes he did, but i cant recall a DB that ever put a lick on Earl quite like that..Tatum was actually a team mate of Earl's in 1980 after Oakland traded him for RB Kenny King..its just unfortunate that Earl never won a Ring
Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??
#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) EARL CAMPBELL???
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
I mean this guy is an amazing athlete but if u put someone modern in those time they could probably do this the defense were not very good... for example just rematch the video and look at the linebacker's persuit angles....and don't tell me I don't know shit because I'm a runningback
I can see why he fumbled a lot at the begginning of his career. He is just basically just holding the ball with only his hand. Doesn't really matter if you are that good of a runningback though
Most of y'all were too young to remember. I was in the Astrodome, for the homecoming celebrations after the Pittsburgh Ripoff. All you yankee indoor sport fans (wrestling, basketball, badmitton....) pay attention! This is a Texas Boy who played for Texas teams! Football is KING in Texas! Don't believe? Come on down to any town on Friday night and see for yourself. What two states produce the most NFL players? Cali and Texas!
The Tyler Rose is such a fitting name for Earl Campbell. To see someone run with such a rare combination of power, speed, and elusiveness is a thing of beauty.
@DntGivAhFuhk i don't think he get the as much credit as he deserves as one of the all time greats. all i see is barry.walter.or emmitt. this man gave up his body and soul for the game. hell he can't hardly walk anymore. i can't imagine the pain this man goes through everyday now. his first 4 seasons in the NFL is legendary. 3 straight rushing titles,NFL MVP. not to mention his Heisman in college. sure his career was short but it was something to behold. give the man his DUE!!
I've never seen such a combination of power, speed, and nimbleness.
Lots of good footage in this video, not just the same five clips everybody has seen a million times. If I could pick any RB for a football team, he'd get my vote.
Shame the NFL network top 100 rated him so low. Sporting News had it right putting him up higher. Putting him lower than Emmit makes no sense to me and never will. I watched all these guys and no one had the total package like he did.
Earl Campbell. The only RB who could run around you, through you, and take you along for the ride. He could out muscle DE, DT's and LB..and he had the speed to outrun corner backs and DBs. Best combination of speed and power I have ever seen.
@2:49 did you notice that HALF of ALL the players on the field for the LA Rams are within one foot of Campbell and they all failed to tackle him, either b/c they were affraid or they just couldn't or it. Crazy!!
Earl Campbell is my absolute favorite power runner because he just doesn't care. His shirt is out, he carries the ball with one hand, he's hopping on one foot, he leans forward in punishing manner when he runs ready to deliver a blow rather than take one. This guy is a freak'n brute.
you could take Earl, Payton, Sanders, & Dickerson and have hours of the most incredible highlights. I know there are plenty of others, but those four to me always had you on edge.
after watching this....gently shove ur head up ur ass if u still think bo jackson was a better power runner than campbell......campbell was the entire package with longevity ....bo knows nothing!!
@xYoungxNilox I think Dave Elmendorf did retire after a Campbell collision. I once saw a NE (I think) DB try the theoretical "hit him low" technique. I've never seen a human being crumple like that before or since. It was UG-LY!
Pause it at 3:18. Tatum just put a full steam running hit on Earl and snapped Campbell's upper torso backwards at the goal line. Now Tatum's on the ground looking up just in time to see Earl has recovered enough to fall INTO the endzone. Look at Tatum's (32) expression. Even through the face mask you can plainly see "Sonofabitch, he still scored. WTF?!"
@YungBobbySeal That play was the only reason I was watching this vid. Quite possibly the greatest power run I've ever seen. Doesnt even think about it, just drops his head, goes downhill and crushes a linebackers sternum.
@flightaddictalex But given his present physical state, it wasn't worth it. While Franco Harris was ridiculed for running our of bounds, he can walk today.
3:09 aint really a high light cause i was at that game an i think i was cheering more for Tatum for the hit. i was sitting in the nose bleeds on the other side of the stadium and heard that collision it was NASTY
@iHaveAGimangoPenis And yet he STILL ate that hit and stumbeled FORWARD for 2 yards quickly enough to make it into the endzone before those other 2 defenders got there. Yeah, that's a career highlight.
I came here because I was watching Michael Turner, 250lber, tear up Philly, and he's got that freakishly big lower half like Campbell, and I wanted to compare
Earl looks different, is smaller and proportioned differently [shorter, more evenly distributed, less ass]
and was somehow a far more punishing/shiftier runner than Turner
'unsung' clip is Earl throwing that DB with one hand 3-4 yards while being tackled 0:20
scary
best is the college clip of him shouldering a defender 6 yards for TD
@2:50 Has to be my favorite play all time in the NFL. Spears the guy, knocks him down, carries 2 defenders a few yards while they rip off his jersey and it requires a third to come in and driver him to the ground. I saw this play at the Football Hall of Fame last summer and it I thought it was amazing.

Watch where he headbutts the guy; he was running the play, defender came up, and in an instant, used all of strength two feet of the guy and trucked though. THAT is something special.
@bullss21 I like your post because Earl Campbell is thought of as just a brute. You saw that wasn't so, he had great field vision , sprinter speed and knew how to read his blockers . 9er die hard and Raider fan it wasn't easy to post this but Mr Campbell was a badd Man
FINALLY !!! a football vid w/o rap or rock!!! YAAAAY!! good job bro!! Im making a football vid and I WILL be jacking some of yor footage! its nice and clean! just a heds up! : )
Wow, what an AMAZING, I mean, AMAZING player! Such a punishing runner. I read his bio and it's really sad how he's going through lots of pain and really struggling now from his football days. He needs a wheelchair at times. That's so sad.
It's a tough call with all these new NFL regulations about protecting the player cuz those jaw dropping hits is what makes football FOOTBALL, but then you see past players like Campbell developing some serious issues from all the hits. :(
Big Earl Campbell meets Jack Tatum 'the assassin' head-on at 3:10 for one of the best bone crashing impacts, that had Earl and the Assassin both knock-out cold.
This was football at its worst. The 70s and early 80s was nothing but bad football. Look at the way Campbell carries the ball with one arm on contact. Campbell is a power runner and every1 tackles him up high and waits until Campbell initates the contact. Even Defensive Backs today, tackle better than that. Just awful
@Tmurda2k5 do you even know what football is? or are you some rugby loving brit trolling this video? the 70's and 80's were probably the best decades for defenses. we had the steelers steel curtain D-line with jack lambert and jack ham at linebackers, we had the bears defense in the mid 80's, one of the greatest defenses ever, some people even make a case for them being #1, we had the vicious oakland raiders defense with howie long and jack tatum, 70's-80's = most vicious defensive decades.
I dont mean to disrespect a Hall of Famer but this is horrible technique in carrying the football...He constantly holds the ball away from his body in one arm EVEN ON CONTACT. In Todays NFL, the ball would be stripped from him waaay too much. Sorry but its true .
@bruush310 Sorry Bruush I didnt realize that Earl Campbell was still in the NFL. I also would like to let u know that its Never to late to apply for a library card.
And I never said I would of tackled Campbell....I just said that in TODAYS NFL HE WOULD GET THE BALL RIPPED FROM HIM. I would love to see a Patrick Willis lay Campbell out.
@Tmurda2k5 and yet he's failed to let that happen and he plowed through everyone on the field... You may not be good enough to do it, but he sure as hell is
@CEO1451 Earl is not in the best of shape nowadays either.. He has had knee replacements, three vertebrae have fused together and he is often in a wheelchair.
No runner had Earl's combination of size, speed, power, elusiveness. He was the complete back. He could out run you, out juke you and run over you. I am not quite ready to call him the greatest of all time but if I had to choose one back in his prime for one full season it would be Earl.
Back then there was no "5-yard" rule; so, the CB's and safeties could stick the receivers to get them out of the way. Which, to me, makes Campbell's end runs all the more impressive.
Earl was one of the greatest to ever play the game. I dare anyone to challange the fact that in his prime he would still be one of the top running backs even today.
Ih his career had lasted longer than this man would have my vote as probably the best RB of all time. In his time though there were none better and to this day when they refer to powerbacks they are often called an "Earl Campbell" type. If I were picking a team an Earl Campbell would be my back.

mattmonsterful 6 months ago
Wow, what an AMAZING, I mean, AMAZING player! Such a punishing runner. I read his bio and it's really sad how he's going through lots of pain and really struggling now from his football days. He needs a wheelchair at times. That's so sad.
It's a tough call with all these new NFL regulations about protecting the player cuz those jaw dropping hits is what makes football FOOTBALL, but then you see past players like Campbell developing some serious issues from all the hits. :(

Earl Campbell...
The best running back since Jim Brown.
One of two athletes I miss most. The other one is "Magic" Johnson.

Big Earl Campbell meets Jack Tatum 'the assassin' head-on at 3:10 for one of the best bone crashing impacts, that had Earl and the Assassin both knock-out cold.

@patrickisready Great hit for sure prob my second fav only to steve atwater on christian okoye. These two hits give me goosebumps when i watch them

Big Earl Campbell rams head-on into a linebacker at 2:50, with an punishing run.
patrickisready 7 months ago
This was football at its worst. The 70s and early 80s was nothing but bad football. Look at the way Campbell carries the ball with one arm on contact. Campbell is a power runner and every1 tackles him up high and waits until Campbell initates the contact. Even Defensive Backs today, tackle better than that. Just awful
Tmurda2k5 7 months ago
@Tmurda2k5 You're just awful...
overby1796 7 months ago 18
@Tmurda2k5 do you even know what football is? or are you some rugby loving brit trolling this video? the 70's and 80's were probably the best decades for defenses. we had the steelers steel curtain D-line with jack lambert and jack ham at linebackers, we had the bears defense in the mid 80's, one of the greatest defenses ever, some people even make a case for them being #1, we had the vicious oakland raiders defense with howie long and jack tatum, 70's-80's = most vicious defensive decades.

2:50 Earl Campbell Raming a Ram... love the Irony...
ChiefsBulls587 7 months ago
I dont mean to disrespect a Hall of Famer but this is horrible technique in carrying the football...He constantly holds the ball away from his body in one arm EVEN ON CONTACT. In Todays NFL, the ball would be stripped from him waaay too much. Sorry but its true .

@Tmurda2k5 well he is in the nfl and ure not so shut the fuck up rip off ure middle finger and shove it up ure ass

Tmurda2k5 7 months ago
@Tmurda2k5 yeah if they wanted a broken face trying to go for the ball

@Tmurda2k5 and yet he's failed to let that happen and he plowed through everyone on the field... You may not be good enough to do it, but he sure as hell is

natureboyinyourface 7 months ago
No runner had Earl's combination of size, speed, power, elusiveness. He was the complete back. He could out run you, out juke you and run over you. I am not quite ready to call him the greatest of all time but if I had to choose one back in his prime for one full season it would be Earl.

Ruger1000fps 8 months ago
Back then there was no "5-yard" rule; so, the CB's and safeties could stick the receivers to get them out of the way. Which, to me, makes Campbell's end runs all the more impressive.

Earl was one of the greatest to ever play the game. I dare anyone to challange the fact that in his prime he would still be one of the top running backs even today.
watulu1 9 months ago
Ih his career had lasted longer than this man would have my vote as probably the best RB of all time. In his time though there were none better and to this day when they refer to powerbacks they are often called an "Earl Campbell" type. If I were picking a team an Earl Campbell would be my back.

Chuck Norris wishes he could bring down Earl Campbell
overby1796 10 months ago 70
@overby1796 The only reason Chuck Norris doesn't destroy Earl is because Earl works with Chuck. He's known as 'Runner, Texas Ranger.'
DanVelinski 7 months ago
@overby1796 well considering the fact he has been tackled im pretty sure chuck norris could round house him to the face and he would go down.
