I remember my dad had the single on tape, at time we had a Escort and I remember it very well. I live in Sunderland, and I also remember bombing around the back roads near the Nissan plant playing this song back to back! Everytime I hear this song I love it more and more.
I would have been 12 when this add was shown, and it has stuck in my memory for the last 20 years! The scene with the tractor and the rally car at 1:30 look exactly how I remembered them. I'd never heard music like it in an advert before. I was a Queen fan even then, but didn't realise it was Brian until some weeks later. Awesome stuff!
I still like to have a watch from time to time Glynn, hope all is well and your ST looks nice. I heard about the issue with traction control kicking in because of different tyre manufacturers producing slightly different profile sizes. Hope you get it sorted mate.
Wow, you were part of it! Must be a lovely feeling.
I have a Focus ST now myself, and it's an amazing car. Just need to sort out the issue with the traction control kicking in all the time because I fitted new front tyres.. Hmmmm.....
It's interesting that it came at a time when Ford's European product range was arguably at its weakest for a long time,The Fiesta was reasonable, but not stunning, the mkV Escort (Cossie aside) was being given a thorough kicking by the press, and the Sierra was a decent car, but very long in the tooth, Yet watching this somehow made it all look so glamorous and high tech, The Cossie was a real people's hero and I love the way this ad plays on that. Fantastic marketing, and a great ad!.
I worked for Ford at the time and the full version was shown in the middle of News at Ten on ITV - took up the whole slot. In those days you had to bid for that primetime slot so it cost Ford a fortune which is why the shorter version was mainly used after the first week or two.
I remember how proud we (the workers) all were when we saw it. I have my original VHS tape somewhere!
I remember this ad, was always pee'd off when it was shown in its shorter 30 sec version but once in a while they'd show the full one. When ads were ads for cars and when Fords still built classics.
At ford we make our motors right,Good cars with all the things you like,
Well made with practicality,Big boots for all those shopping bags,Lots of room for all the legs and lags,Good drive with powersteering too!Oooh you'll be forgiven if you think you're dreaming but we're working night and day to make good cars too,uhh every ford we do is driven by youuuu!
Agree with a lot of the posters on here - great ad, I remember seeing the full length version on TV (the only other company to have adverts this long was Wollworths at Christmas) so it really stuck in my head - great soundtrack, great imagery - I drive Ford cars and have this track on my Queen 3 album (although I know its Brian May solo song)... My right foot presses down a bit harder when that solo kicks in... great post - thanks for sharing!!!
Btw way I'll try and find out more..a friend of mines father worked at Dagenham ford in the 80's &90's..hopefully he may either know or be able to find out! Once again many thanks for this vid..it may look a little cheesy to the cynic now..but in the context of the era it was great! As you say the best car ad ever..I can remember being amazed by it..perhaps that's the reason for my distorted memory !
This was the full length version mostly filmed at Fords test track in Lommel, as a Ford man I have the 'making of' video which I was given at the time - when I get round to it I will post it to You Tube.
hey thanks for the reply!..I think you may well be right...I'm off to get a new memory stick for my brain! :-)...but having slept on this over night. (yeah I know..should have better things to think about !)..I can remember the first showing was the only advert in the ad slot ..& yes you are right about the 30 sec length of ads..so that would have made the original total around 3 mins which was roughly the advert time slot then..>>anyway great ad..thanks for posting!
This version is 1:35 or so, which I think must make it the full version. Adverts in the UK are generally 30 seconds, so the shorter one you refer to would have been 30 seconds.
I uploaded this directly from the original video sent to me by the production firm 'Ogilvy' who made the advert, so I can only assume this is the full version.
Oh, and by the way, your memory can play tricks. Before I got the video I was convinced the rally car was the new Escort Cosworth.. but it's not, it's the Sierra Saphire Cosworth 4x4 on the advert. The Escort Cosworth advert came shortly after, but wasn't as good as this one.
@glynharper you know, i was also convinced I saw an escort cossie on this advert, it was a long time ago tho and yet this advert still sticks in my head.
can someone help me out?..this is the "real" Ford Ad sure enough..but I'm convinced it's first screening on british tv was much longer with race/ rally cars etc...The full version was shown around Christmas time..Christmas day I seem to remember?..this is the shorter edited version which followed..or am I loosing it?Help! :-)
This was one of the best car ads ever made which is why I posted it. At the time it was running on TV, I had a Mk 3 Escort RS Turbo, and the ad made me so proud.
If I had space to keep one now, I'd try and find another one to restore, and take out on summers days.
My father worked for Fords until 1991 (this advert appeared the year following). He was given a video package of this; It was the full length commercial (not the shorter version), plus the making of the advert, analysing the set up and execution of the majority of the scenes shot; more absorbing than the finished piece. The next time I speak to my father, I'll ask him where it was all assembled in terms of stunt venue; it may be on the video itself, I haven't watched it for maybe 4-5 years.
It's a shame that Ford has to have different products for the US market, instead of using Europe's models. The new Taurus is nice, but it's too expensive. Give us Australia's Falcon instead; rear-drive, proven technology, and it works. Ford could cut its costs significantly by giving us Europe's and Australia's models instead of having US-unique cars. Please Keep the Crown Victoria though.
I was only eight when I saw the commercial and I loved it for the music, the funny thing is that at that time I did not know it was Brian May despite the fact that I had already been a Queen fan for two years ;))
Brain has been involved with tv projects before - type in Startfleet intro in to youtube and see what comes up he also wrote the music for 2 of the madmax films.
I love Fords - got a Focus ST mk2 at the moment. But yes the one bad thing about Fords generally are their paintwork. Still got some way to go yet. Most Escorts here in Scotland are also painfully rusty as are most mk4/5 Fiesta's and mk2 Mondeos (some of which aren't even 10 years old yet) which is a crying shame :-(
I dont recogonize any of those cars. Must be foreign Ford. They make better cars for them and they keep the shit Ford's here in America. Great stuff ..lol
This song was not written specifically for this commercial. It is from Mays 1992 solo album -Back To The Light-.
Anytime any song is used in a commercial, it cheapens it and takes away from the uniqueness and the beauty of the song. Same as letting politicians use it on their campaigns.
Agreed!!! Ford haven't exactly made rememberable adverts of recent. The last decent TV ad Ford made that I remember was for the launch of the Mk2 Mondeo Zetec model...which was 1999 I think. Yikes thats 10 years ago! They should make a cool advert for the new Fiesta using clips from Jeremy Clarksons road test from Top Gear :-D
Guilty pleasure tune for me; it's ridiculously catchy - Brian did the job well, considering it's supposed to be a...well... a jingle, essentially! Love it!
Why COULDN'T WE HAVE THE EURO MODELS HERE IN THE U.S.? I KNOW THE MERKUR XR4TI WAS A SIERRA, BUT IT DIDN'T LAST, AND IT WAS A GREAT CAR. IT SEEMS THAT THE EUROPEANS GET LOTS OF THE GOOD "STUFF," AND I WISH THAT WE COULD GET IT HERE!
You guys should be getting the new Ford Fiesta soon - What Car? of the Year 2009. Provided Ford of America don't mess with the european suspension settings (like I'm sure they did on the mk1 Focus when it arrived) you'll have a wee gem there when it arrives.
God this makes me feel old this really takes me bk to my childhood remember the music and of course remember Ford's from the 1990's apart from current Mondeo they were much nicer n better cars back then as u had thinks like the awesome Granada Scorpio Cosworth now thats a hot car my uncle still has his its a real Q car
What a load of nonsense. Ok, the new Focus in standard guise isn't that exciting but there's nothing bland or inferior about the styling or quality of the range. And it's the forthcoming RS, not Cosworth
Apart from the Current sxi Mondeo I much more prefer the Fiesta,Escort,Mondeo,Granada Scorpio etc from the 1990's than the cars from Ford Current range i so remember this advert really takes me bk to my childhood xxx
love this tune love this vid love all the 1990's cars in it too really takes me back to my childhood wish they made cars like this now but with ABS,Airbags,Sat Nav etc they had some real nice class cars back then xx
By the end of 2009 they would've completely changed nearly every model in their line up since 2006. A new Ka is due out this year and a new Fiesta next year. The focus has had a facelift and the new mondeo is excellent. The Galaxy is cool and then there's the S-Max. Not to mention the new Kuga due out late 2008 or early 2009!!! Go on the Ford!!! Driven by you indeed!!! Love it!
The Mondeo saved Ford in the UK, all the cars in this ad were well past their prime, the Sierra was reshelled Cortina, The Granada was another cosmetic rehash, although a very good car, and the escort and orion were getting hammered by the Astra. I had nothing but Fords for years, but I had to go to other makes because they had better cars for the same or less money. I have a MK2 Mondeo now and it's a nicer drive than the Merc it replaced.
Yeah, I heard that underneath the cutting-edge looks some of the Sierra's underpinnings were less than revolutionary. Still, at least it looked good at the time.
The Mondeo may have been a better car (don't know, I've never driven one) but I never liked the look of them- boring 90s repmobile blandness, even after they added the more distinctive lights. The current version looks better though, but they should have chosen a new name!
Apart from the legend that was/is the Escort Cosworth, this is probably the time in recent memory when Ford's range was at its weakest. The Sierra was ancient and about to be replaced, the Escort had been universally panned in the press, and the Fiesta and Granada were not exactly cutting edge. Yet this ad generates a real feel good factor. Its stuff like this that makes marketing people worth every penny. Great find!
I remember the advert been on TV and it sold the brand to me as a kid and since then I have had 3 Ford Fiesta's and 2 Ford Escort's so I guess it was very, very clever brainwashing!
Thanks for posting the proper full length one, not the corporate version which is much less good! Any fans of the full 2 min plus advert for Peugeot 406 set to M people and Search for the Hero, type "peugeot 406 m people" and enjoy!

His song Driven By You, originally penned for a Ford advert, became his first solo hit record.

You are correct, I did not know that.
I am not really a fan of Brian's solo stuff. it is not very good.

The track scenes are Ford's Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium. The rigs are in Dunton, Essex.

I had an XR2, an XR3, an XR3i, an RS Turbo and a Ford Orion. Superb cars. (well, apart from the Orion).

An advert that I loved when I first saw it way back in the early 1990s, and one that I still love today :)

Thanks for posting the proper full length one, not the corporate version which is much less good! Any fans of the full 2 min plus advert for Peugeot 406 set to M people and Search for the Hero, type "peugeot 406 m people" and enjoy!

My dad has driven Fords since 1968 and I doubt if he'll ever change- this is why! Cheesy commercials!
