I love Jaime Lee as Mimi, because she just seems so badass, and carefree, like she actually is Mimi. She really expresses what I think the character is like through her performance, and I really look up to her as a performer.
no rosario isn't bad -- far from it. but one has to acknowledge that she has somewhat of advantage -- she doesn't actually have to sing and dance at the same time, since it was recorded before hand -- which btw, also means it's not live. filming a musical is diff from performing it on stage. rosario may very well be able to do it on stage, but we won't know unless she actually does, and then at that point would be a much fairer comparison.
i like Renee Goldsberry's better. Kirchner seems to be trying a little too hard. But i do like how all the actresses who play mimi aren't afraid to add in new things.
I like how true they stayed to the actual play here. and not just the movie. while the movie is good, the play is so much more complex and intriguing. Renee Goldsberry is definitely the best Mimi because she was the most compelling and believeable on brodway. being in a film is so much easier than being live on stage.

Drugs have that effect on your voice, even if you don't inhale them. They make it scratchier and quieter, like Rosario. The looks, however, I've got to give to Rosario. I'm not sure why, but she just... looks like Mimi.

mimi isnt supposed to have a pretty voice necessarily, its really more about the attitude. she might be a little pitchy but she can definitely pull off mimi's toughness. plus, its barely possible to even breathe at the end of this song so being able to do it at all is impressive! i personally think this is an AMAZING performance

Yes, but if the race of the character can change, so can the dance moves! I'm not talking RADICAL change from the choreography, but for example look at Renee's version. There's something more distinctive than "oh, it's a different actress".
Each actress or actor does each character a little differently, how they sing the song, their gestures or facial expressions...this dance is one of those where they do what ever they feel is "sexy" enough for the scene. Productions are rarley cookie cutter versions of the origional

Does no one understand that RENT is a -rock- opera, not just a bunch of pop songs? You have to have a gritty singing voice, it's just like saying Hannah Montanna is heavy metal. Just freaking no. It's why Jaime and Daphne work so well in the role.
I agree that you have to sound stronger and yes, a little rougher, to hold your own against the music in RENT. However, I think the major issue with Jaime - and especially Daphne - is they both /sound/ a lot older than 19 and look older than 16, meaning that while they sound great in the songs, they don't sound the way Mimi probably should. They're both brilliant anyway though. :)
Why can't people EVER just love the spirit of Mimi instead of knocking the different actresses? They all brought something unique to the character. Maybe we prefer one side to another, but there's absolutely no reason to HATE a particular actress if you truly love the show and the character.

okay..with this whole rosario sucks things: she doesn't suck. but, on the other hand, she is not one of the best mimi's. even though she did do her singing, they had to "spiff" it up a little bit because rosario is not a conventional singer. i think that jamie is a good mimi. she has great energy and a nice, raw voice. but, i agree wit the people who say renee is the best. love that girl!

Gah, but even Karen Mok spiced it up a bit! I mean, this is essentially Daphne without the Latina accent. And if we're doing everything exactly the same, they should all have that accent.
But they don't! and it's okay! The actress should put something of themselves into it... the words are the same, the routine doesn't have to be.

Yes, but if the race of the character can change, so can the dance moves! I'm not talking RADICAL change from the choreography, but for example look at Renee's version. There's something more distinctive than "oh, it's a different actress".

Each actress or actor does each character a little differently, how they sing the song, their gestures or facial expressions...this dance is one of those where they do what ever they feel is "sexy" enough for the scene. Productions are rarley cookie cutter versions of the origional

and this person would like to see the same moves, but with the new actress personality in it, and if you have an accent that gives you a certian typecast on stage, then maybe try to incorporate that in your moves! so that accent moves and type fits together! without losing the MIMI touch :D

Does no one understand that RENT is a -rock- opera, not just a bunch of pop songs? You have to have a gritty singing voice, it's just like saying Hannah Montanna is heavy metal. Just freaking no. It's why Jaime and Daphne work so well in the role.

I agree that you have to sound stronger and yes, a little rougher, to hold your own against the music in RENT. However, I think the major issue with Jaime - and especially Daphne - is they both /sound/ a lot older than 19 and look older than 16, meaning that while they sound great in the songs, they don't sound the way Mimi probably should. They're both brilliant anyway though. :)

Why can't people EVER just love the spirit of Mimi instead of knocking the different actresses? They all brought something unique to the character. Maybe we prefer one side to another, but there's absolutely no reason to HATE a particular actress if you truly love the show and the character.

No one who has seen the actual stage show would ever choose Rosario as the best Mimi. There's no way she could ever handle singing the role eight times a week live. She was fine for the film but she's not strong enough to do the stage show.

Rosario Dawson? You can't deny her "OOOOUUUT tonight" key change notes were smooth and clear even in her untouched audition, Plus she is drop dead gorgeous. I dont like that people hate on her like she's the worst Mimi EVER just because she probably couldnt make it on broadway. Truth is, she SOLD that movie.
