Well, my old Nokia 5300 can boot up Series 40 in twelved seconds, and takes my MacBook Pro almost a whole minute. See, I can make dumb comparisons too.
these kinds of tests are subject to hardware so they aren't always accurate. not to mention which version you have (32 or 64 bit.) on my machine on 1GB of ram anda 2.2 ghz 64 bit cpu, ubuntu 64 and vista 64 take the same amount of time, but the 32 bit of ubuntu is quicker. see? alot of variables to take into consideration before flaming either OS and/or the person doing the review of it.
No but this is real life stuff!. My brother is got a vaio that is supposed to be supreme, and HECK, it gets like a DIZZZILION years to OPEN ANY APPLICATION!!!, Duuuude, isnt supposed to be better than Windows 98???? WHAT THE HECK IS IT DOING!!. But I have an inspiron, a little older and use Ubuntu 10.04 which works great fast and silent, no misterious internet activity or file reading. I'm waiting for a google os netbook also, it's gonna be great!.
windows 7 should have been against ubuntu 10.04 and not its predecessor..but still ubuntu won....
and about the mac thing ...macbooks usually have good specs.... install ubuntu 10.04 (lucid lynx) on any good or atleast above average computer and you'll see who's the best!!!
Chrome OS doesn't take time to load because you have no hard drive...well you don't have datas a on it they are all online on a server or idk how it works. In the end when you boot the OS it doesn't have to load all the datas and apps and shit that Windows, Mac or any OS would normally have to load. That's why Chrome OS' boot time is faster.
I use Linux Mint, (I know it's Ubuntu) It takes about 40-45 seconds from boot to being online. I have set it up so Chrome starts up automatically too. I love it.
this is so stypid. everybody know that windows seven is faster, but to start up maybe xp and ubuntu and so on, is faster: but after windows seven is running IT PWNS
If you want an advice, use Arch Linux. Is difficult to configure, and to get started; but after some time it become the best OS by far. And try to test the boot of a Arch Linux. It will be blow you away.
Second, you are running Win 7 with probably the worst antivirus program in the world. You should do this test with a no antivirus installation on Windows, or at least with a non-resources-devourer antivirus (try NOD32 or MS Security Essentsials, especially this).
Finally, you can compare the boot operation of your computer with a different computer. It has no sense at all!!!!
I would like to say that this test is totally bad planned.
First of all, you can't compare Windows 7 with the rest of the OS because you have a lot of programs installed on Win 7 and almost nothing in Ubuntu. Is very typical in a Win program to create some sucky-process to see its updates (lot of time of booting lost in this stupid things).
@ehecutor ehm, in ubuntu doesnt matter how many programs you have installed, its boot the same time not like in windows. And in ubuntu you have plenty programs preinstaled.
I am using Windows 7 RC still and going Ubuntu because its free. 7 is a great OS and my custom build desktop booted less then 45 sec and shut down less then 15 sec. Its a lot better then Vista. 7 home is $200 and I do not want to spend that much. Rather have XP pro 64 bit if I could find one. ? is I cannot find Ubuntu 64 bit.
as i said it took longer to load anything up. The desktop loads up quicker on windows 7 and so do all apps.
I tried to like ubuntu, i really did. I have tried it on 3 different computers and it was just the same. Even on my netbook, win7 is faster.. i mean wtf
As i dont particularly like microsoft as a company, i would like to be using linux instead. Oh and dont think i paid for win7, those greedy bastards arnt getting any of my money.
Boot times are all relative - depends what you have in that system - If you have a Solid state hard drive the system starts very very fast compared to a normal hard drive. Also it depends on how much RAM is on the computer. However Ubuntu is made better and is able to start faster on same base resources.
And by the way, don't let my comments mislead you to think I'm a 'windows fanboy' as you put it. I happen to have all three OS's running on two different computers.
I simply notice when someone makes comparisons and doen't make them equal. After all, whats the point to compare anything if you comparison is faulted and biased.
It simply means that the compare-er doesn't mind to show their bias on the given situation.
Biases sucks and only prohibits real understanding.
Why would you wait for it to shut down to close the lid? That seems like a waste of time. Try this, hit the shut down button, then close the lid = no waiting. Amazing.
As far as Linux being the best, that completely depends on ones frame of reference. If you're talking about 'hardware compatibility' then yes, if that the only thing an operating system has to deal with.
But the major downside is that there is no software even close to what the average person needs to work in the real world.
i did this exact same test on my dell studio 17 and ubuntu 9.10 was a lot slower .. boot time was slower and it took longer to load up anything.. seriously.
Why do people rave about linux lol i atleast thought it would have been quicker
Try it again with a normal boot, hence not first time from blue screen. It always takes longer the first time after that happens.
And how many 'open at startup' programs do you have running? My God man! Disable all that bullshit and it would be a lot better. Granted it still would be a few sec slower, but not 2:30. damn.
My boot w/ Win7 into Firefox w/ 3 homepages is @ 1:19 + Adobe Suite @ 1:28. Shut down w/ everything @ 14 sec.
try installing a virus program with a smaller resorche foot print like bitdefender total security 2010 thats whaty i use or if ur on a budget get avast its free also if norton has expired u should uninstall it no sense to leave it taking up hdd space
Hmm, I'm pretty sure that I disable unnecessary startup programs aside from Norton...
Anyway the norton in my netbook is a pre-install trail version and now the trail is over... Looks like the fastest way to get online safely (not 100% safe though) is avoid using Windows...
hmm, probably because of the Anti-Virus? (well, you need anti-virus if you want to go online safer with Windows) There're 57 processes (included the anti-virus) after I start the windows.
But Ubuntu do not have BSOD :D
Windows Sucks.

@EddieLolz3r It's not as noise as some high-end laptop and produce less heat than a MacBook pro... But this netbook isn't for multimedia business.

That's unusual for Windows 7 to take that long to launch firefox.
You might have excess startup software going in the tray, some of which you could disable with autoruns or even msconfig itself.
