Joanna took it very hard, and turned to the bottle. leaving Tatum and her brother (who was later killed in a boating accident) to be cared for by housekeepers. She wound up drinking herself to death at the age of 60.

(at least it meant she didn't wind up in that dumb-ass reality show with her ex and her kid).

I just learned some interesting (and sad) things about Joanna Moore, the actress in this scene (she was Peggy the county nurse, and Andy's romantic interest). Around the time this show was made, she married struggling actor Ryan O'Neal, who happened to be 10 years younger than her. And I know what you are thinking...she is Tatum's mother. However, after PEYTON PLACE made Ryan a star, he began playing around and finally left her for fellow PPer Leigh Taylor-Young. (see part 2)
