Love this part can you see faith Or God, hear it touch it smell it. Nope!! Fredric said it perfectly , thank God for such brilliance in creating perfect dialogue, which makes it clear. Love love this movie.
I'm not trying to troll, but the intellectual dishonesty of these lines upsets me (in spite of the fine acting). The first world war was enabled by nationalism: men believing and thinking with their emotions instead of their heads. Religion shares those characteristics. And you can certainly observe all the physical phenomena behind a toothache, right down to the signal in the nerves.
Thank you for posting all the same, I think March was fantastic!
@Hayes775199 ....Thnx for your comment; it's good for the soul (emotionally speaking of course.) Don't be "UPSET"--You're letting your emotions show.
The best to you and I'm not trying to be condescending at all; just having fun.

I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.
@Hayes775199 --Hmmmmmm--okay.;-) You're a funny, and very intelligent girl; I sincerely wish you the best. Excuse me please if I DO become emotional for a second and wish you Godspeed. As I've grown older, I seem more emotional here lately....;-(
What a great actor - one of the few truly interesting personalities in the movies - esp. when younger like this & earlier. When he got older I think he seemed more 'dark' and with an angry edge - off-putting, probably. His fame though will last, even if it's never white-hot.
A thought provoking clip. It is true that there are senses that go beyond what you can see/hear/touch/smell/taste. People who fail to acknowledge this are missing out on probably the most important dimension to *being* a human. However, sadly, religion often, consciously or unconsciously, discourages people from trying to fulfill their "spiritual need."
this was my mom's favorite movie. Her dad was a methodist minister in the 1920's. She told me that her life growing up was SO similar to this movie. Even the part about waiting for a couple to get married so they could have some money. This movie is exactly what it must have been like. Thanks for the memories...
i love this scene and the preachers speech. i say GO FOR GOLD. LOL when he says "i wouldn't blaspheme if i were you...its not too good for the soul" hehehe. i love it and absolutely love fredric march in all his roles.
Being a Christian, you can relate to this clip; if one is not a Christian, then they just don't GET it. Thanks for your comment; the best to you in your years ahead.
Thanks both of you for stopping by; I think he was a great talent too; Norma Shearer would have made this movie even greater. I think truly the part was not big enough for her in this move though. F.M. said in an interview many years ago that Norma was his favorite actress - he had very good taste.

@Hayes775199 Reminds me of the person who says,"I don't mean to interrupt.....", and then does interrupt.

March was indeed a brilliant actor. I think Martha Scott was also an excellent actress who was underused.

Interestingly enough Marlon Brando, of all people, named Fredric March as his favourite actor. He had good taste too!

Agreed. Fredric March is incomparably brilliant.
