In Canada this debate has been going on for decades and nothing seems to get resolved. As an anglophone who likes french and cultural diversity, I would like to see Quebec remain in Canada, and keep their "distinct nation" status. There have been many compromises towards Quebec with the goal of allowing french language and Quebecois culture to thrive. It is difficult for an anglophone to see what Quebec would gain from separation.

Ok, I care about the arts and I am upset at cuts to art & culture, but is this video about supporting the arts, or is it an excuse to mock anglophones? I think that the language issue is coming up simply because language issues are that much more important in the context of culture issues. This sketch doesn't make it obvious, but then, humour rarely works as much when it's trying to be too obvious.

Now let's look at this one, out of 5 provinces receiving equalization, Québec receives the least per capita, which puts the province in the middle of the pack. Being the largest province (by far) to receive equalization, it takes a large pie of the global pie, but it is still much less by capita.

Québec already invests more in culture than its counterparts, which is roughly 1% of the provincial budget.

In 2008 Quebec tax payers contributed for 20% of all taxes collected in Canada (about 32 billions NET after removing the transfers) wich means you probably would get a tax increase in Canada shortly after... Unless you cut in the military budgets, close some ambassies, ect.... Ontario receives 60% of all transfers in research... and they only contribute 39% of the taxes... As for the unemployement rate in Québec, it is near the lowest it has ever been, which should probably change soon thanks to the economy crisis we will (like the rest of the world) go through.
Right now however, Québec hasn'y officially hit recession, while the same cannot be said about Ontario. Expect Ontario to catch up and even get a bigger rate soon enough. They already were announced to receive equalization.
That said, Québec is not first in unemployement still. If you still count Québec as "one of 10 provinces", it is right there in the middle of the pack. It has a much lower % of unemployement than what we see in the Maritimes, for example. With this, come similar figures for people on welfare.

I'm at a stage in life where I get to push my teenagers to strongly consider Montreal as a destination (en anglais ou francais) for post-secondary studies. In Canada this debate has been going on for decades and nothing seems to get resolved. As an anglophone who likes french and cultural diversity, I would like to see Quebec remain in Canada, and keep their "distinct nation" status. There have been many compromises towards Quebec with the goal of allowing french language and Quebecois culture to thrive. It is difficult for an anglophone to see what Quebec would gain from separation.

Maintenant que ce sujet est clos, je tiens à dire que L'IDÉAL, sachant bien que c'est impossible, serait d'y aller selon la demande, mais encore là nous trouverions quelque chose à contredire. As much as we'd like to think that things are fine. It is getting harder and harder to prevent their society from being absorbed and lost forever.

Québec receives about 27.9% of all federal transfers to the provinces, a number that INCLUDES but isn't ONLY equalization. Québec contributes to about 24% of all transfer payments, which means the difference is simply about 2 billions.

Now let's look at this one, out of 5 provinces receiving equalization, Québec receives the least per capita, which puts the province in the middle of the pack. Being the largest province (by far) to receive equalization, it takes a large pie of the global pie, but it is still much less by capita.

Détruit le système de santé? Les départs massifs à la retraite étaient une erreur mais tout ceux qui en ont profité seraient aujourd'hui à la retraite de toute façon. Les impacts de cette décision ne se font plus sentir aujourd'hui.
Jean Charest, avec plusieurs années de mandant ayant la santé comme préoccupation principale, n'a jamais réussis à redresser la situation.

Les garderies sont un système efficace qui est en grande partie responsable du pouvoir d'achat maintenant plus élevé que l'Ontario des familles Québécoises.
Les CPE ont sorti massivement les mères monoparentales de l'assistance sociale alors qu'auparavant, elles n'avaient pratiquement aucun incitatif à aller travailler.
Jean Charest maintenant appuie le programme, car il est a de la valeur.

Il est effectivement aller chercher ces emails dans sa voiture, en état d'ébriété, ainsi que des effets personnels pour rentrer a pied mais il n'a jamais été prouvé qu'il allait conduire.
Sa version est que la voiture n'était pas en marche.
Aucune accusation n'a été portée.
Il est permis de douter la véracité de ces dires mais non d'affirmer sans doute qu'il allait effectivement conduire.

Ce qui est étrange, c'est justement que les médias ont eu vent de cette affaire, alors que la SQ n'a jamais divulgué l'identité de M. Blanchet. On soupçonne qu'un adversaire a fourni l'information aux médias.

The separatists are racial, which is fact. As for the votes, in a few years it will be the immigrants tnat will control the destiny of Quebec at the polls given recent birth rates in the province. The English understand/speak French as well as Pauline Marois understands/speaks English.

Je suis souverainiste et comme la plupart d'entres eux, ne me considère pas 'raciste' (I assume this is what you meant by 'racial').
Les 'immigrants' seront des Québécois. L'idée étant de les intégrer à notre société et d'en faire de fiers citoyens.
Le taux de naissances est à la hausse grâce à de nouvelles politiques familiales mais effectivement, il reste du chemin à faire.

Hérouxville is not representative of the province: anyone with half a brain living here knows that.Separatists are not racist anyone who lived here long enough can see that. Came from europe and spent 22 years in Canada(2 in Ontario)and learned both languages. Protecting french in Québec is clearly a necessity. I Found much more hatred in ontario about french speaking than here in Québec about english speaking. I was Looked upon in Ontario by a visible minority for speaking french:that sucks.

La langue en est effectivement probablement l'effet déclencheur. Québec souscrit généralement à une idéologie sociale qui se rapproche plus des pays d'europe que du reste de l'Amérique du Nord. Qu'on parle d'écologie, de culture, de présence militaire à l'étranger.

Québec se soucit de ses talents locaux, ayant sa culture propre. La culture Canadienne n'est qu'un appendice nordique de celle des États-Unis. Quelques saveurs locales mais en gros du pareil au même.
New-York est beaucoup plus similaire à Toronto qu'elle ne l'est de Dallas par exemple.

Un exemple qui démontre bien la différence est le prix de la Bobine d'Or (plus d'entrées en salles pour un long métrage) remis aux Juno Awards.
Presque chaque année, un film Québécois l'emporte, alors que celui-ci n'est habituellement qu'à l'affiche dans UNE province sur 10. En contraste, les films Canadiens sont sans saveur pour ces même Canadiens, la raison étant la compétition Américaine qui cible le même marché culturel.

Great for her, I also fully support exporting our talents whenever we can in the States, France or elsewhere and we sure have many of manage to.
That said, it is still possible for many of the "others" to make a career locally, while the same really can't be said in the ROC.

As for the unemployement rate in Québec, it is near the lowest it has ever been, which should probably change soon thanks to the economy crisis we will (like the rest of the world) go through.
Right now however, Québec hasn'y officially hit recession, while the same cannot be said about Ontario. Expect Ontario to catch up and even get a bigger rate soon enough. They already were announced to receive equalization.

That said, Québec is not first in unemployement still. If you still count Québec as "one of 10 provinces", it is right there in the middle of the pack. It has a much lower % of unemployement than what we see in the Maritimes, for example. With this, come similar figures for people on welfare.
But looking at numbers without reshaping them however I see fit makes me a "sad individual" right?

As a western I am embarrassed by the moronic comments by many anglos who havent even been to Quebec. This province has a unique and dynamic culture and if some of the opinons expressed by morons were the the majority view of English Canadians I wouldnt blame them if they went on their own.

wcaithness, I'm a westerner too and I so totally agree with you! It is such a benefit and a joy to have Quebec (et tous les canadien(ne)s francais(e)) in Canada. I'm at a stage in life where I get to push my teenagers to strongly consider Montreal as a destination (en anglais ou francais) for post-secondary studies. It was certainly one of the best things I ever did in my life!
