  • This movie had some really great moments, unfortunately they're followed up by some really bad acting and dull scenes. I thought the guy they picked to play Superman was terrific, looks just like Christopher Reeves however the rest of the cast sucks. The script was horrible as well, the running time of 2 and half hours was way to long, they could have cut the last 30 minutes (kid part) out entirely.

  • @kpernod30

Or just reboot the damn thing. :P I'm looking forward to The Man of Steel very much. I think it will allow us to forget about this sad attempt at trying to resurrect Superman. And I agree wholeheartedly about the kid. I mean, a dull, asthmatic super-murderer? Lois Lane obviously wasn't teaching her son much about how to disarm criminals rather than just smashing them with pianos. :P I have no idea what the hell Bryan Singer was thinking with this movie.

  • The moment they decided to have this movie pick up from the Christopher Reeve films---in some bizarre, convoluted way I still haven't figured out---they doomed it.

As for Kevin Spacey, watching his Gene-Hackman-as-Lex-Luthor impression, and that's precisely what it was,was just sad.

  • @snarkus63

Yes, and I guess they were also expecting us to accept the proposed 5 year absence from one movie dated in the 1980s to another set in the mid-2000s. The technological progression in Metropolis must have been astounding during that time. :P Here's to the upcoming Man of Steel movie. Let's hope it rocks.

  • Didn't like this film at all. As Roger says, Clark/Superman has so little dialogue its hard to connect with him, he spends more time worrying about Lois than he does about doing his Man of Steel duties, Frank Langella is much too reserved as Perry White, and Kate totally misses the mark as Lois. The plane rescue was well done, but any action it tried to give us was just dull.

Don't even get me started on the kid. Ugh.

  • @ImmortalfireTheMod

Yes, that kid. Singer should have known better. Sons of Superman belong in Elseworlds titles, not in the movies. They didn't even give him a child in the Smallville series, and that wasn't the best written Superman story of them all. Thankfully, we won't have to worry about this crap in the new movie.

  • i thought it was pretty good. above average for me.

  • I tried to like this movie. And... I failed.

It is a shame that Bryan Singer dropped out of X-Men 3 to do this.

  • this was the most boring and one of the worst movie of all time

  • I thought it was good but a little preachy...and Kevin Spacey's direction on being Lex Luthor doesn't match what I appreciate for the character...sigh.

  • I agree with Ebert. This is a terrible movie.

  • @qwuezalothus Terrible? Don't you think that's a bit harsh?

  • @rosario508

Sadly, I don't. Too many things were messed up in it: Clark was a selfish jerk, Lois Lane was a bit hollow, Supermans powers were overdone (eyeball catches bullet), the story was lame and had enormous number of holes in it. From the hole atmospheare you could feel that this is only a copy of Donner's Superman-dilogy. A loveletter from a dimwit director, who ruined two comic-book-movie franchises at same time.

  • @qwuezalothus

One more thing: Cyclops had to killed in X-men 3. early, so the actor could come to Supermaín Returns and play a totally colorless anticharacter in Returns. He left because Bryan Singer offered this chance to him.

  • @qwuezalothus

More like Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane was a whiny, miserable bitch. All she did most of the time was complain about or condescend Superman. There were too many things wrong with this movie to cover in just one five minute review. Superman Returns had points it could have capitalized on, but instead squandered them. The new movie will give us what we want. I have faith Amy Adams will make a much more likable, and as Ebert and Roeper said, plucky Lois Lane, just like she should be.

  • Will Amy Adams be a better Lois Lane?I know that she could definitely be better compared to Kate Bosworth due to better acting skills BUT can she be better than Margot Kidder?I hope she does

  • Kate Bosworth definitely misfired as Lois Lane.No question about it.

  • the problem with someone like ebert is that hes still stuck on the reeves superman. just his comments alone: "When new york gets flooded..." New york was the setting for the original metropolis, not this movie.

  • The problem with Superman Returns is that it was really just Superman III (as if the original 3rd and 4th never happened) and done as if it was still 1983. Sorry, but the world has changed A LOT even in the last twenty-some years. Add in how Christopher Reeve had recently died and its direct copying of the older movies' style came off as maudlin, even macabre. Should have been done as a modern movie, not (in effect) an eighties movie kept on the shelf for decades before being shown.

  • @Ranillon Superman Returns has a lot of references from Superman:The Movie,Superman II and Superman II:The Richard Donner Cut.It wasn't a reboot of sorts. That is why the critics cannot avoid the comparison. It was a good thing that Man Of Steel is a complete reboot.

  • I never understood why they had that spaceshuttle ontop of the airplane...

  • @xaxie1 30 years ago it would make sense but not in the present.

  • Ebert..Ebert...Ebert.

  • 4:33 O SHIT HES HAVING A SEIZURE

  • "just too darn wholesome to be interesting"

Watch Captain America and tell me a movie about an incredibly wholesome, virtuous, good-guy super hero can't be interesting.

  • My Theory (and pls pls, spare me, ONLY reply to this and dignify this with a response if you are a TRUE comicbook/superhero fan and more specifically if not asking too much a DC FAN ie: Batman AND Supes ) NOW; is it possible that S.R suffers from the same 'probs' as Batman Begins. Slow moving story, not enough 'time in the suit/as the alter ego, under used undeveloped villains, the city Metropoliz/Gotham as well as 2ndary characters get more screen time than the title character? & BB got a pass?

  • This is like a bizarro version of the original Superman, but it's of the worst kind: it's bland. it features a tight mouthed superman who's supposed to be a confident and intelligent demigod, a Clark that is less whimsical compared to original who had a screwball comedy charm and awkwardness; a bland, mild mannered Lois as opposed to the tough, smart mouthed, career woman. Lex for me is another story. Spacey was obviously on autopilot here except for his bald head. PS noticed Koeper bit pissed?

  • There are so many villians they could have tapped what about Brainiac or well anyone but Lex Luther who is so stupid in this one. Thumbs down go get the first one with Reeve its the same thing!

  • This movie was so dissapointing when I saw it. It was a huge waste of time!

  • My favourite thing about Lois and Clark is that it made it abundantly clear that Clark is who Kal-El is and Superman is what he can do. Every movie has always made it so Clark is a bit of a bumbling fool who has to put on the tights to become the man he truly is. That's not the case.

  • I really wanted to like this movie, but the characters that were so interesting in the original movie are just so vapid here. Am I the only one that thought that Parker Posey would've made a better Lois Lane than Bosworth?

  • @ralphyetmore Nope - you're not the only one! But then I thought my obese cat would make a better Lois than Bosworth. I'm looking forward to seeing Amy Adams in the role.

  • @ralphyetmore Nope - you're not the only one! But then I thought my obese cat would make a better Lois than Bosworth. I'm looking forward to seeing Amy Adams in the role.

  • Ugh, this movie was almost as bad as Spider-Man 3

  • @BenderUnit22x

you are aware that this was release a YEAR before Spiderman 3 right?

  • @coopercastille I'm not sure how this is relevant.

  • @BenderUnit22x Almost, don't get me wrong they're both pretty bad but at least Superman didn't dance.

  • i don't know but i loved the movie.. people go in expecting darkside or something battle but this movie is more of a return for all those superman fan from the 1 2 3 and 4. and to relive the moment they did a good job.. now if the nexts superman comes out and same o same o.. then thats its for me...

  • 3:20 Maybe it's something called subtlety, Ebert.

  • Ebert to Roeper: WRONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!

  • I wonder why they didn't just reboot the franchise.

Movie was okay.. I agree with Roeper's mild thumbs up.

  • @starlinej they are. 2013, "The man of Steel" Directed by Zack Snyder

  • I thought this movie had all the same problems as Ang Lee's 'Hulk'. It just flat out sucked. Glad I didn't pay to see it.

  • I think the recent Captain America movie shows that the super-hero being too 'darn wholesome' need not be a problem, and need not restrict the film from being dramatic or the hero being compelling.

  • AH! Now I have to see them review Monster House. I love that movie!!

  • Superman can be done right in any era - but a character who is basically unstoppable bar kryptonite needs a more powerful opponent. I like Lex Luthor - but he is the enemy in nearly ever film and tv show. Bring in supermans other villains - expand them - in doing so expands story and characters. Darkseid is perfect! I heard in Man of Steel Zod is in it - so step in right direction - except Zod has already been done!

  • Probably one of my favorite movies. I thought it was beautiful and really faithful to the previous Superman movies and the characters in general.

  • As a fan of the first 2 movies, I tried really hard to like this one but it really fell short. I thought the cgi was awful, the characters were flat, the plot was so by the numbers and anti-climactic it was unbeleivable. What happened here?

  • I liked everything about this film besides the same boring Lex finds kryptonite and almost kills Superman plot. Without villains as strong or stronger than Superman, the movie will never work.

  • PS- It figures, so called "i have a life" is the cartoon idiot again

  • Ugly Ebert has been given thumbs down by the world

  • @TheBitchinbabs Wow. He has jaw cancer dumb-ass.

  • @SonicThunderBYG Wow, you are as ugly and outdated as she (Ebert) is.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBitchinbabs You're a cunt to make fun of someone's disease which could kill him based on his opinions on movie. That's first rate trolling.

  • @Ihavealife100 Your name should be "I don't have a life" as you are a fool who needs an ugly nerds opinion of old movies to direct you. Lets face it, Ebert's latest publicity stunt (to kick the dead) backfired and is laughable considering he was an alcoholic him/her/itself for years. Also failed at movie screen play writings, producing smut. Now your idol is deformed missing his jaw. Can't eat or drink or speak and is about ready for the grave. You can still suck his dick before it is amputed

  • @TheBitchinbabs I disagree with Ebert alot of times but making fun of his disease is just being a giant cunt.

  • this movie sucked

  • I agree with Ebert mostly except for Spacey. Why is the original always better? I think Spacey is on the same level as Hackman was. That was the best casting move they made in making Spacey Lex Luthor. Routh isn't a great actor but I don't think he's terrible either. But Routh lost out to Tom Welling while auditioning for Smallville. If Routh wasn't good enough for Smallville, how can he make a great superman? And they really struck out on Lois.

  • I LOVED this movie not one of the greatest Superman movies but it's leaps & bounds better than Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Supergirl, and the mid 70's Superman Late Night Special.

  • This movie should have been called Superman 5. Being a fan of the earlier Christopher Reeves movies I have to say this movie was a little disappointing and it took me a year of being in denial about this movie to realize how much better and epic this movie could have been. The biggest mistake was having superman return, meaning he already exist and people already know him instead of making a superman from scratch and retelling the whole story in a 21st century way about him coming from krypton.

  • Roger was right to give it a thumbs down 'cause the suit's colors are ugly, and Superman left Earth to find Krypton remains? That's is 'so' dumb.

  • they're both quite right. i even side with roeper. the movie is very dull however there's some opportunity for some eye-popping sequences. these are things you can't see batman doing. it's awesome. as a movie, not great, i want a superman movie not a new sequel to the ancient richard donner movies. but . . . for what it is, it's a damn good sequel to those flicks.

  • This has to be one of the last episodes before Ebert left

  • @Drac39 It is.

  • I actually liked the movie, but like Roeper said, it was too long and dragged in some areas. Kate Bosworth was a terrible Lois Lane, Routh was a better Clark than Superman, and Kevin Spacy was an edgier Lex than they give him credit for.

  • they fucked up on this movie but its still fun to say

  • thanks

  • This was alright. Not bad not great. A reboot was in order.
