People enjoy asking me what kind of music I like. I want to say 80's music but the people who asks those questions don't really know who The Birthday Party was/is.

I usually just answer with 'that's a tough question.'

Maybe a slightly better answer might be something like "post-punk" or "very early indie"? Definitely don't say "80's music" because they'll assume you mean hair pop bands like Duran Duran or Culture Club, or hair metal bands like Poison.

The problem with answering with indie is alot of times people make their own assumptions based off of what they perceive to be indie. It's almost as bad as saying 80's music.

Tell them the bands you listen to. I always do that now, genres don`t really tell so much because as you said, everybody perceives other things to be this or that. I always earn rolling eyes when i show someone what "The Birthday Party" was and nobody believes that THIS guy is nick cave. Its a bit sad.
