Microsoft Business model is licensing, the question with such prices... can they survive in a world where tablets, media centers, laptops, netbooks, telephones... can do things most people want.
i have windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bits in my desktop.. i only paid $38 (bought it from college) and i have ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook for free... i think that an OS sholuld be priced around 40-50 bucks.
I found windows 7 professional 64 bit on newegg for 119.99 USD. If they still have that price when I buy my new gaming PC's parts, I will most definitely get that,
Fuck Windows. I paid a fortune for that damn windows 7, and when I turned on my computer one day it said that I had an illegal version and shit like that.
Linux is the best OS and if it only had more software companies to support it it would blow windows out of the water.I hate that microsoft's prices are so high do they think people have 1500 $ /month salaries?
i have looked at alternate and it was 89 for a oem not for a retail and the prices in ths move are in canadese dollars i only know than 1.5 american $ =1€ so you need to re calculate the price to dollars
Windows 7 has worked very well. While it is way too expensive and came right after the pitiful vista failure it has been superb for me. I upgraded from XP due to many bugs I get in in that particular setup. After installing 7, the problems have been completely alleviated. It is also faster than XP in almost every case. Plus you could get it much cheaper elsewhere or *cough* pirate it.
I hear that the upgrade and the full version are the same and that the upgrade one also have the full version so don't even bother getting the full one.
I do admit that Windows 7 is unfairly priced (all versions) since some people who buy it preinstalled on their machines are obviously getting it much cheaper overall
but you do get more than just the operating system, you still get Windows Media Player, MSN and they'll keep updating your operating system and all its software for free, no catch
the only extras Microsoft make you pay for are the MS Office apps
computers that come with windows 7 have a more special non-oem license. a lot of what makes it cheaper is how many times the key code can be used and the amount of crap that comes with the computer
Windows 7 pisses me off so much. The stink of Vista hasn't even cleared the room yet and they shove Windows 7 on us? Windows 7 is basically a "fixed" vista. The fair thing to do would be to offer Vista users an extremely discounted upgrade (I'm talking like $29.99).
Microsoft is so far gone from what it used to be (circa Windows 95), it actually makes me feel a bit ashamed that I use their software.
They're shoving 7 in our faces because they know how much Vista sucked. Windows 7 is much more than a fixed Vista. To think that they came out with this so soon tells you to be pissed off?
student version is just like the "basic" version, which is only a little better than the "netbook" version.
windows is way to overpriced, and you don't really gain much.
XP for the win. I still have my key and still enjoy my XP. Everything runs, fast, multi-tasked, sure I don't have 64 support, but what does a gamer need 64 bit for, it does NOTHING for you unless the game is made FOR 64, which NONE are.
Windows is indeed overpriced, and the student version is not "like the basic version." You are in fact able to choose between a windows basic 32 bit or 64 bit, and there is an option to choose windows professional 32 bit or 64bit copy.
It is not like the basic version, and there is a performance gain if you intend to use 6 gigs of ram as opposed to 3 when you upgrade from a 32 bit to a 64 bit which was the reason I bought windows 7 64 bit.
Plus I was running vista at the time, so you know...
Just because you have 6 gigs means its faster than 4 gigs, it just means more programs can run at one time without slowing down.
think of it as each gig is a empty cup. You play a game that takes up 1 gig, you fill one cup.
if all you have is one cup (1 gig) then the memory has to dump off previous info to bring in new, causing lag with the computer, because programs cease while this happens.
If I have 4 gig DDR3 and you have 8gig ddr3, we are same speed, just you can do more at one time.
I would have explained that, but 500 words is not enough to do that unfortunately, however, like I said if you'd like to upgrade for a reasonable price 29.99 for the student copy is a good buy.
Just realized something interesting. It's easier and actually very comfortable to listen to you when you talk fast, rather than pausing between words. :) Interesting review, I thought you were going to leave it at "you tell me". XD Microsoft product are so expensive <.<;
Windows is overpriced, period. Micro$haft is freaking nuts in their pricing scheme. Fortunately I'm still using XP on my current machine, my new one comes with Vista, and can be upgraded to 7 for free.
what do you expect? Microsoft, like every other big company, will do whatever it takes to squeeze more money from their customers, even if they have to use gimmicks and slap on ridiculous price tags
I have been using Windows 7 RC for a while now. I had the chance to try the beta, but my computer was having technical issues at the time.
Apart from the price tag on these things, Windows 7 is an excellent OS. I don't think you could pay me to go back to XP ever again.
Most people aren't going to need more than the Home Premium edition of Windows 7 (Unless you somehow need more than 16GB of RAM. I don't think anyone would ever need more than that anyways.)
they should stop using there loyal users and give away copyes to everyone that ever bought vista if someonehas vista ultimate X64 they should get 7 ultimate X64 for free and lower there prices to around 70$ for a retail copy of home premium
I think home premium is prob best value for home users as you get most of the new win 7 stuff as your probably not going to need the win xp mode, bitlocker and home network backup found in the other two.
Though having buy ultimate for bit locker and 35 languges seems a bit of a piss take. Wonder how long it will take people to hack bitlocker.
In the UK, I got Windows 7 Ultimate for just £150 (on £10 more than Professional). But then realised if I had waited a year until I was at University I could have had it for just £60. Ahh the disadvantage of taking a gap year lol.
So current is windows 7 and now they are planing for windows 8 in 5 years time ?
Also everyone says windows vista sucks big time.. so there for who are the makers of windows vista and are they the same team who created windows 7 or is windows vista company are bankrupt? because no one like them.... i wonder.
People complain too much. You're paying ~$300 for an operating system license that you will use for how long? 3-5 years? Maybe longer? Do the math:
Paying $1.16 every week for something that you will basically use for multiple hours of every day of the next 4 years. You don't want to pay for a $300 operating system but you'll run to the store without thinking and buy that new $60 xbox game.
While I agree with your message I don't agree with your logic. If we used your methods to justify prices companies could charge 300 dollars for a video game and you could use the justification of "Well I could use this every day and get my money out of it."
All OSes have been overpriced like this since, well, computers have been going. They will most likely always be this expensive so people will have to just learn to cope. Plus you're getting the best MS OS in years (IMO).
I agree with Reviva. I agree with your message, although i would recommend an oem copy to lower the price. By your logic everything that is used over the long term could be charged ridiculously high. When building a computer, one would now have to allocate 300$ or so for the OS instead of better hardware.
windows 7 pirating will be extreme. Windows 7 will become the most pirated OS of all time. Microsoft would have made more money if they would charge a fair price and only one version. Microsoft 7 full 100.00 bucks everything in one version. I can guarantee they would sell 75% more then usual . Sometimes I wonder Vista was created for negative impact sales.
i got my home premium full version on release date for $155 with tax canadian. even that was over priced. some places here have it for $139 with tax. best buy is dumb. i got mine from a local computer store.
i was working in an computer company in Iran , as you know iran is software heaven :D no copyright ... anyway i just want to tell you every day we install over 2,000,000$ Operating systems and softwares for free :D but here i have to buy everything thats sucks :D
...I have no problems playing wow or any other game with "Wine" ...but if spending lots of money on a sludge interface, to play games is your thing.. then go right ahead...I was only making the point that Ubuntu is FREE and is a good option.... compared to window 7 home premium at 230$.
PC over MAC....Not here to discuss that though,Windows 7 Ultimate is extremely overpriced.if Microsoft wants to be douche bags then I'm just going to download this torrent off of "Mininova".I mean 300$ for an OS alone? Come on Microsoft get with the times, people aren't as wealthy as they were before,"Its teh recession" we want to save!
ACTUALLY there is much more support for XP then windows 7. It's your opinion that it is outdated, It's an OS, the only difference i can see is a more user friendly GUI and minor other upgrades. Where has anyone cut XP support? (it's a rhetorical question)
You said OUTDATED not OLD, there is a difference. It's not like it's a game where the graphics become outdated with time, it's an OS which allows me to navigate and run programs. Anyway XP is fine if you feel the need to get win7 it's your choice. There is no proof that it will become unsupported any time soon(which you claim).
hehehe RODNEY IM ALLREADY FALLEN IN LOVE WITH YOU MATE. YOUR FUNNY SOMETIMES ;) SO CUTE LOL. I tell you what comes after windows vista ? WINDOWS 7 YAY..... what after windows 7 ? windows universal or windopws quantam premium
i'd still rather go torent r warez then buy it, yea im a scum bag but hey, saves me money and i get what u get by paying $400, for free n no shit happens... Over pricees assholes
I got my full version of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, for $30 US. I just called the Microsoft store up and had a student email address and we got it all done over the phone. I think that offer lasts until like January or so.
Meh, cant belive people actually waste money on buying software like windows, photoshop, sony vegas etc... torrenting has become so easy and unrestricted, and saves soo much money...
no one goes to jain man, how many millions of movies n soft nd games being downloaded everyday? 3 kinds of public.. Rich Public who can buy it and dont give a fuck, smart public who will rather torrent it, and save money, and the dim public like u who waste money and buy it while being afraid of the FBI getting u over the internet and screen, sukka
I got Windows 7 - Ultimate x64 totally free of charge through my tafe. All i had to do was download the .ISO from the MSDNA website and then burn it to a disk.
Alot of people clearly in the case of Os's otherwise millions and years of investment would not be made in them. any other software though i have to agree.
All of them are too pricey, and win 7 ultimate for almost 400 bucks lol, please. Win 7 home should be 59 dollars, win 7 pro should be 79 dollars, win 7 ultimate should be 115 dollars.
do you know how many years of effort and technology they put into windows 7? Of course not you have a piece of shit emachine, also those are CANADIAN prices. AND THEY ARE RETAIL. NOBODY BUYS RETAIL WINDOWS THEY GET OEM WHICH IS WAY CHEAPER. build your own rig and then we'll talk
Yea but the prices are a bit high and well not that much cheaper compared to US prices at best buy. So let me rethink, win 7 home should be 79 dollars, windows pro should be 115 , and windows ultimate 150. There isn't that much difference from win pro and home and ultimate, seriously. Even with XP, xp pro, no difference. I am using home edition sp2 xp now and well no differnce from pro.
Anyways, building rigs is not my thing, i buy from best buy, prebuilt is the way to go
the prices are crazy. period. at best on the upgrades, it should be 69 99 and 129. on the fulls, 99 149 and 199 respectively.
now to the comment about prebuilt.
i'll say this
my computer WAS BUILT, NOT BOUGHT.
now i dont wanna say buying a computer is bad or anything, but honestly, you'll never be able to take care of your own computer properly untill you build your first rig. you just.. wont care QUITE as much.. trust me.. theres nothing like building pcs
I just dont like building thats all, not my cup of tea. I have a single core by emachine, but is buying a emachine dual core, and later as my secondary rig buying a quad core. all from bestbuy.
Building, i dont feel like ordering parts thats all. i do know how to remove everything and put everything back together tho, i did that with my old p3, and know how to do it with my emachince right now, but i just like things simple, and quick = best buy.
I won't even buy that OS but when I purchased a new laptop I'll probably get charged for it :( Still cheaper than getting the copy from retail store alone.
geez its not that bad its $110 (US!!!) for the OEM version... yeah its a little pricey but you have to realize that its takes a LOT of work to code something as big as an OS and debug it... i will definately shell out the money for 7 for my next build.
Where I live you can order Windows 7 Home Premium full version online for just under £100 at PC World. but yea the other versions aren't exactly a great bargin, just get the one that bests suits your needs, im going for Pro
this is what i think, i ran on torrented XP copies for a while. WHen windows 7 came around, there was a preorder available to buy it for 50$. I gave it some thought, and i decided to buy it. If they sold it for 50$ pro for 100, and ultimate for 150, then they would be reasonable. But microsoft doesnt know anything/ they have a fucking monopoly on OSes
I agree Rodney - coupled with the fact that Windows7 is really only Vista with the bugs worked out of it I feel very angry at Microsoft. They are hosing those who don't know, and bending those of us that do over the barrel.
I'm particularly upset as I've always defended MS against the flagrant misleading hype of Apple. But in this case the greedy b@st@rds have gone too far.
the family pack of snow leopard cost me fifty bucks. and the cheapest version of W7 costs more than twice that. When I buy W7, I'm gonna be going with an OEM 64 bit ultimate version. shaves about 150 bucks off the price. it's still very exorbitant, but it makes paying for the ultimate version a little easier to handle, considering I didn't wanna pay more for my operating system than I do for my graphics card =P
but the thing is a mac is at least 1000 bucks unlike windows computers which you could find with the same components dirt cheep but it is true the software alone is overpriced
It is VERY over priced, a firend is getting me an OEM for $10 he works at best buy, but im a Mac/PC user and why does my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard only cost $29 ?
No wonder Macintosh are doing very well, cause they understand prices...on Operating systems that is!
they're differently priced in the UK, I do belive they are a little cheaper, this is very strange Microsoft bein American and all, anyways you could always steal the OS... hahahaha I'M ONLY JOKING seriously, I'm gonna probably upgrade to the Home Premium or Ultimate just after Christmas =/
Microshafts tactic is to make a new OS and make it shitty. Then make a replacement OS to fix the problems with the previous one and at the same time terminate support for the OS people used instead of the shitty one. In this case, people who bought Vista from the hype of having a completely new OS now have to buy Windows 7 since XP is no longer supported. I've never bought a copy of Windows, and I never will. Severely overpriced and often useless.
Microsoft Business model is licensing, the question with such prices... can they survive in a world where tablets, media centers, laptops, netbooks, telephones... can do things most people want.

...I have no problems playing wow or any other game with "Wine" ...but if spending lots of money on a sludge interface, to play games is your thing.. then go right ahead...I was only making the point that Ubuntu is FREE and is a good option.... compared to window 7 home premium at 230$.
nasdastrovia 2 years ago
where can I download Ubuntu from if its free? is it an open source file or something?
undeadshooter 2 years ago
@undeadshooter: If you have to ask, chances are you shouldn't be using it.
stevemaster1763 2 years ago
I dont really need Ubuntu, so it doesnt matter, anyway Windows has the best support for all the popular programs
undeadshooter 2 years ago
Who the fuck buys an retail OS? Buy it OEM or you're completely retarded.
I don't use the default shit windows interface, bblean / blackbox ftw.

Shut the fuck up, Macs are stupid and very overpriced.
And don't give me that MACS DON'T HAVE VIRUS!!!
Get the fuck out Macs do have viruses.
You have to be a complete fuck wad to get a virus on the pc.

that you can hack a mac quicker than windows 7

if you guys want cheaper prices, you guys might consider OEM versions.
GundamAngelicDevil 2 years ago
Why would anyone want this over XP?
theEH1 2 years ago
XP is outdated they are already cutting support for it.
XP support will end in late 2010.
Time to move on.
QuantumVTX 2 years ago
plus Windows 7 is less vulnarable to viruses and has better security, im gonna upgrade when i can
undeadshooter 2 years ago
ACTUALLY there is much more support for XP then windows 7. It's your opinion that it is outdated, It's an OS, the only difference i can see is a more user friendly GUI and minor other upgrades. Where has anyone cut XP support? (it's a rhetorical question)
theEH1 2 years ago
It is not an opinion, It is a fact it's more than 8 years old.
QuantumVTX 2 years ago
You said OUTDATED not OLD, there is a difference. It's not like it's a game where the graphics become outdated with time, it's an OS which allows me to navigate and run programs. Anyway XP is fine if you feel the need to get win7 it's your choice. There is no proof that it will become unsupported any time soon(which you claim).

i would prefer pirate

I got my full version of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, for $30 US. I just called the Microsoft store up and had a student email address and we got it all done over the phone. I think that offer lasts until like January or so.

Meh, cant belive people actually waste money on buying software like windows, photoshop, sony vegas etc... torrenting has become so easy and unrestricted, and saves soo much money...
launger 2 years ago
if everyone torrented, the companies who manufacture the software would be broke and there wouldnt be any software in the first place.

Alot of people clearly in the case of Os's otherwise millions and years of investment would not be made in them. any other software though i have to agree.

People who are too lazy/dumb to google something and then add the word "torrent" after it.

running windows 7 ultimate now, great os and price compared to vista.
mgza2007 2 years ago
All of them are too pricey, and win 7 ultimate for almost 400 bucks lol, please. Win 7 home should be 59 dollars, win 7 pro should be 79 dollars, win 7 ultimate should be 115 dollars.
eMachinePower 2 years ago 5
do you know how many years of effort and technology they put into windows 7? Of course not you have a piece of shit emachine, also those are CANADIAN prices. AND THEY ARE RETAIL. NOBODY BUYS RETAIL WINDOWS THEY GET OEM WHICH IS WAY CHEAPER. build your own rig and then we'll talk
soccaman847 2 years ago
Yea but the prices are a bit high and well not that much cheaper compared to US prices at best buy. So let me rethink, win 7 home should be 79 dollars, windows pro should be 115 , and windows ultimate 150. There isn't that much difference from win pro and home and ultimate, seriously. Even with XP, xp pro, no difference. I am using home edition sp2 xp now and well no differnce from pro.
Anyways, building rigs is not my thing, i buy from best buy, prebuilt is the way to go
eMachinePower 2 years ago
@machine power but at all in general:
the prices are crazy. period. at best on the upgrades, it should be 69 99 and 129. on the fulls, 99 149 and 199 respectively.
now to the comment about prebuilt.
i'll say this
my computer WAS BUILT, NOT BOUGHT.
now i dont wanna say buying a computer is bad or anything, but honestly, you'll never be able to take care of your own computer properly untill you build your first rig. you just.. wont care QUITE as much.. trust me.. theres nothing like building pcs
williamkendrick 2 years ago
Well put, i agree with those prices also. :)
I just dont like building thats all, not my cup of tea. I have a single core by emachine, but is buying a emachine dual core, and later as my secondary rig buying a quad core. all from bestbuy.
Building, i dont feel like ordering parts thats all. i do know how to remove everything and put everything back together tho, i did that with my old p3, and know how to do it with my emachince right now, but i just like things simple, and quick = best buy.
eMachinePower 2 years ago
i agree 100% its not that hard to build either, plus the time pays off with the amount of money you save for what your getting
xchlppprsx 2 years ago
I won't even buy that OS but when I purchased a new laptop I'll probably get charged for it :( Still cheaper than getting the copy from retail store alone.
GTRFireMan 2 years ago
students can get it for $30
Supralobe 2 years ago
geez its not that bad its $110 (US!!!) for the OEM version... yeah its a little pricey but you have to realize that its takes a LOT of work to code something as big as an OS and debug it... i will definately shell out the money for 7 for my next build.
AgentHydra 2 years ago

Thank God for Ubuntu!

the family pack of snow leopard cost me fifty bucks. and the cheapest version of W7 costs more than twice that.
InternetSandman 2 years ago
but the thing is a mac is at least 1000 bucks unlike windows computers which you could find with the same components dirt cheep but it is true the software alone is overpriced

I agree with Rodney, the prices for a well done version of Vista is ridiculously expensive.
Douken 2 years ago
they're differently priced in the UK, I do belive they are a little cheaper, this is very strange Microsoft bein American and all, anyways you could always steal the OS... hahahaha I'M ONLY JOKING seriously, I'm gonna probably upgrade to the Home Premium or Ultimate just after Christmas =/
Johny40Se7en 2 years ago
to me a bit expensive except for the upgrade version home premium.
Alex209Cali 2 years ago
what's the difference between full and upgrade?
TheMonolithicDonkey 2 years ago
Full means you can install it completely by itself.
Upgrade means you have to install it over an existing OS e.g. you have to have XP already running on your computer.
TiroDvD 2 years ago
You can't upgrade to Windows 7 in a system that has XP.

32 bit version of Windows 7 I'm sure you can.
