The stability of the tape transport's speed seemed pretty good when you were handling it. I have one very much like yours, only it has a digital tuner in the top cover.
I also have a slimline silver unit that did the "Xtreme Brain Shaker" thing, with a little "power unit" on the back of the earbuds. That one ran from one AA battery (and managed to play for ages anyway) and was barely thicker than a cassette case.
@uxwbill I still have the Panasonic, but I gave away the Durabrand. A lot of the equipment you see in these older videos has by now been given away, donated to charity, sold on eBay, or recycled. I only keep the "cream of the crop" in my collection.
@vwestlife I was thinking that maybe it got "dealt with" using a "Durahammer" or something...which even as low end as it is, I'd kinda hate to see happen. :-)
I'm trying to get caught up with all of your videos as I have time to do so.
haha!! dude, I just bought one of these from a rummage sale. I love it!! and yeah I know what your talking about with the bass boost. It was so powerful, that it blew out my JVC earbuds. XD
Now I have some larger JVC HA-RX500 headphones and a lithium battery in the player. Still runs great even though I got it for 10 cents. XDDD
I call that Family Radio guy "Mel Cooley", the guy from the Dick Van Dyke Show--he used to sound like him, though his voice has gelded with age since I heard him 20+ years ago....
Panasonic walkmans have very nice tape transport, and the pinch roller's pressure is especially strong, so the weaker tapes sound fairly balanced too. But i don't understand, why its set to lower tape speed originally, because i have RQ-V75 and V77, and they were playing slowly too. It was neccesary to take piece, and adjust. :)
Hey, do you know exactly how much these things sold for originally? I just saw one on eBay (along with a portable CD player), but it's at a Buy it Now price for $65. I've never had a Panasonic walkman, but I would assume they're pretty good. I just recently bought a Sony walkman from 1987 on eBay, but the tape player seems like it's dead. It just ate one of my tapes.
I'm not sure about this particular model, but I pulled out a J&R catalog from 2001 (a few years newer) and prices for Panasonic's cassette walkmans ranged from $49.99 for a basic model similar to the one I have, up to $89.99 for one with digital tuning, full-logic tape controls, and the "VMSS Brain Shaker" bass-vibrating headphones that I mentioned in the video.
I still have my Sony Walkman. It's a posh'un with Megabass AND Groove! lol All touch control and only uses one AA battery. Shocking it was only 10'ish years ago we used things like this... now it's iPods or our mobiles for music on the go
Very nice unit! Sounds really good! The tape sounds terrific!
I have a couple late 90s Sonys, one with a digital tuner/clock and auto reverse. No Dolby NR or bass boost, but the model above it did. I'll make a video of it someday.
Aqua - Barbie Girl sure brings back memories...a guy on our ship when I did my military duty in the navy here in Swden played the album it was on every day for weeks until we puked :D
I have a shockwave too. I think its from the early 90's

How rare are the camoflauge colored Shockwave tape players?
TheJoeyEmilyShow 11 months ago
@TheJoeyEmilyShow I haven't seen any camoflauge ones... just the bright yellow.

@vwestlife I just ordered a camoflauge Shockwave tape player and I'm fixing to make a video of it to put up on there.

Whatever happened to that cheap Durabrand?

@vwestlife There's the spirit. The Panasonic Shockwave tape player was a top shelf model in it's day.

No tape motor hum either. Never had a portable cassette player that didn't have that noise.
