  • Dear god. This new album is so fucking great. I honestly cannot think of one bad song out of all of them. I've listened to all of these songs at least 2-3 times a day every day.

  • I actually like that this song is structurally similar to 'Learning to Live'; and that 'On The Backs of Angels' is structured very much like 'Pull Me Under'. It's like the band have come full circle. They've gone back to their roots, and created some of their best songs in years

  • The masters have come home. Their best song in years. They should let Myung write more often!

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD!

  • I like :D

  • portnoy is better!

  • @matheusmatrixthx lol mangini didnt even wrote the drum lines for the album.give the man a chance to be in the creative process than we will see if he is better than portnoy or not!i like the drums of this album specially outcry and lost not forgotten...but i saw them both live portnoy and mangini and mangini completly rocks!

  • @Ezzakul

he did write the drum lines for the album...

  • @DrummingHat Petrucci did some programmed demo lines for mangini use has guideline..The drumlines are kind of a mix of the 2..

  • I love that both songs are kinda related... Learning to live is amazing, I wanted more, they give me more

  • it is like a reloaded version of learning to live with a million of charges of dynamite o that guitar riff!!

  • EPIC!

  • That's my favourite Guitar solo...! woooww....aaahwww.....uuuuuu....:)

I think Petrucci is THE Best!!!! Dream Theater is eternal <3

  • @kirksoma81

like the love "love is the dance of eternity"

  • 05:17 best ever!!! :)

  • Part 1:

This song has the same sequential pattern reminiscent of Myung's "Learning To Live". Let's break it down shall we: 00:00 - start, 00:16 - start with fast tempo, 00:50 - mid-part pattern. 01:14 - start w/ upbeat tempo, 01:34 - slow down rhythm then at 02:04 - vocals, 02:43 - vocals w/ background climax. Kinda like "I look at the world and...", 03:04 - you can imitate the patten w/ the line "the ways that your...", 03:41 - this is where the climax becomes a statement type.

  • Part 2:

Then on 04:21 - start with fast tempo (2nd take), 04:38 - its more of a repeat of 03:04 but a slight difference in movement, 05:02 - mid instrumental section begins, 05:03 till 06:09 fast instrumental tempo and it slows down to JP's 1st solo, 06:42 - JP 2nd solo (take note: the solo sequences were reversed if you compare it with learning to live), 08:09 - climax starts and tension progresses and builds up till it shifts to 08:51 - start of 2nd instrumental part,

  • Part 3:

09:07 - sequence is very improv instrumental. More keyboarding, 09:51 - goes back to the start upbeat tempo but more variation (this sequence if everyone might recall can be your "Wait for Sleep" section if I'm not mistaken), 10:36 - final vocal part/same as entrance statment section but slight variation, 11:25 - do finale.

  • Part 4:

Slight differences from Learning to live sequence: 1) In between the 8 to 9 minute mark, Labrie did not have a screaming high note section(no need to!); 2) there is no individual Keyboard section like what Kevin Moore did for Learning to Live 3) Ending sequence is slightly original in this song. Other than that, listen to both songs. You'll be amazed at how compostion can be a labor and a bore if repeated (X)more times.

  • this song just keeps growing on me the more and more i listen

  • in the end, i think in 11:29 this music theme is like in pocahontas...:p i am not joking...check this video "14 - Pocahontas/Soundtrack - I'll never See Him Again [Instrumental]" in youtube in 11:39....its almost the same...i might be wrong...

  • @GNR4Alife Does sound the same

  • @Niccosy yeahh, i believe the same...but it is so weird to believe...

  • @GNR4Alife Yeah, it's "If I never knew you...". Other people have noticed the similarity too. But I highly doubt they got it from that. It's a pretty simple melodic idea and it's not like they carried it through that far in. However, they often do clearly "borrow" from other songs and artists and openly admit it.

  • when i hear this i can't help but picture Link from Zelda fighting through hordes of enemies to get to his lady

  • I f*cking love this song!!

  • seeing them next week...so excited!!

  • this is my new favorite song of dreamtheater and all other bands and... WOOOOAH! *___*

  • I smoked some pot and listened to this song, gives you a travel outside your body!

  • @Creperume With this song I don't need to smoke anything to travel to another dimension.

  • @Creperume I've only smoked pot about a dozen times in my life, and for some reason Dream Theater was never on. I have to try this!

  • Try to listen to it at double speed.

  • ormai di musica ne ho ascoltata davvero tanta... gira che ti rigira... torno sempre a voi cari DT. Non siete solo tecnica. Siete tantissime cose...

  • This song is the one that should have been nominated (and won) for the grammys

  • @nickman287 Yea I agree, its so awesome

  • Nuevo album de DT, como siempre excelentes

  • I like how DT doesn't care about the users uploading its videos, The copyright for them is a shit ^_^

  • @Schwartzdying If it wasn't for youtube, I would have never got to know metal and prog. I would have never bought Dream Theater's albums. Youtube is the biggest advertisement for music.

  • @crzgfx I agree with you, but my comment wasn't directly to say that youtube is a piece of shit.

  • @Schwartzdying I did not say that you think that - I just don't agree with ACTA and so on, because Youtube is in fact very economical.

  • @crzgfx Can't you understand what was my first comment? I said about DT's members are very kind because they don't care about the people who uploads its videos, i didn't say anything bad about Youtube...

  • @Schwartzdying If not criticizing you, I was just saying my opinion. I know that you did not say anything bad about YT.

  • DT has found the word "melody" back.. at first i thought Kevin Moore was playing on this tune.

  • I think that if Black Clouds And Silver Linings had a door to clear sky what is this album´s image then next album´s image is far away in the horizon and there is a mountain. Sorry for my bad english only 12 years old :)

  • @XxVibrationVoicexX probably like always, the rope will be cut, he won't be in the sky and the sky will be dark colour lol D:

  • I've been on concert at the DT-Show at 2nd of Feb. in D'dorf, Germany. And it was a very great evening. DT-Shows are still dfifferent to Rock/Metal shows, it was kind of familiar and not just posing.

This piece of music has been the last one of the official setlist and it has been like the whole show - simply impressive. I've got to say, i like it!

  • 3:40 Awesome tight riff!

  • Well if Black Clouds and Silver Linings had the clear sky door to segue into A Dramatic Turn of Events than maybe the next album cover will be inside the plane or around the clown.

  • @daron51 or the airplanes destination.

  • a new song of dream theater beginning 12:21

  • @ShokkoMonster Beneath The Surface

  • thought it was metallica at very beginning

  • @KoRn0Graphy2010 if metallica could play like that

  • Why hasn't Myung been doing this the whole time he's been with Dream Theater?

  • 03:40 <3

  • Comment removed

  • "Instrumental Mode" activate at 5:02 to 10:36 ;)

  • Dream Theater at it's best. They found melody again.

  • @ainschie I wasn't aware they ever lost it.

  • panflutesolowat

  • @ZarkatLimited you must be retarded or something

  • @filmmanager5 I dont see anything retarded there, this is one of their best in my opinion.

  • @Hgreedy he said "only" lol :)

  • 5:19 - 6:40 the best musically sex!

  • Dream Theater!

  • How the fuck are the drums considered stale!? Crazy...

  • One of the most beautiful solo of John Petrucci!

Take a look to my channel! (and if you could give me some advices) :D

  • 07:11 Sooo Pink Floyd :)

  • @HerreHognestad

just imagining Nick Mason attempting to play this made me laugh out loud!

  • @Lokar92 Check DT's homepage for the direct link to the poll.

  • One of the best music I've heard.

  • This is my favorite track off their latest cd. Just one word: AMAZING!

  • masterpiece

  • idk why but for some reason i really dont care for this album at all. i cant be the only one, because im a life long dream theater fan

  • @JohnPetrucci251 Mike Portnoy?

  • @Akron162 haha

  • @Akron162

    Hahahaha brilliant

  • @JohnPetrucci251 I have to agree to an extent. Don't get me wrong, I definately enjoy the album, but between the awkward sence of a silver lines extension, and the bitter feeling of Mike's departure, there's this feeling of a lackluster effort compared to their earlier work. I honestly think Octavarium was their last masterpiece, the latest three albums just haven't been up to parr. again, not to say they suck, but for DT, it's feeling a bit recycled. great, but recycled.

  • @espkingf250 agree 100%

  • @espkingf250 The thing most of us can't understand is what condition their musical relationship was in, and their reasons for splitting. The only conclusion I can come to is that it must have gotten to the point that their creative relationship was more or less deconstructive to the entire process.. So they must have all agreed it was best for everyone and in their best interest to split. Besides that shouldn't be the focus. I'm just thankful that they didn't end the band on such a note.

  • @Thedude112123 much agreed, though it's still a great shame what happened, happened. and especially once Portnoy left the band, A7X decided they'd go with a different drummer in the end, that's just low.

  • @espkingf250 That sucks, that's why I believe that A7X SUCKS! ._.

  • @gesdeath132 110% agree.

  • @espkingf250 Thanks bro.

  • 02:43 Sends shivers down my spine. So good...

  • 10:03 Final Fantasy Battle Theme anyone?

  • @mykemztr i always said that!

  • @mykemztr Hahh maybe from Final Fantasy Tactics Right? xD

  • Holy shit does everyone have to say "21 people..." to get thumbs up?!

  • 9:50 is orgasmic

  • 21 people don't dream in a theater.

  • 21 people are justin bieber's fan D:

  • You want to know what DT is about? Listen to:

    3:42 onwards for the riff

    10:11 onwards till chorus

7:10 to 8:52 for pure awesomeness

  • Oh what a fantastic piece of art, as much as I love Portnoy, I gotta say DT seem like they're gonna do well without him. The riff beginning about 3:40 is just so... perfect. It embodies what DT really are, they're not just average prog metal, they're powerful and uplifting. This song is by far the masterpiece of this great album, probably the best song they have written since Six Degrees. All I can say is, I can't wait for the next album, if it goes the way this went, it'll be magnificant.

  • This song is just incredible. Nothing short of 25 years of musical mastery, hard work and personal growth could have led to such a masterpiece.

  • This song is pure art. How does a 12 and a half minute song seem so utterly short? Well done DT, the bar is set high for your next album ;P

  • @nimanima777 Hell yeah !!

  • @nimanima777

because they have been doing it for the past 25 years or so by now. 12 minutes to the rest of the world is only 4 minutes to them.

  • Love the beginning!!

  • who the fuck needs weed when you have stuff like this!!! totally high!!

  • This is quite possibly one of the best things I've ever heard; it eclipses anything DT has made for a long, long time. It looks like they don't need Portnoy after all.

  • at 11:30 I officially died

  • 7:10 is awesome and doesn't sound like DT

  • Love that intro.. can;t stop commenting!!!!

  • Song sucks at 12:26

  • @diaphanoux So you dont like Dream Theater from 12:26 to 12:27, fucker. haha, just joking :)

  • @diaphanoux In fact it sucks at 12:28 ;)

  • @diaphanoux i agree it just goes dead silent for hours

  • Orgasmic!

  • @MrJonny89

best youtube comment on music in history !!

  • @Rizzy55 Actually some guy stated the following in the comment section of a Myung video: "My gf just gave birth to John Myung's child watching this video". Intriguing.

  • No disrespect to Labrie.. but am i the only one who gets edgy or mad when he starts singing.. i just wanna keep listening the monster guys!!!(Petrucci, Mangini, Rudess and Myung)

  • How true is that Petrucci wrote the Drum parts for this record?.. i read that somewhere... That cannot be true!!!.. Please... comment with evidence or something convincing... Thanks

  • @diaphanoux Petrucci did write a basic drum track while they were writing the music, but they sent it to Mangini and he "added his own stuff" to it also. Read it in Wikipedia and saw it in an interview too.

  • @diaphanoux petrucci and rudess put aa drum track down for him sent it to him and he just learned em and played them its in an artisan news interview

  • @diaphanoux don't worry about it, Mangini is getting used to the band. He'll be going hard on the next album.

  • @dmdollinar08 Your Gay

  • 6:05 - 6:35 makes me imagine a lone viking warrior standing on a grassy hill in the calm air in front of towering snowy mountains, inspecting his sword and reflecting on his early life while beholding an approaching crowd of warriors before the coming battle

  • gods at work here people! dt's new masterpiece... john myung is a god among men!!!!

  • the intro riff is like sex.

  • 9:10 Rush mode.

  • Is it me or at 1:45 does it start to sound from Learning to Live? Either way this is my favorite track off the album it rocks!

  • I had a wife and four kids before I heard Dream Theater was coming, sold em straight away as slaves on ebay for my ticket.

  • This song cured my erectile dysfunction.

  • 8:10 - Star Wars? : F

  • Petrucci's solo at 7:10 is so awesome. I can hear a mix of rock, blues, jazz fusion and metal soloing. If you pay attention to the licks you'll notice

  • @kostakos1331 a lot of jazz, it is petrucci at his best.

  • My Illusions are also already broken, no one left, just disillusions!...

  • @hitbycupidsarrow probably their own signature.... 13/FUCK

  • Great...This song makes me fly to the sky......Each time I do my homework, I always listen to this song, and all ideas can come up to my mind...

  • Been practising the guitar solo for a week now, I can hit every note perfectly, got the right distortion, got the delay, got the humbuckers, nailed the timing, but it just won't sound like Petrucci, what am I doing wrong?

  • @RideTheRoses Sorry to say my friend, you can practice all you want, but you can' t be God.

  • 7:12 - 8:55 It's sex for my ears! My god it's fucking good!

They have achieved greatness with this masterpiece...

  • @Anarky35 try 0:00 - 12:27 lol. this song is their best ever.

  • @guitardudenice 7:12 - 8:55 is really my favorite part, but you're right!!! This song is awesome

  • I've watched this video about the same amount of times YouTube's counter says...
