  • I watched this damn promo video about a hundred times when I was anticipating the Mega CD...how little I knew. Still, cheesy though it is, I still love the music in this.

  • haha i had this in VHS

  • what name the classic music theme of begin?

  • joe satrianie song in the middle :D

  • Great! I remember seeing this on a tape that came with Mean Machines (Sega). The same tape also show some Game Gear Tazamania and the utterly incredible Streets of Rage 2 and Sonic 2! Last year i finally bought a Sega CD of ebay. Downloaded Sonic CD, Final Fight, Lunar and wel... the rest of the games suck! Yup... That's correct!

  • super smash bros. window

  • *Sigh*

It's a promtional video, not an advert. It was given away free with the greteast console magazine ever written, Mean Machines.

  • does anyone know who made the (clay) animation?

(they also did some 90's MTV intros

  • Back in 1992, anyone who worked with early PC CD-ROM's knew that the claims Sega were making here were just not realistic. I remember seeing this shown in a Virgin Megastore at the time and having real doubts about it. They were hyping it up to be far, far more than it was.

  • What a load of Sega BS, the Intellivision was the first 16bit console. If we stretch it a little, the Amiga and Atari St were both 16bit, out way before Megadrive.

  • Keep the Mega CD and give me the women :D

  • 1:00 I hear LA instrument called "Soundtrack"!I HAVE LA SYNTH AND IT WAS COMPETITOR TO YAMAHA FM!And sega genesis has yamaha's fm chip, what the irony...

  • SEGA!!

  • I want one i want one !!!!

  • .. and a reason to live... umm if that was reason to live.. shoot me nao.

  • Almost looks like a tool video

  • from 03.50 - 04.45 is the best bit

  • Night Trap was the best!

  • never forget gimicks like this when dealing with upgrades and gaming

  • Check this out, when I went to this, I got the hologram mario mean machines mag, signed by the whole staff. And I sold it for about a quid in like 1996. Man, I would pay like £500 to get that back.

  • Mega cd is a GREAT console but they dint know how take out all its power in the 90s.

  • @cobh8crew2009 most of the games sucked.

a console is only as good as it's games

  • Of course the reality was somewhat different. Crackly FMV + Rubbish linear gameplay = no fun. Either that, or the games were just copies of Megadrive titles with a few bells and whistles attached. A handful of excellent titles stand out, such as Sonic CD or Shining Force CD. But the system overall was a gigantic con, and caused irrepairable damage to Sega's credibility..

  • It's no wonder the Mega-CD wasn't more popular when Sega were using below-average games to advertise it. Okay, so Batman Returns is very good, but all the others are just plain awful. It's hard to believe that they included the atrocious Make My Own Video in an advert intended to *sell* the Mega-CD! If this video had featured the platform's best titles -- Sonic CD, Snatcher, Eternal Champions, Lunar, Final Fight and Silpheed -- instead of its worst, maybe the Mega-CD would have had more luck.

  • It was inevitable. If you were there at the time and saw FMV on a computer or in a game for the first time you would be obsessed with Night Trap over Sonic CD until you actually bought and played the games.

We were duped and it's a shame. Sega used to be a great source for counter-cultural and cult games.

  • Great! I had this ad on tape early 90's. Wishing for a Mega CD i could never buy! I got it with Mean Machines, a UK console mag...

  • Me too, first issue of Mean Machines Sega :-)

Finally realised my dream a few years ago and I now have a full Mega Drive 1, Mega CD 1 and 32x setup *joy*

  • I'd love her to plug into me :)

  • I know, she's hot, and it's so sexy when she bites her bottom lip. 2:39 Yep, she can sit on my interface. I'll give her some RAM. I'd like to port into her. She can play with my memory stick. You like my joystick. I'll bit your byte. Sit on my laptop. Check out my harddrive. Want me to reboot your baud. Sorry I got carried away. I'm bored.
  • @janX9 pervert

  • LOL I had forgotten I wrote that, I really must have been bored.

You gotta admit some of that was kinda witty, as cheesy as it sounded...

I'd megadirve her, or maybe Calculate-her.

    calculatOR ...calculateHER. It's kinda funny.

Yeah, so obviously I'm bored again :)

    I could go on... ... ...But I won't.

  • lol 500 megs of pure plastic!!

    loving it!! lol

i used to have this on vhs with a black cardboard case and we's watch it all the time wishing we had one

  • excellent - any more things FatAgnes ?

  • Well haven't you just got a whole load of sand in your vagina tonight, you irritable little madam?

Between your piss poor grasp of grammar, punctuation, the English language in general and your childish overall reaction to a harmless little jokey comment, I'd be surprised if you were 3 years old, let alone 30.

Let's be honest, you've quite adequately proven yourself to be the only 'thick moron' here :)

  • You're not familiar with the concept of sarcasm are you?

  • LOL, I actually remember seeing this vid back in the day! I don't know where, maybe they gave it away with a magazine or something. I just remember the big poster in Woolworths which shattered my dreams when it said the Mega CD was about £350! I had no chance!

  • This must be the most epic AD of all time

  • cool ad

  • This came free with Mean Machines I think?

  • This is like the longest commercial EVER ,haha

  • It's a shame nothing was as successful after Sega released the Mega Drive. Rather funny that this VHS actually portrayed the Mega CD as an awesome system when, in reality, a couple of good games, horrid video and a shitload of point and shoot games. Saying that, Sega's ads in the UK were always awesome.

  • SONIC CD!

  • cobracomand rules

  • when does this console come out?? can't wait, it looks awesome!

  • Was that from a VHS?!?! The picture is so clean and sharp its amazing!

  • wasn't the music at 1:45 also the theme from ufc1

  • the music at 1:45 sounds very U2

  • WOW what a long advert ... preety good tho :D

  • That was gr8! Love the retro and metal feel. 5 stars!

  • this ad feels like i was watching it from a old e3 sega press conference, kick ass vid bro

  • i have this on video and i seem to remember the music being on formula 1 on the ps1 also

  • Wow, i been looking for this for ages, as you all say it was a video that came free with a mean machines magazine. The music when it shows the megadrive games is awesome! what is it? I had a megadrive when i was 12 and i'd have done anything for a mega CD, but at £279.99 my mum said 'On ya bike!' Great video, christ that takes me back.

  • My mum bought me the mega CD as an xmas present the first year it came out. Oh the games were dire, but i didnt care. it was pure awesome as far as i cared.

Still, not worth the price tag, but i had years(?) of fun

  • I remember getting this advert with a gaming magazine years ago(mean machines.... a video tape with a mag- hell yeah!!) saved for one of these for ages when I was 13- looking back now... THANK FUCK I DIDN'T GET ONE!!!

  • do you know what the song used in the beginning is?

  • oh my god i used to have one of those when i was a kid saved up aload of pennys to get one what a waste of time that was the star wars game was kool though lol

  • lol i was so suckered in by this all those years ago it just goes to show how an advert can make you want to buy crap. 5* so as i dont have to dig my old tape out and try to remember how to hook a vhs machine up to a crt tv.

  • this is like some distopian fashist future where you are drugged and forced to play crap mega cd games lol

  • Rofl, old times. I remember wacking the Sega Megadrive VHS tape into my VCR and watching this.

  • ah so you're the one who bought one

  • oh how i remember me that tape that came with the mean machine magazine ! i so looked forwards to the mega cd, untill i actually got hold of one. i hoped for outrun to appear on it, but all it got was games i did not wanted, exept for batman returns (the sprite scaling racing part, not that crappy platform game that also acompanied it) and jaguar xj220, where you could design your own tracks, inclding what you wanted to be alongside the road. the rest was, for me, rather dissapointing.

  • come to think of talking about the vhs tape i think i had that too on the front of the mag i brought mags become collectors items i have all the old ps1 mags and a couple of sega cd mags.

  • yeah thoses where the days brings back memorys for a lot of us pity the other machines they made just didnt do as well mega cd was there best machine.

  • Awesome! Me and my friends watched this over and over back when it came out, we were so excited about it! Plus, i seem to remember this same tape from Mean Machines also had the first Streets of Rage 2 footage on it. Great times!

  • I remember this being sellotaped to the front of Mean Machines Sega in 1993. Happy times! :-D

  • I remember this being sellotaped to the front of Mean Machines Sega in 1993. Happy times! :-D

  • Que gran video...recuerdos a tope;sin palabras.

  • well im sold.

  • I remember seeing this when it aired :) sooo long. Also remember studying it in business class back at school. Apparently it still remains as the most expensive advertising campaign to date and longest adverts ever. Time life, eat your heart out. Thanks for uploading!

  • What channel showed this on TV in the UK? Something at the arse end of BSB??

  • bump.

BSB was already well merged into Sky by 1993

  • @orangestew Yeah I still have the Mean Machines VHS tape with this on it. While I was working at Sega here in Australia we used it to try and convince some local big chains to hop on board locally with the whole launch. It actually failed to impress the big wigs at the time.

  • wow, that was the fucking creepiest thing ive ever seen. sega cd wasnt bad, but it wasnt good.

  • You're right. Another video said that this shit appeared on TV...whut? If I were European, I'd shit bricks for seeing this over the entire commercial break for Eight minutes.

  • they showcase the system by showing off it's worst games. Great job, sega.

  • What's the name of the song after 1.45 - is it U2 or some similar band?

Also, why the hell don't we get adverts like this for next generation consoles? cheapskates...

  • yeah, what's that music he's talking about? not back to the shalla bal

  • aah the good old mega drive, legend!

  • OK. found the song title, it's

Back to Shalla-Bal by Joe Satriani.

  • If you bought the first mean machines sega mag you got this on a vhs.

I moved a few years ago and lost mine as i wanted to put it up on here and also find out the song thats played.

Thanks for putting up an old gem.

By the way does anyone know what the tune during the mega cd section is called. I know it was used again on a psx game.

  • I'm really focusing more on the reason of the Playstations exsistance it was orignally to be a CD addon to the SNES so nintendo could compete with sega on the disc format when nintendo scrapped the idea sony decided to continue and then came the playstation.

also without sega creating this we probably would have not had dreamcast which gave microsoft a reason to get out in the game system industry now nintendo didn't use optical discs until the miniDVD format came in

  • Oh right, sorry about that, I never realised that the Playstation was developed as a rival to MegaCD. Just read quite an interesting article on wikipedia about the history.

  • Think about it this way without Sega making this system we probably would be without the Playstation 1/2/3 ,Gamecube and Wii would probably be cartridge based (or maybe even a weird obscure format),Xbox and the 360 would probably never exsist.

  • I think your handing a lot of credit to Sega for a change from cartridge to disc based media. The preferred media format would have probably changed to discs at that time anyway due to the costs of manufacture dropping.

  • You could equally say that the Amiga's A570 CD drive paved the way for future systems using that format, a claim that is also unlikely to be true. The world could have done without the MegaCD and things would still be the same, and so few people bought it that the world didn't notice it was there anyway! haha

  • to DJNesSimepolys

Sega Megadrive was the 2nd console in use cd's. The fist one was PC-Engine in 1988.

  • I'm sorry but SEGA can have no complaints about going under after the sorry mess that was the MegaCD/32X/Saturn trilogy.

  • i smashed mine up , wish i still had it :P

  • yea i remember getting a sherlock holmes game for this crap one christmas, I had so much fun with that i can tell you

  • Did you use it as a coaster or a frisbee?

  • 500 Mega Bytes of POWER!!

  • WOW, actual MOVIE QUALITY VIDEO in a GAME??!!!! My cousin had a Mega CD, and it was really cool at the time, and it was something I really wanted to own. looking back, it actually looks really shit.

  • i had this in the early 90s when i was about 10

  • Genial el mega cd.Sega para siempre

  • Great rip, thanks. The only other known has awful video/sound.

  • That's exactly what I thought when I came across the other version, it needed far better treatment than it had previously got.

  • full screen no pixelete and much quality of sound on this video ok

  • thank god i still have both of mine....somewhere

  • This thing was made back when all they thought a CD was good for was FMV games.

  • creepy guys at 30-1:00

  • It's "Full Image rotation and scaling" you idiot

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

  • The FMV games are god awful

  • WHAT, the Mega-CD is a true godsend

  • Discoder, what about Sonic CD, Lunar?

The Mega-CD had several good games.

It also had crap. Loads of crap.

  • I can only comment on what I've played. Too many interactive movies on it. Though sticking on the auto cheat on Road Avenger and just watching it makes it a fairly enjoyable anime.

  • Can anybody tell me the title of the song starts at 1:44???? Thanks

  • Holy FRAK that was cryptic!

  • So many shite games as launch titles. Snatcher and Shining Force CD were the only games worth it on that console.

  • well not quite. Lunar 1 and 2, popful mail and vay come to mind there are a few others too...

  • Never played 'em. But I might look for them. I've actually still got my Mega CD. Whenever I can bother to repair my Mega Drive I might look into it.

  • lunar came out for ps1 also and might be easier to find, popful is one of the best side scrollers i've ever played...

  • i still got this on tape from a sega mag...threw it out

  • Well which one is it? You still got it or you threw it out?

  • this one...i threw it out just a few months ago I like to hored things you see and got so much crap from the 90s that were given away by Sega Mags

  • I always love how sega was "IN YO FACE" with everything they came out with. "Sega does what NintenDON't" "This what's coming at ya you can't handel it!"

  • hands up who got suckered for the hype !ME!

dont remember this vid in the uk - vagely mem it may have been played in game stores?

£230 to watch grainy video and play megadrive games with cd sound ! bye bye sega - funny cos this add resembles their arrogance at the time of the mega cd

  • ive just gone back in time who remembers playing xj220 on it

  • This was how they advertised Sega CD in Europe? Wow. Much better campaign then initially stateside

  • Thanks for uploading this... I too went to Gamesmaster live, top event but didnt get this video. Instead I got it on the cover of Mean Machines Sega and it still have it. I have a few other retro VHSs, need to try and capture them.

  • Wow... you just pieced in a bit of my childhood!!

  • I dont remember the controllers being that big!!

  • final fight CD best game

  • Thanks for this - good quality and pretty cool to watch!

  • wow, I remember I had this on a video I got free with a magazine, I was impressed but never did get the mega cd for my megadrive, it was a flop wasn't it? maybe the beginning of Segas fall from grace (in hardware). I returned to Sega with Dreamcast though, that was a brilliant machine.
