@IRNatman This setup in the video was 3 x Nvidia cards. The new setup I run uses 2x AMD/ATI Eyefinity 6 cards, and all 6 monitors connect to only one of the video cards. This is by far the better way to do it now.
@d2globalinc Ah, I see. Another question - If I were to switch to Ubuntu, would I still be able to use windows applications? I've heard of wine - but I've also read that some programs/games don't work right. Also driver problems. Is any of that true?
@IRNatman Yes, wine can be an issue, as can drivers, personally I prefer VMWare Workstation to run windows apps in their own virtual environment and with VMWares unity feature, the applications look like they are running in the native OS.. With a modern Quad Core or better CPU this can be just as fast as running Windows Apps on a bare windows install. This setup works great for a work environment.
LINUX is awesome.....why. ...because anyone has code accesss....Windows was using Linux behind the scenes to enhance Microsoft. If funny because Microsoft said that opensource was a problem....Google uses linux to maintain their servers...IBM does tooo...I wonder where would this companies be if it wasn't for linux open source...
@jrovang It's in the ubuntu forums, and many people took this and ran with it on more recent version of ubuntu/kubuntu. I'm not sure what the current status is now with it, but I know that last I checked the AMD Eyefinity method was the best route to go with their proprietary drivers.
@mackenzii709 because it has more applications and games, and even if you use WINE, games will have issues like Crysis, etc. Also what makes Linux better? It has driver issues and there aren't many drivers for linux anyways.
WIndows is good for games BUT Linux is more customizable, Open Source, Powerful, and if you use Linux Mint or Ubuntu it is very user friendly. You can do alot more then you will ever be able to do on Windows.
dude how do you game on this I have trouble with playing urban terror or open arena where the resolution is wrong is like is unevenly split across my two screens :/
@farter1255 This setup at the time was 3x XFX Nvidia 8800GTX Ultra Video cards w/ 2 DVI ports on each card. This system has since been replaced by another one with two ATI Eyefinity 6 cards that support 6 displayport monitors each for a total of 12, but we only power 6x 23" samsung MD230 monitors with it at this time.
@polyglass62 Yup - this is my old system, my latest system uses 2x HD5870's, but only one is used to hook to 6 MD230 Samsung monitors.. Its a much better way to do it than this one, but the HD5870's weren't available yet when this system in the video here was built. I haven't tested ubuntu in awhile, but last time I did - it was working with the 6 monitors w/ compiz, etc. using AMD's proprietary drivers..
looks like a dream but now that i have a dual set i realize this amount of monitors would never be something suitable to work with without feeling sick after one hour im afraid...
man, i really want to do something like this ... but im having problems with this ... why you didnt posted a how to yet? lol, just let me now, are you using xinerama or something like that ? just tell me tre programs and drivers ... im stuck
I officially believe this to a hoax, it's just not possible to tell Linux to have more than 1 monitor AND compiz AND not have windows maximize properly. IT CANNOT BE DONE.
@funkwurm Check the ubuntu forums, it can and has been done by many people. But it's not as easy as it once was with ubuntu 8.04 -> 9.10 with this config. However the newest version of this machine uses AMD/ATI Eyefinity 6 cards to do the same thing w/ full compiz, etc. across all 6 monitors.
.... do i need to install 2 graphics cards or will 1 do? final and third question, does ubanto run Adobe programs (fireworks, dreamweaver, flash, etc) and movie making programs like after effects?
Nice! Ubanto actually has the graphics close to a mac. I have never seen this on a "pc". The whole reason i was going to get a mac is because of the graphics but I would rather build my own desktop now that i see Ubanto is better (Graphics+programing). Three question though. Can you run Microsoft office (excel, power point, word, etc.) on Ubanto? How about an illegally download of Microsoft office ;)? Second question, I want to run 2 maybe 3 screens on my computer....
Hi, can you still do this with ubuntu 10.04??? I'm trying to enable my 4 monitors but I can't get more the 2 working at the same time... I heard it was some limitations they have "added" in X :( I hope 10.10 removes it...
@Thetrutv Sure ;) - until you try 4.. then 5... then 6 ;) - which is how I progressed way back in the day with CRT's.. Its nice to have all the screen realestate for keeping my IM, email, and a web browser always open and visiable.. Then the rest are used for toolbar/editing windows and i can take up 3 full monitors just with my panels and layout for the Adobe Flash editor.. It saves a LOT of time :D - never have to go searching for things - its just there.
@Thetrutv Yup - it's for work - but it has its advantages if I would like to play a game.. I acutally have a newer version of this setup now using dual ATI Eyefinity 5870 cards.. I'll be posting videos of this system eventually.

I'd love to see a guide for 10.04. I've been looking around but haven't found one. Also, you never really did post a full how-to for this. I only saw a brief how to explaining the actual xorg config.
@walter0bz yeah sorry I should have said I was thinking of gaming. I imagined the image being split into pieces and making things a bit distracting. Mind you I know a few people who have dual set ups and reckon its better :S

When I do it (albeit in Open Suse' KDE) it just duplicates the tasks on both monitors. I want it to move the task to each individual task bar like Ultramon does.
If I had that setup I'd become a villain and take over the world, not even superman could stop me and my ingenuity! Damn economy is keeping from buying things I want
@DjaveBikinus No flipping back and forth when you want to compare or see documents, apps, web pages, etc. side by side.. Plus multiple places to have panels, widgets, etc open and always avail.
damn how can u set up monitors like that?? i wuz just running my dell inspiron mini with it's monitor and my tv, thats all i can get, same with a desktop pc, only 2 ( what i know of ) so how do u get more than 2? i'd use my laptop screen, my tv, and my projector >:D

@rat1a1tat1tat Don't knock it until you try it ;) - Start with 3 and see how much more work you get done.. It just multiplies by there.. If you do any kind of graphics or design work - its nice to have all your toolbars / trays, etc - on separate screens - and still have enough screen real-estate to open up browser windows and look at documentation, notes, email, etc. Not to mention manage multiple servers at the same time in the datacenter :P
Cool, but goddamn rediqulous. Also if they are all of the same brand of moniters, you might want to set them to default settings so the brightness is the same for each of them
Think of it like a table or desk where you can spread out all your articles, howto's, notes, email, pictures, video etc all at once and see it all and compare things very easily.. The time saved just having items always visiable to reference when working on something is worth every penny this costs x100
@greatdrums you can't say one is better than the other, it's a matter of the people that are using it. If you want to have it easy but simple Mac os is the right choice for you, but for more professional users, windows or even linux is way better.
@UNNAM3D82 so what you do is trade in your pc, no matter how much money you spent on it (keep the monitors though), and trade it in for an 8 core mac pro running 2 x 2.93GHz quad cores, 32GB RAM, 8TB Hard drive and a few graphics cards. Granted, it is "slightly" more than your average pc but you have incredibly fast simple life of a mac and you have bootcamp or Parallels and you can run Windows or Linux, or any other OS thats out there.
I actually wasn't talking about the hardware, but while we're on it, you get MUCH more into a PC than that, even for a lower price!
A PC is just MUCH more compatible and cutomizable than a Mac, both on software and hardware, so why buy a Mac if you CAN use a PC? The performance and price is better in the end...
Looks awesome and all but, who needs 6 monitors? XD

Cool, but goddamn rediqulous. Also if they are all of the same brand of moniters, you might want to set them to default settings so the brightness is the same for each of them

My opinion to this, I think 6 monitors are confusing to me.

Think of it like a table or desk where you can spread out all your articles, howto's, notes, email, pictures, video etc all at once and see it all and compare things very easily.. The time saved just having items always visiable to reference when working on something is worth every penny this costs x100

the only thing that would make that better is if you were using mac osx instead of windows

-1 for you thinking its windows and +1 for saying OSX is better than windows, so you are now at 0.

@d2globalinc Depends on what windows you are talking about.

@d2globalinc What's your point of view about OSX and Linux?
dzedakuzohl 1 year ago
@greatdrums you can't say one is better than the other, it's a matter of the people that are using it. If you want to have it easy but simple Mac os is the right choice for you, but for more professional users, windows or even linux is way better.
UNNAM3D82 1 year ago
@UNNAM3D82 so what you do is trade in your pc, no matter how much money you spent on it (keep the monitors though), and trade it in for an 8 core mac pro running 2 x 2.93GHz quad cores, 32GB RAM, 8TB Hard drive and a few graphics cards. Granted, it is "slightly" more than your average pc but you have incredibly fast simple life of a mac and you have bootcamp or Parallels and you can run Windows or Linux, or any other OS thats out there.

@greatdrums
