Grande interpretazione! il Maestro Lislevand terrà delle masterclass e un concerto ad ingresso gratuito il 13 Novembre 2010 a Milano nel festival Corde d'Autunno alle ore 18:00 cordedautunno.it
@badguitarp The theorbo was created primarily to accompany singers in early opera. Despite its other name, chitaronne, it is not a guitar but a member of the lute family. The body is so large that the top two strings (closest to the ground) are tuned down an octave to prevent string breakage). A guitar analogy would be having your small E and B strings tuned an octave lower, so that your third string would be the highest.
Its beautiful but I wonder why its so rhythmically straight? I don't much inegales, like in Lislevand's Belle Homicide CD? Still, Lislevand is the maestro, I'm sure he could explain it...
Not on the lute admittedly, but the finest exponent of notes egales has to be Kenneth Gilbert on the harpsichord. A masterclass for all interested in French music of the 17th-18th centuries...
we really don't know how lucky we have been to view this wonderful performance of a bitchin' difficult piece! Maestro Lislevand is one of the best lutenists living today. we are all in awe. yah, maybe he looks a little like Mike Myers but hey Mike should be honored to know he looks like Rolf!
Its a beautiful performance but its not that difficult! Have you tried it on theorbo? it fits under the fingers very well, which is one of the great things about a lot of the lute repertoire...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Theorbo was sever supposed to be a solo instrument. It's a continuo instrument, which is why there is very little solo music around. This would probably sound better on an archlute, which is tuned like a Renaissance lute, but with the long neck and bass strings.
Actually, de Visee's solo theorbo music exploits the theorbo's peculiar re-entrant tuning so well that it would make no sense whatever to (transcribe) and play it on the archlute.
Does anyone know if there is a Lislevand recording with this de Visee piece? It is far and away the most beautiful solo theorbo peice I've heard, but I have to come to YouTube to listen to it!!
I'm having trouble finding much solo theorbo music at all. Much more common as a continuo instrument, I suppose.
'This player' has since played better; listen to him on his disk 'La Belle Homicide'. As to whether Lislevand is 'Vapid' - one man's 'metronomical' is another man's 'subtle'.
Most theorbos, I believe, have only six fretted strings. This one has eight. Is that historical? Do any scores require the fretting/stopping of the seventh and/or eighth strings?
This has been in my favorites for a long while and I love listening to it often, it's so beautifully played and the tone is about the best of the lutes on youtube. I kept thinking "who does he remind me of?" and then tonight I realized that he reminds me of Harold from Harold and Maude.
This instrument was made by Lourdes Uncilla, Jose Miguel Moreno´s wife (the lute and guitar player of Spain). She does not teorbes actually, but Jose Miguel Moreno yes.I have the same instrument :) seek :
One can like or dislike him. In my view there are no doubts that Rolf Lislevand is one of the best lute players in the world today, and his live performance which I was lucky to see some time ago only proved this! But this recording seems to be pretty old - does anybody know how long ago it has been done?
Those of you who like Lislevand should check out his solo recordings "La Belle Homocide" (Gaultier, Dufaut, Gallot, Mouton, Bouquet, Mezangeau) and "Inatvolantura" (Bach).
I like very much of the Intavolatura [ Bach ]. Even recognizing that Nigel North´s playing is clear and vivid in Bach : Lute Music, from Amon Ra Records, I am truly addicted to Lislevand´s Intavolatura !!!
I enjoy it always, I listen to it everyday. Really, Lislevand is undoubtedly the most stylish and unique Lute and Theorbo player worldwide !!!
What's the point of hanging around youtube justto write comments like this smithy? You made your point, others can enjoy Lislevands playing without you writing this shit?
This is very fine playing. Just enough dynamic variation, a few rolled chords. This is more than de Visée wrote into the piece. If one is looking for great tonal variation then they should understand that the Theorbo is not a guitar and requires different technique. One needs to keep themselves fairly well anchored due to the many strings (note the pinky). Four or five fingers on six strings is quite different than on the same 11 or 13 courses.
Mr. Lislevand should know by his age that exact repetition of any idea is the true path to boredom. Repetition in music is there for a reason, that being, to offer the listener yet another way to express the same idea. This goes for repeated notes as much as repeated themes, as well as repeated phrases. Otherwise, there is no point. Is there? Yet, the real problem in this performance is the lack of an idea of what to do with the notes in the first place.
No! The one thing lower in life form is someone criticizing a person of whom he or she knows nothing. At least Smithsherman has the decency to focus his remarks on the performance, like it or not.
How can there be any other song aside from this one?

Four words- Rolf Lislevand's "Nuove Musiche"-
An album of Baroque music played in a modern production. for me it nothing short-of changed the way I listen and look for music.

Look for other albums under the ECM brand for similar sensibilites.
They do mostly jazz, but some classical, and everything in between.
