  • A fantastic number: comic and seductive at the same time. And as someone mentioned below, the real appeal is in the subtle transformation of librarian Shirley Jones, who spends most of the number resiting and being annoyed by)Preston (1:57), but becomes intrigued enough to start dancing at 5:39- and actually takes off her glasses like in the "sexy librarian" fantasy. Infectious, in its way.

  • I just noticed that she's wearing a bow tie in this scene. Awesome.

  • This is what West Side Story would have looked like if it took place in a library.

  • This is one of my favorite musical love it love this song ;]

  • i have seen the movie more than a girl my age should

  • i meant sad not sa

  • how sa is it to think that the majority of this cast is dead. :'(

  • i am making a fanfiction where the amestrian military has to preform music man. Roy is harold and riza is marian

  • @ Chaosfire360 TOO TRUE!!! I love Matthew Broderick, but I don't even want to SEE the remake...

  • Pure talent! Not like these stupid rap ones (step up etc.) these were the old GOOD musicals

  • Pure class!

  • i will never get tired of this song its soooo good

    Madam librar.....lain

  • @raquelcindyemily1234 i know right

  • I am not obsessed at all this is only my sixth comment on this video. Robert Preston was a beast. I am the ultimate music man fangirl

  • The books are so good looking. I want to dance in this library to express my adoration for BOOKS!

  • Guys cmon, quit arguing. We all know that whoever did the original movie would be better. If boderick had been in the old one u would've liked him better. U think u wouldn't, but u would

  • @theotherguy245689 Sorry but for me you are wrong i saw the matthew brodrick version first. Then i saw this one and compared to mathew preston wins. Matthew didn't have expression on his face.

  • I think I am probably half the views for this song

  • Ya gotta love hill

  • Oh I will never get tired of this song

  • had to play Harold Hill in my 6th grade School play... sadly we did it the way they shot the movie with Mathew Brodrick... i would have rather of done it this way

  • Musicals today don't come anywhere near touching this movie in any way.

  • Matthew sucked trying to be hill he was really bad. Robert was so awesome he was an Amazing actor.

Kristin was good just not as amazing as Shirley.

  • I live this musical sooo much especially this song me and my friend were singing it in class. I live the end

Harold: marshmallow * puts it in marian's mouth

    Marian: *spits it out*

    Harold: * kisses Marian*

Marian: * tries to slap Harold but he ducks and she slaps the guy going out with the mayor's oldest daughter*

Harold:* sings Marian's name and goes down the elevator thing*

  • She is so gorgeous. I am seriously in love with Shirley Jones.

  • this has been my favorite movie since i first saw it when i was 2 or 3 i'm 12 now.

  • mathew broderick sang it better even tho robert preston is the better actor #facts

  • @hinata750 I agree Broderick is prolly the best actor today for the part tho

  • "Marshmallow?"

    ">:O!!"

  • I know that Robert Preston is and always will be the very best Harold Hill ever, but seriously, Shirley Jones is brilliant as Marian! Her reactions to all of this feel authentically like she's a librarian (unlike Kristin Chenowenth, who you could tell was an actress). Of course, Jones was also brilliant in Oklahoma!.

  • My favorite musical of all time. Yes, Robert Preston IS Prof. Harold Hill!

  • I love this!

  • Robert Preston OWNED this role the way Rex Harrison owned Prof. Henry Higgins of "My Fair Lady." You simply cannot think of the role without thinking of the person.

  • I epically love this song :) my fav in the film

  • This has got to be one of the oddest dances on film. It's almost a geometry exercise. I love it.

  • @celtticnesses The other movie lacked the subtly of Marian's transition. In the new movie, Marian falls in love almost right away. In the classic film, you get the full bredth of Marian's journey to being in love. Marian isn't supposed to have chemestry with Harold in this scene. This is the better version by far. This is also my opinion. :-) Thanks for playing!

  • @marinegagnonsf but they do have chemistry in this version hahahaha and she's not like falling in love but she's absolutely felling something.

I think both versions are EXCELENT but they are a lot different. =))

    also my opinion =)

  • Poor Tommy... LOL!

  • Look at that waist!!!

  • Lol I LOVE Robert Preston!!!

  • I loved this movie , was a little kid and my grandma an I watched it, Loved it even since

  • true robert preston is the only music man and i just love his voice

  • Robert Preston is THE music man. Harold Hill can never really be played by anyone else. He's amazing.

  • I agree... Matthew Broderick just didn't do it for me. I have to point out, though.... Krisitn Chenoweth as Marian in the new version was a really good choice. She recreated the part perfectly. :D

  • @Chaosfire360 Dick Van Dyke did a rather fantastic job too tho....

  • Great musical and great song--Robert Preston was fantastic in this movie.

  • I absolutely love this number - the beat is great and the dance is fabulous - complete mayhem, romance and freedom! Absolutely one of my favorite muscial scenes from any movie!

  • I spent a lot of my childhood in "River City, Iowa" aka Mason City. ROFL

  • lol thats what i love about musicals

everyone can break into the same dance at exactly the same time

  • I love the beat of this song

  • The best musical ever in my estimation. I think it's so great. I saw it in play form twice, and the movie countless times. It never gets tiresome. Thanks for the post.

  • smooth hill, lol i loved the missed slap. Robert is better than all the actors.

  • Robert is such an amazing actor and singer

  • No it isn't better we did it in year 6 as our end of school production! The newer one is rubbish the older the better! The songs and characters are better in the old one! R.I.P Robert Preston A.K.A Harold Hill :-(

  • O.o Robert was much better than Matthew and Matthew is my favorite actor.

  • agreed. i love matthew but robert was a better harold hill. it's because matthew always plays innocent heroic roles and you believe robert as a salesman. matthew just can't play that type of guy

  • first comment! My music teacher assigned this song to me but I never heard so instead of watching the whole movie to hear it I searched it on youtube. But now I want to see the video. Good stuff.
