Amazing music that demonstrates how awesome can be the cultural mixtures. Breaking borders helping to break mental limits. And creation it's about that.
Closed minded individuals are the greatest threat to music. Tan Dun is a great composer, bringing fresh ideas to the table. Sorry if you don't like typical, you can be stuck 100 years ago.
The energy that one experiences with this Concerto is great. See the hall at the end, when the applause comes? It looks there are quite a few empty seats. It should be packed!
I think its inventive, improvisational and sensational. Who gives a damn what Mr. 309058659 says. Its definately not your classical piece but its also not a European piece or American style of music. Culturally if you don't understand the style then theres no point in commenting.
@LODragonJoe There is heavy european and american influence, just as their is chinese and tibetan. I dont think you can even hope to try to say this is one region's style of music; Its Tan Dun's. He definately doesn't write strictly chinese traditional music though, he mixes his humble chinese upbringings with his Glass and Cage influence when studying in America, with european style string orchestra. Theres always a point in commenting if you have something to say, even if I or you don't likeIt

I'm sorry, but this piece is crap. It is discordant and I don't care what kind of "deep" explanation you can provide for it, at the end of the day it sounds like crap. Any piece that forces talented musicians to yell "yao!" does not deserve to be performed at this level.
What does yelling yao have to do anything with being a talented musician? When you're a professional you use much more than an instrument in your hands. I guarentee you that the most prestigious musicians have made some sort of vocal contribution to a performance several times over. The whole "expressionlessly 'prik' musician" as you seem to be describing really is just a stereotype. As it may be, thats your opinion as lacking of knowledge as it may be.
I am so sorry you missed the beauty of this piece. Would you also have shouted down Stravinsky? Or derided Dvorak for his inclusion of folkloric themes.

The shouting adds another dimension to the music. The sololist is not just playing the instrument but also playing the part.

@bsaxagent also, shouting in a piece is nothing new; Bernstein did it as well. Look at Slava and his Concerto for Orchestra.

the whole piece is incredible, but the lead in at 4:50 followed by the chord that comes in after the vocalized "yao" is achingly beautiful.

All in all, I think the soloist is awesome. But I felt sad for her because Tan Dun made her kneel on a cushion to play for the entire concerto.
I wonder why.

@aqvaice
thats the way you play the Zheng. traditionally

@aqvaice Please don't feel sorry for her. This is how the traditional way of playing some of the Chinese traditional instruments so is the Japanese.

Why shouldn't an interesting piece as this be performed? Just because the musicians don't play in a "classical" way?
