idont see what all you ppl r complaining about .who cares if most ppl today hate/dont know/dont care about the Velvet Underground. you'd think they were called The Velvet UNDERGROUND for a reason after all :)..........
most of you kids were'nt even born then... i was 15 when this record came out it was not even heard of like jimi hendix no one heard of this kind of music there was bubble gum music and pop and motown even the doors were a strange lot of couse there was the vet nam war going on and you were( for or against) what was going on there were riots and protesters against the war and bands like mc5 and iggy pop and the stooges and stepping wolf and the grateful dead crosby nash and young santana
I love it when old fucks give us a rap about how we are too young for this music.. Im 20 years old and a musician, And I must say If it wasn't for the velvet underground I wouldn't be playing music.. no I wasn't even born yet when this came out , But it sure as hell this album gave me the same impression it did when it came out in 1967. So stop being such an old sad bastards who talk about "the good ol days" and how the youth only give a shit about the new wave of music. because im not one.
@deadboydansmith089 How about STEPPENwolf, old man? Yeah, we kids can know a thing or two about "your" music as well. Don't be so self-righteous. Do you think any of the musicians you named would have a problem with people liking their music? That's all we're doing.
I LOVE the first minute of this song...the rest of it...ehhh. I get it, but I would love to have that first minute looped. ^_^ And I'm wearing a Velvet Underground shirt, they are EPIC! These guys were very important to me growing up...an old lady now. I LOVE and respect this band. Still though, not my favorite by them.
I am baffled, because an old band I was in did, pretty much this for the last 5 minutes of a show we played... getting us boo'd off stage. I'm baffled because this sounds like and is pure gold.
Nobody's forcing anyone to like any style of music over any other style. Just realize that Madonna to Nirvana to Tribe Called Quest has recognized this band as an influence.
i can see how this is cool, its just not really my personal style of music. the only thing that annoys me is that if someone doesn't particularly like this style, all the people who do are like "OH ITS JUST CAUSE YOU'RE SEWWWW MAINSTREAM AND YOU DON'T GET IT". it's not that...there's a million different genres of music out there, not everyone's going to like the same thing. doesn't mean anyone's right or wrong.
most of you may not agree..i like good music ( beates, floyd, radiohead, etc...) but.... liking the part of this song where all those strange sounds appear is as of a snob as liking revolution 9
@KoRnhead12 me too, i hated them... but one day, i was angry, really angry, and i listened and i thought "holy crap, they are amazing!!" and now, is one of my favourite bands
The Velvet dedicated this song to the poet Delmore Schwartz, who was Reed's professor at Syracuse university. It is said that Schwartz told Lou Reed that music and voice didn't go well together, that's why the Velvet came up with "European son", an almost entirely instrumental piece (apart from from the few beginning lines). Anyway, great crazy piece of music/noise, with that scary bass-line played here by Cale and those itchy guitars that never stop, and that powerful ending.... what a trip!
One of the most influncial albums of all time. Its a shame The Velvet Underground still don't get the respect they deserve for what they did for rock n roll people left and right still can't understand the velvets or see their genius.
@Bonzo321 it really is a shame that people cant see their genius bonzo, now we have to accept the velvets have somewhat of a strange sound for the time, it took me some time to get used to them but when you find them.....its bliss PUNK OWS SO MUCH TO THE VELVET UNDERGROUND!

Wow. Isn't it funny I'm in that exact situation today. I try to play this for my friends who like whatever is mainstream, and they're always pissed off when I play this. Oh well I guess some people will never understand true music.
Holy shit, that sounds just like me! I know you wrote this a year ago, but, yeah—I finally figured out in eighth grade that I can't talk to anyone my age (17) about music because they don't understand. They don't know and they don't care, and I have never really liked any mainstream music. Not as much as this. They would always gave me strange looks and said stuff like, "What the fuck is that?!" Haha. :P
@cubyman23 i've given up playing challenging music to my mates, because they could challenge me with something i fucking hate,!"? it's just taste. unfortunately. SHITE has a strangle on culture, but that is just human, bloody nature
@cubyman23 Don't worry about it; just enjoy it. I get tired of people whining about this topic on artists such as this and why top 40 songs are horrible. We all know it already. Just enjoy the song
I don't get people that don't get this song. When I first heard it I was in heavenly bliss.

Sounds like a sped-up version of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd with more riffing and minus the keyboard. Really amazing!

First heard this in 1968 on an import into UK, with the peel-off banana skin on the cover, as you say.
Although the Velvets were never popular over here at the time, their music was revolutionary and their influence since has been enormous.
You can imagine the reaction I got when I played this track to friends who liked the Monkees.
