@MusicMango, June had a fantastic and very expressive voice. The "Baby SIster" album was finally remastered and issued on CD, BTW. It comes with GREAT liner notes. This said, I wouldn't necessarily say she had the most powerful voice of the group - it's the combination of their voices that made it so special. I always had a soft spot for Ruth, but hey, that's me. I love this song, it's vintage Pointer Sisters, it sounds like it could have been on the "So Excited" album (1982).
@Cicilo1983 Bonnie is actually my favorite of the sisters... but technically speaking, June had a larger vocal range than any of the other sisters. She could sing from first soprano down to contralto notes... none other the other sisters have her range. Richard Perry signed them on the strength of June's voice.
@MusicMango, you do have a point, it's nice to talk with a real PS fan! June had a great, powerful voice with a wide range. It's a bit revisionist, however, to say that Perry signed them on the strength of June's voice. He wanted them as a trio - otherwise, he would have simply signed June for a solo deal. The truth is, they were at their best together - I love some of the solo stuff from June and Anita, but it was nowhere near the powerful signature sound of their three voices soaring together.
@Cicilo1983 Yes, we are both clearly big fans... and I agree with you, June, Ruth and Anita...sound best together, a girl group that has a first soprano (June), mezzo soprano (Anita) and a contralto (Ruth) is the perfect balance.
@Cicilo1983 In 1978, when R. Perry was putting together a girl group for his new Planet label, he cut a demo with Anita, Ruth and another woman--- a gospel singer with a really loud voice (I forgot her name), but the sisters didn't like where it was going and didn't want to be in a group with her, so they convinced Perry to let June (who had since retired) audition--when he heard June he was blown away. June agreed to re-join the group under the condition that she would be given a solo album.

@Cicilo1983 i love your exchange of thoughts with @MusicMango........ i love your conversation. I learned more from your exchanges. I am a POinter sisters fan too and I agree with the both of you. I didnt know that R.Perry was forming a group in 1978 without June. Anita and Ruth were right to invite June again and insisted for her to rejoin them. I felt and saw that JUne really did carry the group, but then again Anita on the side was the one writing some of their hit songs at that time.
@Cicilo1983 .... Anita was always the quiet one and the more demure one, I do agree JUne was the one who had the star power. She was the one standing out on the group. Because of her aura and presence, June always was the one easily noticed. BUt Ruth was so humorous, I find her the life of the group and the one who is/was more opinionated, maybe because she is the oldest, i saw lots of their TV interviews and Ruth was funny, I like her. I also have a soft spot for ruth:) But then again.....
@Cicilo1983 .... I admire Anita. I'm more on the quiet one, the timid one :) It is true no other family member can replace JUne, no offense to Issa and SAdako. June will always be the star, the shining star in the group. BUt then again without Anita and Ruth, June's star would have never shine brightly. For me it really is/was give and take. Without each other, the Pointer sisters or the sisters can't achieve what they have achieved in/with their music careers.
June will forever be missed,i do. its like there will always be a missing piece in the group. BUt i am grateful for ANita and Ruth, they continued on. I am happy they still perform. I just hope they can totally patch things up with BOnnie, it is hard to know that they haven't fixed things with her, last 2009 there were videos of BOnnie singing with Anita and RUth, it was nice to see them together. JUne would have been smiling in heaven. I just learned that Bonnie is living ....
in a friend's tool shed, i just read it in the news just few weeks ago. So sad to learn about that. But then i guess there are some things that BOnnie had to fix within herself, her drug addiction problem for one, just like June is destroying her. What a pity. I pray for BOnnie.
TO ANita and Ruth always the best. I love you both and your family. THank you for the impact you made i my life.
cicilo and musicmango thank you.
correction: standing out "IN" the group............
@Selnitz, it's always nice to see that the Pointer Sisters still have many dedicated fans like you. They are the most criminallly underrated vocal groups of the pop era. Their albums are timeless, with the possible exceptions of "Serious Slamming" and "Right Rhythm" (I love those two albums, there are some brilliant tunes in there, but the production sounds dated today). Everything else that they have recorded is still as good as it ever was. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, anyone ?????
@Cicilo1983 yeah they deserve to be recognized more. its just a shame they werent received more positively or became more famous after their "break out" album, i dunno why. although contact did good in the airwaves because of Dare Me, still it was not the same after break out. i was hoping to get a copy of only sisters can do that, i read a review that that album was one of the best albums of the sisters. and their last with June :( ill forever love them. June see you in heaven :)
@Cicilo1983 Anita and Ruth, i hope you know millions of people stl follow you, your work and admire you both. we will forever support you in our hearts. :)
NOt just Rock and Roll HAll of FAme but a lifetime achievement award.......... or a Pulitzer Prize :D or a noble peace prize :D
I love New York at Christmas! Please come and watch the video for my song Christmas In New York on my page if you have time. Merry Christmas! Clara xxx
Grex, both this song and "Carol of the Bells" are on a CD "Smooth and Soulful Christmas" - I downloaded on iTunes (treat yourself). As I write the snow is fallin here in New York, and its just right!
Wow, what an incredibly great video! I never heard this before and just came across it. What great scenes of NYC. The girls are in great form as always!
I love the Pointer Sisters. The song was a little slow going at first, but it quickly grew on me. Nice to hear the Pointers again. I also agree that Issa is a nice fit, but nobody can truly replace June.
I agree. I miss June. Back on the pbs network the All Atlanta Chorus and Symphony invited the Pointer Sisters for a Gospel Christmas. I wished pbs allowed this broadcast for dvd or cd. (1994) To this date, that program was the best Christmas recording I ever heard. What Christmas is supposed to be. Amen...
I love the Pointer Sisters and I love this video. They have continued to be one of the best live shows money can buy. Issa, Ruth's daughter, now sings with Anita and Ruth. She is wonderful and is a perfect fit for June's replacement. We miss June (RIP), but Issa has only enhanced the sisters' performances.
Once again : what a great, uplifting Christmas song ! Who wrote this ? Is it a cover or did they write it themselves ?
