My 87 Cherokee rebuild is pretty dang nice. It a great little toy! A little noisy on the freeway with the leaky triangle window vents but its fun to drive every once in a while.
Love how it's blowing away a Blazer driving down the road, lol. They don't do that anymore these days dissing other auto makers in ads that I know of. lol
this was my first Jeep...1987 4.0...it had the power/comfort switch and had an "all-time 4 wheel drive" selection...blew the head gasket and sold it for 200$...dude fixed it and is still driving it...i miss it...has over 450,000 miles on it now
No commercials talked about emissions unless it is a fucking Prius, electric car or a PZEV!! That is just dumb!! Oh our 1986 Cherokee will totally pass smog. Duh!!
So if you dont drive a XJ fuck you ?? Seriously... How rude.. Jeep people dont act like this.... Or do they ? I have 2 Jeeps, both ZJ's both 1998, one is a 4.0 the other is a 5.9.. I never liked the ZJ's tho too ugly inside an out.., does that make me a bad person ?
There is something about an XJ that you can't describe. Everyone tells me they are just trucks. I say if you don't own a Jeep fuck you peeps. xD You know nothing
@braxsbayou I had two as a kid. Now I'm 16. I have a ZJ and I also want an XJ. Those XJs are the best. They never die and they just keep going. XJs RULE!
@DieselFreak94 XJ's are the best they're bulletproff! I always thought i wanted a ZJ or WJ till recently, and XJ's have SO many aftermarket parts. I'm 17 and have a camaro iroc-z and a grand prix, and i want to add an XJ to my car collection :P I am going to get one soon i am so excited! I just need to work a few months so i'll have enough money :P
I had a 93 and a 98. They both went past the 100,000 mile mark with no problems. Maybe I am blessed but I never had to do any repairs other then normal maintenance. They both got new brakes at about 60-70K miles and tuneup parts but that's it. No exhaust work, no transmission problems. Nothing.
OOPS, forgot. the 93 puked a heater hose but hey in 110K miles, that's no big deal.
Love it, I love my XJs have had an 87,88 and 94. until 97 Chrysler really didn't mess with the XJ's design or drivetrain much at all. and the 97 update was more due to the new federal passenger side airbag requirement than anything else. I know a good deal about Jeep and the XJ. IMO Chrysler stopped making true Jeeps with the most recent wrangler redesign and drop of the 4.0 inline 6
@DracoFumes couldn't agree more. The 3.7L is nothing more then a minivan motor. The inline 6 was one thing that really made a jeep a jeep, both on the outside and the inside.
I currently have a 2000 that is lifted and on 35" tires. I bought it because my mom wanted my first car to have airbags. Driving it daily is a little tough and I hope to soon pick up a 1990 from a guy in town.
I just think there the perfect vehicle: reliable, capable, and CHEAP
I have a 94 Chrysler Cherokee sport as well as the 88 AMC Jeep. And to see them side by side will show you the huge diff between the heavy duty build the 88 Jeep has vs the 99 Chrysler Sport. I am not saying Chrysler ruined the Jeep," Just skimped". imo. The drive train is so much better as well in the 88..
I do not know when Chrysler stopped making Jeeps. But why does Dodge sell them now?
@MrTwinsrule Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep are all part of the Same company. and I hate to burst your bubble, but in 1988, Jeep's were made by Chrysler, not AMC. Chrysler bought Jeep from AMC and Renault in 1987.
@moparsrock True Chrysler Purchased Jeep in 1987 however they did not muck around with AMC design and manufacturing until next model year. Infact Chrysler held the introduction of the Grand Cherokee for a few years while they completed the minivan design. This was a direct benifit to the Ford Explorer.
OH I guess then I got the wrong owners manual? I see no Chrysler or Dodge icons written on it, just AMC / Renault Wagoneer............................:)
The oil filter for the Chrysler engines will not work on the 88 jeep either.I guess I just do not know what I am talking about?
But for argument sake..........I will say your correct.........tongue in cheek!
@MrTwinsrule I discoverd this a few min ago..............In September 1997 all of AMC and Renault were renamed "Eagle". Yes! American Motors became the Jeep/Eagle division of Chrysler. Chrysler was obliged to buy parts from Renault for a couple of years and make cars out of them. So....We both are correct!
Chrysler made the 88 jeeps like you stated BUT out of AMC/Renault parts like I stated.
@moparsrock its funny u say that, my 1990 Cherokee has many AMC parts under the hood, radiator hoses, air box, theres also many other parts from other car manufactures on it, not to mention the fact that the registration says American as vehicle make
I love how they don't say a thing about emissions, safety, or fuel economy. That was back when SUVs were used for more than just driving to the grocery store and soccer practice.
@DietTimboSlice agree 100% man, the SUV as people like you and i knew it are dead...theyre now 'Crossovers' or plastic minivans with all wheel drive only...long live the XJ! and all SUV's representing this era!
