  • I love machining delrin, we do mostly stainless parts for the food industry but we do do some plastic delrin parts also, love it.

  • you can do it on pro E or solid works. I think you can get student versions for cheap

  • I'm likely to need to make some bushings for an office chair (Castelli) and Delrin is the likely material. To do this as CNC, is there some software that can take the basic measurements and "draw" the part - mine looks like an oval bushing.

  • @gregory891

You might try Google's Sketchup for drawing your part.

  • @gregory891 did you mean Derlin

  • i hate machining delrin. today i was making delrin parts and i almost passed out from the formaldahide fumes produced from it. first i got burning eyes, then my throat burned a little, then i almost went down for the count when i removed my shades and walked away from the machine. i was like wow, that came on strong and fast. so watch out for that i guess.

  • do you get any inconsistencies in the shape due to expansion/contraction caused by heat?

  • No warping that I could measure with my dial calipers.

Delrin is easy to machine as long as the tools are sharp. HSS works better than carbide on plastics like Delrin, nylon, Teflon, etc.

  • is this a fadal 4020 or 3016

  • Dynamechtronics DM4400M.

  • @CapriMikeC really, looks like its quite fast, what r the rapids, and max spindle rpm

  • Mill is approx 1994 model year. Rapids ~500ipm, spindle 10K rpm, Mitsubishi control. Not fast by modern measures but good for short production jobs.

  • How much does a machine like this cost?

  • This machine is a vertical machining center. New in 1995, it cost $45K, On Ebay today, it would sell for about $7K. There are less expensive CNC machines for hobbyist projects and huge machines that cost millions of $. I bought two of these machines for my machine shop business.

  • That's cool, thanks.

  • Thats awesome, how hard would delrin be to make in a mold from the resin. Would it be suitable for makin a bearing?

  • According to DuPont, delrin is moldable.

Google "DuPont Delrin Molding Guide" for technical info.

  • @cag66 I know your question was a while back but Delrin is used quite successfully at making anti backlash nuts on hobbyists cnc mills and such . They get great results and the nuts last a long time. Not sure about in a produciton enviroment. Melts or becomes moldable around 300-350 degrees.

  • what is Delrin? the stuff seems to splinter off like a magnet does when it breaks.

  • Delrin is a polyacetal thermo plastic plastic similar to Nylon and Teflon. Delrin is DuPont's trade name. It is made by other companies also but DuPont's name is the most recognized. It is available in other colors from black.

It cuts very easily. A sharp pocket knife can cut it. It is similar to the plastic cutting boards found in many kitchens.

  • GREAT QUESTION!

  • What are the pieces for?
