  • You are amazing AFP, I miss you and this is helping me get through today....thank you, lovely.

  • Holy shit.

    That is my professional opinion.

    Holy shit. Yes.

  • You know I ain't no Juliet

  • Amen

  • Kaleb i aint gonna die for you, you know i aint your juliet.

This stopped me from killing myself.

  • Amanda Palmer, I love you, your my biggest inspiration, i even got on my little's sister's account just to say that, I'm in a band and we might do a cover your song 'sing', i would do anything to sit at the piano with you for a minute, your a true artist!

  • @CoolCatElly I think her eyebrows are dead sexy,

  • @CoolCatElly haha, i thought the same when i first saw her but i find them beautifull now.

  • great song. the influences of ben folds are clearly hearable but not bad at all :)

btw are you wearing an anti-german shirt or do i get it wrong?

  • i pick those same flowers all the time :)

  • bravissima.

  • You are not the only one...I get really really f*cked up listening to her music, looking at her face, her stockings her shoes, listening to her words and piano playing....I f*cking LOVE Amanda F*cking Palmer!

  • This girl is f*cking awesome!. Is it ok to f*cked up just listening to her music all alone or am i just wrong?

  • I lisen to Miss Palmer and close my eyes and see her signing, cring, shivering, dancing, yelling, hidding, she pours her soul into her music and her soul is so tourn and putt togeather that it flows all emotions I love this about her

    THANK YOU MISS PALMER

  • I've only recently discovered the wonder of Amanda Palmer. I'm stunned. Her voice is breathtaking. It's not smooth and operatic. It's troubled and turbulent. It's not perfect, and that's shown me that true beauty lies inside imperfection. Thanks, Amanda.

  • A song so strikingly beautiful it sends chills down your spine and tears down your face every time.

  • i wish there was a "love" button.... ::sigh:: :)

  • i wish there was a "love" button.... ::sigh:: :)

  • This song is pure genius.

    (It's made of awesome.)

  • such a unique and beautiful song, like the artist herself.

  • To much Ben Folds in this song.

  • i love the song and i feel extremely stuoid for asking but what is an amperstand?

  • @flyingpigs96

it's the name for the & symbol.

I don't know why it's in the song, but could be a reference to relationships, marrying someone and forever being designated as a pair, 'Bob & Amanda', instead of as an individual.

But i really have no idea.

  • @packets1 Yes. That's what she's saying, she's not going to be the Amanda in the "X & Amanda" of a married couple.

  • @ExcaliburofLight Agreed, Scientology is pretty dumb.

    Okay, very dumb.

But both Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman are crazy creative people, and I'm not going to stop reading American God's or stop listening to Yes Virginia just beacuse of their (regrettably silly) religion, or atleast supposed religion.

  • @SocialAesthetics

As far as I know, some of Gaiman's family are scientologists but Gaiman has been out of the church, as it were, for years now. He can't exactly make a public statement about whether he is or not because it'd ruin any relationship with his parents if he said he wasn't and ruin any relationship with his fans if he said he was.

They both seem far too logical to be scientologists anyway.

  • im mesmerized.

  • amazing piano

  • I saw her show the other night in Toronto.

I mean, wow. She is even more Amazing in Person!

Wonderful person you are Amanda! You make me

laugh at the darkness in my life, thus so the darkness

does not take over! thank u.

  • No-one does ANYTHING as remotely CAPTIVATING as Amanda Palmer does..

  • Magical!!!

  • Lady gaga could only wish she played Pure Music like Amanda....

  • @Delthena She does, search for Brown Eyes, No Floods, Wonderful, Captivated and/or Electric Kiss. It's just not the sort of thing that gets big in the charts, unfortunately. Mainstream only likes pop.

  • @Delthena thats not fair, they are completely different.

  • i love you amanda

  • Amanda Palmer is inspired like a raving dada poet to melt plastic into wondrous spagetti contraptions that take suggest even more wondrous shapes. The human condition is human. Thanks, Amanda. You put Lady Gaga in the shade.

  • "ghetto boys are catcalling me I wonder if this method of courtship Has ever been effective Has any girl in history said Sure, you seem so nice, let's get it on Still, I always shock them when I answer Hi my name's Amanda"

    she is so right....mad world...

"I'm not gonna live my life on one side of an ampersand and even if I went with you I'm not the girl you think I am and I'm not gonna match you cause I'll lose my voice completely yeah I'm not gonna watch you ..."

    AMEN

  • 3:37... she looks like an evil mastermind

    i love her so much

  • Well...I think I found one of my favorite songs of...forever!

I love the broken power of her voice.

  • 'ampersand' is one of the greatest words music has taught me.

  • does anyone else think this is about bisexuality?

  • no...it is very clearly about not wanting to be dependend and/or marginalized and/or hindered and/or bossed around in relationships/in marriage...

  • @kathleenhannah it's a song not some formula nothing can be 'very clearly' meant ... but yes I can see how you think it could about not wanting to be marginilized in relationships ...

  • what does her t-shirt mean? (2:38)

  • @Sanushikuto "no Mayans"?

  • Amanda you are a role model

  • Pure Genius

  • Does anyone know what kind of piano she's playing? I'm caught between a Bechstein and a Steinway.

  • This song never fails to make me cry. So beautiful.

  • @joedaroo1

wait, what? I thought the religious approach to that issue was to pull the plug because keeping people alive on life support is "unnatural and against god" or something... or am I misinterpreting your comment?

  • i never noticed how long the song was. :D i guess i am so in love with this song, it doesnt matter

  • omfg i didnt noticed till u pointed it out lol

    such a fanfuckingtastic song!

  • hey, i didnt recognized that either...wow...anyway, this song could last forever

  • 'And though I am no use to them,

I do my part by simp-il-y smiling.'

  • oh i love this song, but she looks so scary in this video

  • Schnacker, you clearly fail at identifying good music. Minus 41 stars.

  • "I have wasted years of my life agonizing about the fire,

I started when i thought that to be strong you must be flame-retardant"

These are my favorite words in every song of all time.

  • Oh Amanda how I adore you. ♥

  • What's going on in the audio at the end, by the way?

  • Its the introduction to the next song "Runs In The Family". The entire CD runs like movie-type thing.

  • Actually Runs In The Family is before this song the next song is Leeds United

  • I've recently started listening to Amanda Palmer and the Dresden Dolls, all I can say is wow. (And this comes from a Minor Threat fan.)

  • Is anybody else always interested to see what eyebrows she'll have on?

  • Omigod I am seriously flipping out because for some reason my computer refuses to go past 2:42. I MUST watch the rest of the video...*hyperventilates a little*

  • I really don't like cults like scientology...

but guy...I DON'T CARE! beacause I LOVE amandas music! It makes me always happy!

and by the way...so many people are watching films with tom c., will smith or john travolta...

  • I suppose if Amanda Palmer is involved in Scientology I vaguely disapprove of it, but this kool-aid is delicious, and doesn't taste the least bit cult-ish to me. Same with Neil Gaiman's work.

  • It is very unclear from your post exactly who makes you sick, unless you're just referring to everyone here.

  • I'll drink Amanda's...and Neil's ...and Tori's koolaide ANYDAY! ALL of them are creative, intelligent artists and I for one am glad THEY AND THEIR ART EXIST B/C they bring much understanding and Beauty to this dreary, banal world! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR DEFENDING HER....Keep the Dreaming ALIVE and VIBRANT!

  • .and objectively..the faith I assume you probably believe (as with all western huge- organized religions who condition their followers to selfishly step in and preach complete insanity) has caused an expotential amount of greater suffering in the world...plz feel free to throw out more judgments so i can tear them apart, cause I'm just that much of a prick.

  • phh..omg..do I really need to step in to state the obvious?..Scientology who gives a flying flip-tit...like as though the world would seem less cruel if it didn't exist?..as if suffering and using people to promote their own gain would go away?..scientology is completely engorged by media (it is no threat or even worth a second glance)..

  • For everyone spouting off about Amanda and Neil being Scientologists...who really cares? I mean, come on, if she is or isn't really isn't anyone's business but hers. If you have a problem with her, that's your deal. And for the record, that money grubbing statement is complete bullshit and you know it. Are you an artist? Do you know how hard it is to make money being creative and pursuing what you love? Why don't you stop slamming her in the comments and get an actual hobby. Twat.

  • Oh for fuck's sake leave it alone! You want to call everyone insane, but you're the one commenting over and over about how they're cultists. GET A HOBBY AND GO OUTSIDE. Or better yet, I have some tin foil, you might need it to make a hat before the evil overlords read your thoughts.

  • You're the one that has subscibed to the Scientology channels. Says so on your profile, so before you attack people for being hypocrites, you might want to look in the mirror. You should go outside. Get a life. Seriously. Is this all you do? Spam videos? For fuck's sake.

  • Just one big point to make... Amanda Palmer's religious or political views may affect what she sings, sometimes, as far as what she is saying... but it has no bearing on her talent. She is incredible and he views didn't give her that... nor can they take it away.

  • I'm not a scientologist and I still listen to this. Music is something that can reach out to anyone. I really don't see how these people being scietologists matters.

  • Wow, ExcaliburofLight. What a waste of your lifetime. You desperately need a new hobby.

So says this full-time churchgoing Christian.

  • This song will always be my favorite, of all time.

I love this woman more than myself.

  • Amazing!

    BRAVO!!!!

  • Im learning this song but ill never master it like her! shes so breathe-takingly awesome

  • Wow...simply, wow...

  • pause at 3:42.

I think she's beautiful in a unique way.

    What a song!

Nothing is awesome enough to describe this. Wow. Just wow.

She never ceases to amaze me.

  • I just hear this on Pandora for the first time. I knew who Amanda Palmer was and everything, but this song caught my attention when I wasn't even paying attention to my computer. I had to log on You tube and post this comment. Sure I might have just got home from a party drunk so I'm typing this up... but regardless she deserves the credit. The lyrics are beautiful.

  • You have incredibly English when your drunk...When I'm drunk I have to try really hard to hit the right keys...haha

  • Correction to ExcaliburofLight- Neil Gaiman's parents were Scientologists. Scientology has a 'Fair Game' policy on anyone who speaks out against it- including haressing family members. Can you see the difficulty he might have in life if he made any comment on the cult? Amanda has insinuated many times that she has no religion at all. I'm bored of the people on Youtube who decide to have a go at people they've never met for no good reason. I met them and they were lovely. You're clearly aren't.

  • AFP, side boobage and all! Just kidding (sort of) this is probably my favorite song off the album.

  • I always thought this song was about marriage: Mr. & Mrs.

  • Not even strictly about marriage, but about being defined by that ampersand, by the link.

  • So....the scientologists killed amanda palmer?

  • Why must you waste your time? Go and do something productive.

  • Comment removed

  • Except that Amanda Palmer isn't a Scientologist. I'm on my period. Your argument is invalid.

  • Actually Amanda Palmer was not dumped from her record company.. she asked for them to drop her since all they care about is money money money!!! and she is actually a very gifted singer songwriter compared to many singers now! :D

  • I think that AFP is awesome. She's so 3030.

  • This is a beautiful song, but it's bittersweet for me.

Because I miss a girl who won't live her life on one side of an ampersand, which is alright, and I don't want her to be my Juliet. I simply wish I hadn't destroyed the friendship by burning myself to death, baby.

  • I know how you feel, its been 6 months since I seen the girl who I felt that for and still to this day, even though Im seeing someone else, I know Ill always love her, I just wish she could be there for me when I went through the dark times, she always knew how to brng me back to reality

  • I love her eyebrows. Now thats art!

  • @dmroellig art really?

  • Reminds me of my older sister, not a lover. She left home years ago, and hasn't contacted me. Got really involved with dangerous drugs, and finally one day I just said fuck it. I'm not going to sit around crying and writing emotional, worried letters to someone who abandoned me without looking back. She can go live whatever life she wants, while I prove to the people who compare me to her that I'm different, that I can do something with my life.

  • good for you. that's a healthy choice.

  • she should write a musical. that would be an epic.

  • wow i can imagine it! it would be awesome!

she doesnt read music or anything tho does she... dam.

  • With the Needle that Sings in Her Heart.

  • I concur

  • Actually, I heard she helped some high school turn Neutral Milk Hotel's album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" into a musical.

  • dude, are you serious!?!?!

  • Aww...I just got a tattoo of an Ampersand, so this song hits home. =) But not the & kind. The other ampersand.

  • I'm trying to find out what this other kind is...and I'm having no luck.

So, would you mind filling me in?

  • the treble clef maybe? lol

  • treble clef?

  • the only girl in the world i would do anything for.

loooooooooooove her & that song & thee whole album & the dresden dolls. just can't stop listenning. & ♥

  • Ampersand = &

  • &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

  • 'I do my part by simply smiling.'

  • tiene una voz increible me encanta como se viste y todo su estilooooo es lejos la mejor!

  • soy de chile la escuho hace un tiempo me encanta sobretodo este tema!!!!!!!!!

  • I fucking love the way she's dressed

  • i love this part 3:31-4:07

    she's my favorite singer sng-writer

i love her and youre beautiful voice

    she's the best!

  • let's get it on.

  • So beautiful. It completely reminds me of my ex bf; she put my experiences to wonderful music. So I'm very grateful for this song, it makes me feel not so alone in everything and gives me some hope

  • great singer

  • Amanda Palmer-

    YOU ARE AMAZING.

  • This is one of my faves. All of her songs are so thought-provoking. There's really no way for me to describe them perfectly D:

  • eske esa amanda si esta chida :p

  • eres un pendejo!!! amanda es lo mejorrrrrr

por su talentoo no es xq este chidaaa

    BAJO!

  • PERO APOCO NO TE LA COGIAS MIJO!

  • One of my favs too... All the interpretations here ring true to me, but one that I don't see here is the strongest for me:

It reminds me of a dysfunctional and co-dependent relationship. The "Headstones all ready..." bridge and other lines speak strongly to me of one person who wants that kind of relationship and another (the singer) who realizes (or has realized recently) that this is not helathy and will drag her down if it doesn't stop. "I'm not gonna die for you... I ain't no Juliet".

  • And also the lines, "I'm not gonna match you 'cuz I'd lose my voice completely", "Im not gonna watch you burn yourself out completely", "I'm not gonna watch (stop) you 'cuz I'm not the one that's crazy".

The lyrics seem to say she spent years of her life in these relationships, but she's not that person anymore (if she ever was). While the romatic ideal of co-dependency is sweet, it's not healthy and she won't go that far anymore - won't be one half of an Ampersand, and won't be burnt again.

  • What a great interpretation to the song. I had been sitting here listening to it and trying to figure, in my opinion, what it was she meant with the song and yours hits home better than any other I have read.

  • Thank you so much!

I listen to this song over and over too - this and Astronaut. Two of my favs.

I've read since on one of Amanda's sites - tho I don't recall which - that she was once in a relationship with a heroine addict and this song and Astronaut are directly influenced by that relationship.

This whole album speaks so much to me. She says so beautifully what I cannot. She makes me laugh and cry at once, it's been a long time since an artist did that. I just love her!

  • Possibly The Point of It All as well, don't you think? She focuses alot on the 'needle' in that song, and someone letting life go by without them.

  • so amazing. wow.

  • It's nice to see this vid put back up. :^D

  • Sheer brilliance.

  • this is hands down my fave song... was a tuff decision, but one I'm proud of...

  • This is my favorite, no it's not.. it is... ahhh too hard to decide.

  • i love her

    i know

    you do, too

    fuck you

    she's mine

  • There needs to be more comments.

  • Everybody's just left speechless. ;-)

  • So true- all the songs ring true for me. My life really sucks atm. all i have as a woman is my career (that i have fought for and still studying for) and a 16 yr old son. its a strange existence. music is the only salve that works. love fucks me up more

  • everyone of her songs. simply amazing. rings so true

  • Your son has to be proud that his mother has such an awesome taste of music :)

Amanda Palmer is a great example for us all: to express yourself in such beautiful way, that will always be a dream of me...

  • Ampersand is my favourite track from the album. Definitely.

  • How could I have not heard of her sooner?!

    <3

  • From her hands (most beautiful hands ever), her hair, her cloths, her body to the music, the lyrics and the drawing just one word to resume: ART.

The most pure and perfect art I've ever seen...

    I just love Amanda Palmer.

    Ornella from Argentina.

  • All in all awesome song and has helped me realise that my life can go on following the death of my wife, that I can still live as my own person and forge on without having her as my other half.

  • Thank you for putting your view of the song out there. I really like your interpretation. It makes me re-look at the song adn lyrics. I will have to ponder this further.

    Thanks again.

  • This is my favorite song ever sung by amanda... it is amazing. and it doesn't seem to me a "lonely" song, more like coming out and saying "Hey, i don't need you to be happy! I'm amanda fucking palmer for god's sake!"

  • Ur-moment.

  • That's so cool when she lies down and she looks like she's part of the painting!

    Go Amanda Palmer!!!

  • I've never been impacted by a song so much. This is truly amazing. I feel like my stomach is in my throat. It so flawless.

I can't stop listening to it.

    AMAZING!

Amanda, I'm going to meet you one day, and probably cry.

    :D

  • I agree with you guys on the meaning of the song, but I think there is more to it. It's almost like it's on a specific relationship. and then when she declares she wont be confined by their relationship, he burns down her block, but stops once it reaches her house cause he changes his mind... This is just what I got though.

  • I think that is a bit too literal. The fire is just a fire. It is a device to show the randomness and irony in the world. 'He' had said that if he couldn't have her he would rather die but the fire is on her block and "ironically" the fire stops at her apartment.

  • I take the reference to fires to be a continuation about the line where she refers to the fires she started when she was young, when she thought to be strong was to be fire retardant. As she's grown older she's realised that (and i apologise for the blatant generalisation) the young girls dream of meeting the perfect man and living happily ever after isn't relative any more. It's no longer relevant in her life and so the fire just burnt out when it reached her. Back that up with the line
