@jockstick Actually sir thats not exactly true, although granted it is pretty much what makes the filter a filter. You can have as much media as you want but if you have a poor design that allows more flow-by, too much flow, too little flow, or even poor position in the filter can make that extra media irrelevant. Although in the specific case of the AC's it has more to do with flow-by (they allow more) and not to mention the C series has some nice other features. Either way you cant go wrong.
Hey just interested in your opinion, I am putting my red ear slider in a 30 gallon tank for the time being, what do you think would be the best filter to use for her, shes not as dirty as most turtles seem to be but im just unsure, right now the c4 is looking pretty good to me.
Can you please just do a review on the fluval c cause im thinking of getting one but i wanna see a more in depth review . Like givr more info on the compartments. And by the way i love your videos all other videos dont have good info but yours does. Thanks
@poseidon2327 Well as I mention in the videos, I cant do a real review on it yet. I need to use and abuse it and subject it to other testing, before I do a fair review.
Michael, your videos are the most useful aquarium information on YouTube. About the C4, I've been using an Aquaclear 110 while I troubleshoot my G3. I'm actually liking the more straightforward design (this is my first HOB) and I might just punt on canisters. Any word on when/if there's going to be a C5?
@BlackRedAlex That would do it just fine, Id go with a C4 though. Really Id be good to put a supplemental filter in there too. Like maybe an AC30 or some other small power filter or sponge filter.
Good Video. Although I'm left with some question's I'm hoping you can answer.
So forth, how does the filter compare in terms of mechanical filtration?
How is the noise level from the added trickle chamber?
Does the entire trickle pad get soaked or is it just that one area where the trickle comes out?
I'll probably be pairing one of these up with my Emperor 400's and to replace the worn out AC70 on my 60 gallon currently. I have a feeling the Emp/Fluval C4 duo will work out quite nicely!
@starcraftluver62 Like I said its up to you depending how your tank is going to be setup. If I was doing Discus, since I would need a rather large to medium sized tank (75G and up) Go with both. Even with a 75G just slap a AquaClear 110 and a Fluval C4 and you will have more than enough. Its always good to have more though. If not just go with a canister, I like to, on my tanks, go with a canister, and at least one HOB filter.
@starcraftluver62 Well it was my new toy lol. It really depends upon your use, the aquaclear has more options in terms of customization, and does have a better surface area for beneficial bacteria. At the same time, the aquaclear has much more flow by than the Fluval C. So the C will be better at water polishing, as well as due to the drip chamber, will be able to get rid of nitrates to a degree. Id use the aquaclear for bigger tanks that dont need water polishing and vise versa.
@starcraftluver62 Yea why not? Theres no reason you shouldnt, I do that for sure. If you didnt know, I mention this in the video but Fluval and AquaClear are both made by the same company which is Rolf C. Hagen Inc.
@AquariumTech im thinking about getting a new tank for my flowerhorn since it outgrown his and so i might be using a powerfiter. do you know what would be a good size tank?
can anyone help me?...I just got into the hobbie and got a 75 gallon tank as my first aquarium, I got it free from a friend. My tank is in my room right near my bed, what is the quietest filter I can get for a 75 gallon?
@shutdownthefed Well that kind of depends and is some what of an open ended question. FIrst off do you have any idea what type of filter you would like to get (I.E. power hang on back, canister, internal, and etc.) Most filters are going to be quiet enough so you dont hear them anyways, but as a personal suggestion if your only looking for quietness, internal filters like the fluval U series, I have a video posted about them. Really though a canister would be a better choice overall.
@AquariumTech thanks for the info, I would be getting a hang on filter the better ones are too much for me right now. As far as the fish, I'm not really sure yet...I want an electric blue crawfish but I think it will kill everything else I put in there
@protocl Even if it is designed for a specific purpose doesnt mean its the best for that. Anyways, when it comes to fluval, they only have 3 canister filters series, the 05 series, the fx5, and the G series. So you kind of can do some generalizing. The 05 series is made for most tanks, then the fx5 is for bigger tanks, and of course the G series, is for those who like the best. So for the most part it is dictated by tank size.
@protocl Also as for the price, load, and technology, I honestly found the Fluvals better in pretty much every category. Its not like I dont like eheim I used to have a bunch of their units. I have also tested them side by side, I know this is a huge debate for a lot of people so theres really no reason to go any further, but I have consistently seen better results from the fluval. Specifically the G and 05 series as compared to an eheim classics and professionals.
@protocl Anyways I never really looked to see why but that would make a good story/videos. Anyways I might do videos on eheim vs fluval in the future since this is such a debated topic. I have no reason not to be fair, im not getting paid by anyone and want only the best for fish. Anyways I think lets just leave it at that because there is opinion and usage that comes into consideration. This really is not the proper place to discus the topic anyhow, this video has nothing to do with canisters.
@protocl Used to have almost all Eheims, not that they are bad filters, but switched to Fluval and never looked back. Much happier with Fluval, but I dont think Ive ever seen an Eheim Hang On Back filter, which is what this video is pertaining to.
I actually run one of each on my piranha tank. :-) both are fine units. In my opinion, the aquaclear is a better choice for bulk media. I put a thin strip of filter floss over the sponge & then three purigen pouches on top of that. The C4 gets the leftover bio-media in the trickle chamber & micron mesh & pre-cut phosphate & carbon pads.
@SubieSleeper Thank you, yes they are both fine filters, that was something I kind of forgot to mention, I think I might have put it in a different video. That the AquaClear is a more versatile platform that modifications are easier to do on.

u do realize aquaclear has a higher filter media capacity....which is pretty much the most important aspect of a filter

Would the aquaclear 70 be ideal for a 29 gal tank that will only house one Congo puffer; with no other fish, just one? Thank you.

A specific brand or type cannot be generalized.
As for the price, sophistication and bioload of that unit, an eheim classic suffice.
Sorry for the spamming, below.
