@ProStreet83C10 until the engine temperature reaches 175F, if you have a fooler built into the ECT gauge you can have it high idle on 3 cylinder indefinitely.
@66cooldued cummins could withstand that i have the same year as his leave it oput for couple of days in snow -20s thing starts up like it was just running
@66cooldued if you didnt have any heaters at all and left your truck off for extended periods of time in -58F. would your fuel tank just be one big blob of jello???
started up my 98 24valve in -40 first start without being plugged in. never thought it would do it cuase i had a 7.3 powerstroke that wouldnt start at -13. lovin the cummins
@motorwolrdpl midway through the year they made some subtle body changes (removed some plastic molding/cladding) and changed the rear axle to disc brakes from drum brakes.
@ProStreet83C10 i live in the south so i don't think i've ever started mine under 15 deg. i've never heard mine do a 3 cyl. high idle......is that what the blinking light on the console is showing?
i have an 01 cummins witha 48 and ive done 3 trans in two years. when i finally did ats co pilot and ats convertor and valve body, billit shafts. well than i had no more problems. i dont drive my truck in the snow or salt but i start in in negative weather and i havnt had it do that yet
idn know were your info on the 48re has come from.. i can complain because i have one myself..on the back of my cummins but the 48re has a 1-2-1-2 shift problem that heats up the front pump,, and are very weak in general... any type of programmer on your cummins will wear out a stock 48re in no time ... breaks input and output shafts,,, burn up discs an start to slip.. all kinds of problems.. but lets face it ... bought it for the cummins!!! build a trans ,, and never have a problem again
The 3rd Gen auto tranny (48RE) behind the Cummins is proven and easily as strong or stronger than the Chevy or Ford versions of the same time period. You're living in the past mate. The newer Dodge trannies are stout and just as reliable as the others any day of the week. Ford probably has the weakest tranny of the bunch today though the Ally has it's own problems too.
the alison is basically bulletproof, love that tranny. the dodge's is strong for what it is, no complaints here. ford cant build anytign right these days, damn i miss that 7.3
@rrose862005 I agree about the trans. Everyone I know has problems. I didn't have a single problem with my 98 cummins until i 195,500 miles so they arnt necessarily all shit
@KyleTucker1209 Absolutely, same here. My father didn't have a problem with his 97's (With Cummins) transmission til about 180,000 miles. The tranny did well granted the payload of the tool box, which was very heavy, and fire equipment it had in the back; plus the trailer it pulled with our boat.
i live in canada...up north it gets down to - 35-40 below with wind chills up to -40 so try starting a cummins in that weather...let it sit for a hole night...temps get to -55 lol thats over night so next time try double digts LOL
My '06 Dodge Cummins lives in Northern Ontario, Canada and can sit for days on end in temps of -35 and she fires right up nearly like it's summer. Never had a problem even when most every other type of vehicle or machine will not start. Mine doesn't have the 3 cylinder idle ... Dodge stopped using that when the 3rd Gens came out.
Shutting down the 3 other cylinders puts more strain on the engine (as the 3 "dead" cylinders are still filling and compressing air, but no ignition) and helps it warm up faster.
I think this was already covered earlier, but a large diesel won't produce any heat on idle: thus a "fast idle" or running it on three cyls gives the engine something to work on. There's just no fuel coming in from the injectors, but the three idle cyls ar of course fully lubricated.
did he really think it wouldnt start? its a cummins ofcourse it will start. ya the allison would be a good tranny for the dodge. cummins is by far the best diesel motor it and cat.
I have a cummins, but as I see it, Dodge does not build the engine. It was built FOR dodge but by another company, Cummins right? Soo... that means its just a Dodge with all its issues, tranny, injector pump etc with a really good engine. Isn't the 5.9 engine, in its same version used for tractors and stuff?? If so, then its basically just adapted to fit the Dodge truck. Don't get me wrong, I love my Cummins but I wish Dodge would have had someone else build them a tranny if they couldn't do it.
The allison automatic would have been the best automatic transmission if chevy would not have took it. but, the best transmission, is the 6 speed manual.
With the stock configuration it goes into 3 cyl?? I plug mine in during winter nights, I'd let it warm up a little bit before I headed to work. But I never heard it go into 3 cyl.
My 1998 Toyota Hiace van, 2.446 l 4-cyl diesel, 5W40 oil, two 60Ah batteries, winter diesel in the tank of course, stood undriven at my country house driveway in -26 C for two days. Gave her two rounds of glow plugs and started up. Power steering was a bit stiff, so was the manual gearbox, but off we went. Just another normal winter day here in Finland. No magic needed, just look after your vehicle and she will serve well. (Forget all starter spray shit!)
I hate Chrysler Corp's cars, but boy can they build a truck. Only brand that uses a Cummins straight 6, and beats the hell out of the V8 diesels from Ford and GM, they can learn a thing or two from Dodge.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ya they sure can like how to build a tranny tht needs to b replaced every 3000 miles how to go outta bussiness ya dodge great company doubt.... my stroker beats the farm truck wit the "godly" 5.9 cummins anyday......to b cummin u gotta b stroken and stroken lasts alot longer
I only like the dodge Devision of chrusler, and only a few cars from that Devision. Love all the trucks, as well as the charger and the callenger, and they all use the same Hemi as the Ram 1500. Other than that, their cars arent great in my eyes.
@licpl8man Chrysler don't make the motor in the Dodge, Cummins does. The only thing I would even compare the Cummins to is the the 7.3L PSD. That's just my opion though.
camera was inside until i took it out....the Cummins Diesels are 5.9L Inline 6 cyl engines, if you would ave read previous comments, youd see it mentioned many times
Whats great about the inline 6's is that they run just as good if not better than most of the V8 diesels, so Dodge can get away with a smaller more fuel efficient engine that produces just as much power as the big V8's. The major difference is that the power band is different on the I6 vs the V8. The V8 you have to rev the nuts off, the I6 likes lower RPM's.
My 2002 Cummins 5.9L, 24V Starts very well unplugged until -15°Celsius, below its a little difficult.
We had -40 °C / -40°F in January this Year, the engine worked perfect (block heated), only the fucking electronics had some problems like: bling bling bling, ding ding ding, check this and that...

fascinating how rednecks love posting videos of their diesel starting in cold weather, like its some crazy phenomenon. oakies are amazed by the simplest things.....
uhh yea listen to they guy in the video. speak like normal americans please.....no one on tv or media in general sounds like you white trash....yall get back naaw ya heaa!!
you must love larry the cable guy and drive a truck. NASCAR IS RETARDED!!! give some southerners a oval track and a v8, they think theyre fuckin world class athletes......oh, a left turn coming up...and another left turn...and another left turn....usa at its worst.....
15 deg or colder, and that has to be the temp. of the motor, once the truck has been driven and the motor is warm it will not activate until the next morning.
ya, but anything other than banks will kill your engine. this guy i know put an edge module on his dodge, and went through 3 transmissions, and since i never see it anymore, im assuming he cracked the block on the motor. idiot.
well, all im sayin is if i had a diesel, i wouldn't put anything but banks on it. mostly because i dont want to risk having to replace a $7,500+ motor
thats fine but MANY of the programmers, tuners, etc. out today have built in defuel parameters as well as safety features so you wont melt down your engine.
I am a Ford guy, but those 5.9's can take a LOOOOOOTTTTTT of abuse and horsepower before you need to start worrying about upgrading any of the internal components.
The 3cyl high idle is great, I have it on my truck. You don't have to get it flashed from the factory though, all you have to do is borrow a Smarty tuner from someone, upload it, and then put it back to stock. This activates it permanetly on any of the dodges even after the smarty is gone. Smarty is a great tuner to.
yeah i know. Ive tried a smarty on my truck in the past, but had the dealer activate these before i had tried the smarty programmer. Smarty + Edge = Smokey as hell and VERY hot exhaust gas temps!!! I saw 1450 deg within SECONDS with them stacked.
it does that by shutting off fuel to 3 cylinders so it makes the engine work harder thus creating more heat and warming up the engine quicker. The high idle/3 cyl high idle is enabled by Chrysler's DRB III scan tool. How it works is easy, if the temperature is below 32 deg. and the engine is at ambient air temp it ramps up to the 1200 RPM high idle, If the ambient temperature is 15 deg F or lower, it ramps up to 1200 RPM and then cuts fuel to 3 of the 6 cylinders thus aiding in engine warm up.
They are both a dealer activated item....the trucks (old style 98-02 2nd Gen) do NOT come with either option installed. HOWEVER the newer 03-08 may either come with thae high idle option OR they may be able to be activated by turning on the cruise control and sitting set above 1200 RPM then using the accel button to raise it from there.
I like those Cummins from those years until 2002.

But here we KAMAZ trucks at a temperature not run.
We just have -25с degrees (in Siberia), as for you -45 (USA). Climate, or rather humidity is another
I have a "Canadian" Isuzu Trooper with a gasoline engine. He does not want to start at - 35С degrees :(
Bighorn with a diesel engine, the same start problem.
I dream of RAM. And your video is it gives hope that Cummins Dodge will be able to work in Siberia :)

I love the 5.9L Cummins! So awesome!
OneBadChevy99 3 years ago
so does a cummins put it on 3 cyl but it self and how cold does it have to be
xxxxrockerdudexxxx 3 years ago
15 deg or colder, and that has to be the temp. of the motor, once the truck has been driven and the motor is warm it will not activate until the next morning.
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
-5 wow thats cold..............
jdmtv140 3 years ago
that really cant be good for ur engine...
coleissosexy 3 years ago
already explained it but its works the engine harder by cutting off fuel to 3 of the 6 cylinders and thus aiding in engine warmup
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
whats 3 cyl high idle? how do u put it in high idle and why on 3 cyl?
whyzee125 3 years ago
youll like edge or quadzilla a TON better than banks.....all you get with banks is the name and a lil hp
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
ya, but anything other than banks will kill your engine. this guy i know put an edge module on his dodge, and went through 3 transmissions, and since i never see it anymore, im assuming he cracked the block on the motor. idiot.
djjerky454 3 years ago
i beg to differ there bud....
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
well, all im sayin is if i had a diesel, i wouldn't put anything but banks on it. mostly because i dont want to risk having to replace a $7,500+ motor
djjerky454 3 years ago
thats fine but MANY of the programmers, tuners, etc. out today have built in defuel parameters as well as safety features so you wont melt down your engine.
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
I am a Ford guy, but those 5.9's can take a LOOOOOOTTTTTT of abuse and horsepower before you need to start worrying about upgrading any of the internal components.
jizzmonger 3 years ago
hey einstein dodges go through transmissions like water anyway and adding horsepower from any tuner isnt gonna help the cause.
kx250ltr450 3 years ago
Yeah well i have the heaviest duty MANUAL transmission available on the light duty truck market so you can put your foot where your mouth is!
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
HAHA I agree with you 100%. kx250ltr450 didn't respond to that now did he. HAHA Love my Dodge/CUMMINS
nflesher 3 years ago
Ive got the 3cyl high idle on my ram 3500 cummins love also, also got banks six gun power love it also
farmmo4ever 3 years ago
The 3cyl high idle is great, I have it on my truck. You don't have to get it flashed from the factory though, all you have to do is borrow a Smarty tuner from someone, upload it, and then put it back to stock. This activates it permanetly on any of the dodges even after the smarty is gone. Smarty is a great tuner to.
BADAMS1005 3 years ago
yeah i know. Ive tried a smarty on my truck in the past, but had the dealer activate these before i had tried the smarty programmer. Smarty + Edge = Smokey as hell and VERY hot exhaust gas temps!!! I saw 1450 deg within SECONDS with them stacked.
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
That's a Long-Ass Wait To Start, lmao. Awesome 3-cyl. high idle.
mitsumivec4life 3 years ago

ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
it does that by shutting off fuel to 3 cylinders so it makes the engine work harder thus creating more heat and warming up the engine quicker.
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
my yard tractor is 2 cyl and i shut off 1 ciyl it soiuunds awesome!
s172mch 3 years ago
so a stock cummins would do the high idle at 1200 rpm at 6 cylinders correct??
and the 3 cylinder would be a dealer flash if you wanted it correct??
up in canada where i live its -40 celcius all winter so high idle is a must for me
gooddriver22 3 years ago
They are both a dealer activated item....the trucks (old style 98-02 2nd Gen) do NOT come with either option installed. HOWEVER the newer 03-08 may either come with thae high idle option OR they may be able to be activated by turning on the cruise control and sitting set above 1200 RPM then using the accel button to raise it from there.
ProStreet83C10 3 years ago
How did you get it to idle on 3 cylinders?
DanielJaegerFilms 3 years ago
its a mod that the dealer can do they have to enable it
also some tuners have it
s172mch 3 years ago
Cool! are there any advantages with doing this? fuel savings perhaps?
DanielJaegerFilms 3 years ago
not really
no fuel savings but if ur in a little hurry u get it warmed up to safe temp to drive
its a cool feature
if u have the high idle mod, it looks like u have a big rig lol cuz most 18 wheelers have high idle
s172mch 3 years ago
That's cool that it warms up faster with only three cylinders, how does it do that?
DanielJaegerFilms 3 years ago
