Hans Landa is such a dorky guy but at the same time he's downright terrifying. This is the perfect antagonist for this kind of movie.

The Italian language scene was amazing...everyone likes it for Pitt's southern accent, but what makes that scene especially great - and this often goes unnoticed - is how the Landa character makes each American repeat themselves, letting them know subtly that their cover is blown and how he does it by just fucking with them by judging their accents. I was in stitches watching it the first time b/c of Pitt like everyone else, but as I've rewatched it, I've appreciated it more.

This is what makes Landa one of the best villains in movie history regardless of whether you like Tarantino as a director or not; his casual playfulness and charm at moments like this just set him aside from other villains who rely mostly on menace or overt badassery (technical term there :P)

As much as I'm always entertained by the likes of Mr Blonde, Bill and Stuntman Mike, those Tarantino bad guys are probably made too much to try and seem cool, whereas Landa is cool because of his qualities and like you say, playfulness and charm! He is simply unforgettable like Hannibal Lector and certain other classic villains, and if Tarantino movies were more than just a cult following, he would probably be a household name!
