So so so pleasantly surprised,i must say i can truly relate to Ben's solo project,it's a lot more rock'n'roll than i expected, that's why i like it.Sorry,Brandon,Mike :) still love Incubus
Ho. Ly. Shit...never heard his solo stuff before, incredible! I love it! :D and of course I'm comparing it Incubus, but who hasn't? :P For solo, it's incredible, but when he comes together with Mike's genius guitar writing, followed by Jose's smooth and groovin' drums and Brandon's unbelievable vocals, it's just a force that is surprisingly containable, but barely! But I love this, this is awesome, must get the whole album! :)
geez you are all bunch of fucking nerds go search a brazilian band called Restart and listen to their song called 'recomeçar', you will see whats gay and who fucking sucks(and fucking kill the rock n roll), but not Ben Kenney he is fucking awesome and a godamn genius, better than anyone here i can only assume, cuz you waste time here for bullshit comments like these?
its pretty crazy that one man can out perform his whole band on there own instruments. not sayin incubus sucks i love incubus with the passion.
but as far as shreddin solos bens got mike beat on guitar
i kno he can out drum jose
his voice is right up there with brandons.....he doesnt have brandon beat though...bb is able to hit ridiculous high notes that ben couldnt imagine pullin off.
and ive notice ben's voice goes out easy.
only guy ben cant truly outperform is kilmore lmao
I'd say Jose is a much better drummer than Ben is. Listen to a song with a cool drum beat such as Nowhere Fast or Pardon Me and you'll see what I mean. Not ever saying that Ben is bad (in fact he is ridiculously awesome), I'm just saying that Jose is more refined in the art of drums.
@HLGHandlez he may be able to do these things, but i hardly believe ge could outperform jose and einziger, those two are extremely talented musicians. They could definitely play these, easily. Einziger doesn;t play solos like that because the majority of the time it would not fit in with the style that most Incubus songs have. It's about musicality.
>>i hardly believe ge could outperform jose and einziger,
>>those two are extremely talented musicians. They could
>>definitely play these, easily.
'
Oh definitely they could play these songs. There's no way Ben is better than either of them on their instruments. It's awesome that he can play everything as well as he does, but bass is definitely his strongest point with vocals a close second. His guitar playing and drumming are GOOD, but Mike and Jose are freaking AWESOME!
Unless Ben is really holding back in the songs I've heard, I haven't heard anything that indicates Ben is a better guitarist. It could be that Mike is just an incredibly humble musician. Not saying that Ben isn't good but solos like this one are a dime a dozen. Again not saying it's not difficult, but it sounds like all the other shredders (complete with tapping). But Mike sounds like no one else I've heard. Check this out, starting at 0:07 - sooo cool sounding!
I wouldn't even say that Ben is more technically skilled. Even though Mike doesn't "shred" on the Incubus albums (because Incubus doesn't call for shredding in their music), it's not like Mike can't shred... You can catch a short glimpse of it here:
watch?v=pv8xL1jV3UY
They just have totally different styles. And I think to create the kind of stuff Mike comes up with his chord voicing, riffs, use of effects and such, is more technically advanced than just "playing fast".
@BootBazaar, totally agree man. mike is an awsome guitarist and i feel like he almost always writes guitar parts that perfectly coincide with each incubus song.
@BootBazaar Ben was originally a drummer, turned guitarist, then turned bassist. Whenever he records a song he makes the drums first. Im sure Ben's a better drummer than he shows and alot better of a guitar player than he is a bassist. When he solo's on bass it sounds a guitar solo. Before he joined incubus he played guitar for the Roots, Supergrub, and Racecar. He also plays guitar for the Dividion group. He's obviously more comfortable on guitar.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. I just went by what I've heard. I've heard several of Ben's solo project stuff and so far the stuff I've heard none of his guitar or drum work is as interesting as his bass work in Incubus. Maybe it's just the Incubus songs allow him to showcase his bass talent better? His solo stuff is good, don't get me wrong, but Incubus is just on a completely different level all together.
@Massacre430: To be fair, in an interview when Ben joined the band, Mike said (roughly) "It's cool to have someone in the band who's actually a better guitarist than me, playing bass". Ben Kenney is an awesome guitarist. They have two different styles though - and I definitely think Mike is the best guitarist for Incubus.
@HLGHandlez I agree with you! He is VERY talented and I think he could definitely out perform Jose and Mike on their respective instruments. Ben is KILLER!
What's cool about Ben is how much talent he has, but he still seems chill. He has lots of creativity & it shows more in his solo work. He contributes a lot to Incubus & gets along with them great. Dirk was great at what he did, but was also a douche who added a bad vibe to Incubus & it was apparent at times during live performances. I'd sacrifice a funkier bass performance for a happier band. Kudos to Ben.
yeh after the morning view i was so sad cuz i felt that they had lost their funk but the reality is mike was always making dirks riffs.. and at least ben brought something to the table. he's so awesome at everything he does!!! Conception and the funeral is like his best song ever next to this one and a ton of others lawl
YEa he might be better at mike at guitar. thats A FACT. but that does not mean he is more musical. if ur an incubus fan, then ask your self if you would prefer steve vai play for incubus instead of mike. if you say no, then you kno why you wouldnt.
this guy is an all around talent. He can drum, bass, play guitar write great lyrics has a great voice. You just do not find such amazing musicians such as him very often in these times of ke$ha and britney spears.
the solo on this tune alone is better than ANY recorded solo that Mike Eizenger has EVER released on any material, and I have all his stuff cuz I love his playing.
@gufok dirk is a good bassist his slap is amazing but ben's smooth bassline's top that so don't insult dirk the old turntablist threaten to kill kilmore and dirhasn't anything that dumb
@gufok I agree I just can't ever decide which I like more. I always go back and forth. I think Ben is very well rounded, and he better supports incubus's newer sound. But on the bass alone, I Think Alex is better at bass alone.

His rythym playing is better than Ben's and his writing.but a pure shred-fest.Ben wins hands down. As for drummer. Jose is great but no where near as smooth and tasty as Ben.
I always wished he would do solo work but didn't know that he already had! this stuff is VERy quickly becoming my favorite music, and I've only heard 3 songs on youtube! just frickin phenomenal

im one of those fags that discovered ben's solo stuf after incubus..
wish i hadn't to be honest, i now idolize ben kenney because he is the sexiest! remember that he plays all the instruments on his cds... if that doesn't impress you then.... go... buy some kiwis or something..
i miss the incubus with dirk lance on bass. that was the incubus i liked. i've tried out the newer incubus records only after listening to ben's solo stuff. it's good, but it's not the incubus i choose to listen to.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what kills me is that i never made any 'this is better' 'this is worse' kind of statement. i say that i prefer to listen to older incubus records and the response i get is 'WRONG!!1!'.
fucking internet. it's making monsters out of people just as much as tv does.
How bout we respect Incubus for the decision they made? I idolize Dirk Lance, because he made some of my favorite CDs, but I completely dig Ben Kenney. I just like him more. Bring on the hate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what kind of alternate universe is this comment threat located in? the band can do whatever they want, so can you, so can i, so can everyone else.
my original post was simply saying that i miss the incubus with dirk on bass. that i only checked out the newer records with ben AFTER hearing his solo stuff, because it was pretty good. but i still prefer listening to the older incubus records.
there's nothing to hate on here- except 'shockashocka11' for being an uppity, illiterate twat. :)
believe me, 'losing' in an arena such as this is by far preferable to me. in order to 'win against' you, i'd have to become like you. and being as i can't even fathom how you got from my initial comment to your quaint reply, i won't go there.
i'm glad you're happy, though. even if it requires the mental colored-thumb conquest of a strawman of your own design.
ps. it's funny how i've given you some 'thumbs-ups' as well.
so true...well put man, i hate how much negativity you find on youtube these days...it's always one persons opinion against the next person, no one ever wins it's pointless!!! so much time is wasted by people trying to insult others or prove their point....that time should be put to more productive use
Ben is about the farthest thing I can imagine from a Berklee type but at the same time his playing in many ways combines what those guys want with what they'll never have-technicality AND feel. don't get me wrong, the heroes of those of the Berklee mentality are guys who also were able to combine the two i.e. Hendrix, Coltrane, Davis... he'd be better suited robbing banks with the Ex-Presidents than doing seminars at Guitar Center.
Oh man, Ben sounds very similar to Brandon, but that's not a bad thing either. he has a great hip-hop influenced voice as you can tell, while still keeping it very alternative and rocky. Definitely not an easy task to pull off, but just shows the versatility that this man brings to any project he's in.
ben kenney is a great musician, i hate it when people idolize rappers and call them a band when they dont play an instrument at all. i think incubus is better now than they were when dirk was in the band.
thats truth, but it is because mike does every melody and the compositions of the music, they (incubus) but specially mike have grown old in a musician way and they had to do it , cause music is about the feeling you put in it...
im not sure at all now but i think it could be a grestch set and paiste cymbals!(2002's maybe?) but yea hes one of the most amazing musicians ever! disitance and comfort is a masterpiesce!!
I once read an interview with Einziger where he mentioned his admiration for Kenney's multi-instrumental skills and remarked that Kenney is a better technical guitarist than he is. That being said, it's not like it takes away from all the stuff Einziger's done with Incubus over the years.
in terms of being creative, Einziger kills everyone. but I've never seen him outplay Kenney in terms of technical skill. I'm sure he might be able to, but he hasn't in any of the Incubus albums YET
Well Mike has even said that Ben is the better player in terms of technicality, i doubt we are likely to hear him out perform in that sense. Mike plays with more feeling i think though.
hmmm i dont think so, the thing i love about miek is his solos are actually very melodic and experimental such as that in sick sad little world. however id rate ben a better musician :)

i miss the incubus with dirk lance on bass. that was the incubus i liked. i've tried out the newer incubus records only after listening to ben's solo stuff. it's good, but it's not the incubus i choose to listen to.

WRONG ben kenney is amazing and only helped incubus hes so much more talented

either you can't read or you're insecure. either way, your response moved no one.

Is it coincidence that the craziest fools have the strongest belief that they're right?

what kills me is that i never made any 'this is better' 'this is worse' kind of statement. i say that i prefer to listen to older incubus records and the response i get is 'WRONG!!1!'.
fucking internet. it's making monsters out of people just as much as tv does.
intrepgun 3 years ago
How bout we respect Incubus for the decision they made? I idolize Dirk Lance, because he made some of my favorite CDs, but I completely dig Ben Kenney. I just like him more. Bring on the hate.

what kind of alternate universe is this comment threat located in? the band can do whatever they want, so can you, so can i, so can everyone else.
my original post was simply saying that i miss the incubus with dirk on bass. that i only checked out the newer records with ben AFTER hearing his solo stuff, because it was pretty good. but i still prefer listening to the older incubus records.
there's nothing to hate on here- except 'shockashocka11' for being an uppity, illiterate twat. :)

believe me, 'losing' in an arena such as this is by far preferable to me. in order to 'win against' you, i'd have to become like you. and being as i can't even fathom how you got from my initial comment to your quaint reply, i won't go there.
i'm glad you're happy, though. even if it requires the mental colored-thumb conquest of a strawman of your own design.
ps. it's funny how i've given you some 'thumbs-ups' as well.

you shouldnt waste your time replying to twats on youtube.
were all here to watch videos not try and prove whos best, or who can use the biggest words, or the most complex sentences...
as im sure you'd agree!

so true...well put man, i hate how much negativity you find on youtube these days...it's always one persons opinion against the next person, no one ever wins it's pointless!!! so much time is wasted by people trying to insult others or prove their point....that time should be put to more productive use

Ben is about the farthest thing I can imagine from a Berklee type but at the same time his playing in many ways combines what those guys want with what they'll never have-technicality AND feel. don't get me wrong, the heroes of those of the Berklee mentality are guys who also were able to combine the two i.e. Hendrix, Coltrane, Davis... he'd be better suited robbing banks with the Ex-Presidents than doing seminars at Guitar Center.

geeze put an instrument in front of this guy and he'll end up jammin like a mad man with it hes got ridiculous skills

ahh sorry that comment i juts posted was meant to be a reply to cadmiumboy

Oh man, Ben sounds very similar to Brandon, but that's not a bad thing either. he has a great hip-hop influenced voice as you can tell, while still keeping it very alternative and rocky. Definitely not an easy task to pull off, but just shows the versatility that this man brings to any project he's in.

Ah, i love bens music but it is getting to sound the same.

This song gives me hope for music again
certinshadeofgreen 3 years ago 2
ben kenney is a great musician, i hate it when people idolize rappers and call them a band when they dont play an instrument at all. i think incubus is better now than they were when dirk was in the band.
asdithgedf 3 years ago 9
I totally Agree.. they are better.
bassplayinman87 3 years ago
thats truth, but it is because mike does every melody and the compositions of the music, they (incubus) but specially mike have grown old in a musician way and they had to do it , cause music is about the feeling you put in it...
bassman1983 3 years ago
haha the Mike/Ben comparison is actually a nice break from the common Ben/Dirk comparison
Cadmiumboy 3 years ago 4
he has got to be one of my favorite musicians of all time.

im not sure at all now but i think it could be a grestch set and paiste cymbals!(2002's maybe?) but yea hes one of the most amazing musicians ever! disitance and comfort is a masterpiesce!!
kierancraddock 3 years ago
There´s no point to compare Ben with Mike. They are both talented. Important is to play right note on right time. It is not only about tech skills.
hi2602 3 years ago
I once read an interview with Einziger where he mentioned his admiration for Kenney's multi-instrumental skills and remarked that Kenney is a better technical guitarist than he is. That being said, it's not like it takes away from all the stuff Einziger's done with Incubus over the years.
vecinto 3 years ago 4
Ben Kenney is the shit!
borisparkour 3 years ago 2
this song is sick. nothing good comes out of comparing guitar playing. both Enzinger and Kenney are fantasic musicians.
I really dig this song, no pun intended.
Ben Kenney really is a truely talented and unique individual/
deanthebassfeast 3 years ago
oops I meant to type in "seen/heard"
Cadmiumboy 3 years ago
in terms of being creative, Einziger kills everyone. but I've never seen him outplay Kenney in terms of technical skill. I'm sure he might be able to, but he hasn't in any of the Incubus albums YET
Cadmiumboy 3 years ago 3
Well Mike has even said that Ben is the better player in terms of technicality, i doubt we are likely to hear him out perform in that sense. Mike plays with more feeling i think though.
ANIMVL 3 years ago
I agree that this song is amazing... but not topping mike einziger on A Crow Left of the Murder.
JagVox 3 years ago 2
your on crack
Tholzba 3 years ago
holy shit! Kenney's guitar playing in this song has topped anything Einziger has done so far!
Cadmiumboy 3 years ago
hmmm i dont think so, the thing i love about miek is his solos are actually very melodic and experimental such as that in sick sad little world. however id rate ben a better musician :)
