  • making complex nowork for easy solution is not the Job of Network Professional

  • I guess this guy wanted to waste a bunch of time. For all the modding and crap that was done you could have installed RouterOS, Vyatta, pfsense... on a small form factor PC with multi port NICs. A USB relay controller could have handled the power cycling automation. What I see here is complexity for the sake of complexity.

  • @krisdjames

Some people prefer different ways of doing things, he might be a person who prefers solid hardware as opposed to some unix based OS, It might be complex for you but it might be easier for him, Just like the router OS is easier for you. Might not be for him.

  • @jjtheclown

While I understand there are many ways to skin a cat so to speak, Having multiple pieces of hardware to accomplish what could be done in one is unnecessarily complex. When I say complexity I am referring to the many pieces being wired together to accomplish his goals. What I see here is many points of failure and inefficiency at a cost that is equal or greater than a single machine that can achieve the exact same goals. And this guy is using RouterOS in the multiple Mikrotik boards.

  • @krisdjames

I do agree with you on the fact that what he has setup is overly complex for no reason, although.it seems he had more fun doing it his way than another. To each is own I guess?

Maybe comment about the points of failure to perhaps educate the person who uploaded the video?

  • @jjtheclown

Good point! I see how my original post comes across negatively without any productive input.

  • @krisdjames
