It is very wrong to quote: "Let nobody say that they have not been offered an alternative candidate". It somewhat imply that if another candidate wins and he or she messed up, it already meant that the people made the wrong choice and they should just keep their mouth shut and blame no one but themselves. Keep in mind that an "alternative candidate" does not stop on one person alone. And there may be various root reasons why you may loose the election.
