Do you remember "The Two Ronnies"? He looks like Ronnie Corbett in that big seat, comes out with the boring preamble, then youtube goes and cuts off the punchline!
oh forgive us they made the rules theselves so they could spend taxpayers money on tvs and a whole lot of other stuff and be above the law. its using taxpayers money to buy shit they should buying theselves or using it to profit when they flip homes or using it to employ family members as secretarys who live 100 miles away or getting the Public to pay the mortage on there second home and then there renting out to someone else and keeping the money either way ITS THEFT from pocket @Oyewildthong
Although I don't like the man and think Sir George Young should have been speaker, people commenting on this page really need to get a dictionary and read up what a crime is. Well I will have a guess something which is like breaking rules set out in legislation or common law.
Why does he speak so slowly, hanging on every word? Does he really think his words are important? "Confidence placed in me" - we have none. Just another shallow, thieving, politician in it only for the money. Silly little jerk.
he had to pay back £6,508 plus VAT to HM Revenue & Customs he forget to pay when he was home flipping. and he billed the uk taxpayer £1000 to fill in his tax return he is another theif thats been rewarded with a new job £144 thousand a year a gurennted pension even if he is in the job for just one year a free apartment and a driver to pick him and take home every day WHAT A JOKE!!
the fact the new speaker was one of the mp's that stole from the public on his exspense's to talk about cleaning up the westminster is a JOKE!! fucking pathetic the man is a theif yet he is the replacement. yea this fills me with new hope . NOT!!
Nickalollyoff- I agree. I have long felt there is a profound lack of respect for authority figures in this country- even before the expenses scandal. Of course in a democracy people have every right to complain and I personally think a lot of questions need to be asked about Expenses, but when people get to the point of childish insults (particularly aimed at Mr Brown nowadays) its abusing that freedom. Politicians are fundamentally decent people who are just trying to improve society.
Both sides want Bercow ,dont fall for the game ,this is a man who wanted Blacks and Asians repatriated and get rid of the ethnic equality laws .The exact same views as the BNP
I thought it was hilarious how disappointed the Tories were when he was announced!!! (And weren't afraid of showing it!!!!) Labour were rubbing their hands with delight and rightly so!!!
When partisans of one side or the other are overwhelmingly in favour of someone who is supposed to be impartial--precisely because while sitting across the aisle his sympathies lies with them--that is cause for alarm.
I thought the way the MP's drag the new Speaker to the Chair looks absoloutly rediculous. It looks stupid!! If the new speaker has to be dragged why the hell did they put their name forward if they did not want the job! I know, I know it's tradition, but may I say it's 2009 not flaming 1709.
I also seen many of the Tory backbenchers not clapping! John Bercow must be a Tory in Red! I wanted Ann Widdecombe as Speaker. She's tough and I can see her saying order and scaring the buggers!
CULAVE is right: the Speaker having to be dragged to the chair is tradition that is not meaningless style.
It used to literally mean, and now symbolises, the Speaker's duty to stand up to The Crown in defence of the independence of the House of Commons--his head on the line.
That, plus slamming the door on Black Rod, requiring him to knock, and Her Majesty not stepping into the Commons Chambers, are all meaningful--and by seeing it everytime, we are reminded.
gagothesith- Thankyou. Indeed these traditions are all symbolic of our national heritage. Understandable anger over the expenses fiasco should not get out of hand in that people forget this symbolism.
What a pathetic speech. Is this the new speaker?? I reiterate the word "speaker".
This house as they call it is nothing more than a den of thieves. How are they going to take account for the recent revelation of how they have been swindling the public coffers to line their own pockets? Seems to me that they are getting off lightly for having what amounts to their fingers in the till! Scandalous.
Who cares 'bout his movver? The jerk's attepts at adding 'the human touch' are pathetic.

trip3newton- I don't mind it. I agree it looks silly but whilst there must be reform, some traditions at least should be maintained.

Annoying man is now speaker.
