HAHAHA.. omg! I'll be making mine this summer. umm I hope it don't end like this. I love your facial expression at the end. lol Keep trying. I'm going with the glass bottles.
Now you know why they make "blow off tubes". Your bubbler couldn't handle the fermentation as the krausen rose and plugged it up. Pressure built up, and thus the explosion. Sorry for your loss. If you try again, toss the bubbler, and use a blow off tube.
That will happen too if you give yourself enough headspace as well. That krausen just looks to be sitting so high.Looks like you still could have top cropped the beer, resanitzed the lid and still gave it a go. You didn't dump this did you? As long as you had the krausen you could have been OK.
I've had a couple barley wine batches do that exact thing on me. I've figured out that I need to pitch the yeast at 60deg and let the fermenter slowly warm up... that way I don't get the explosion.
Use a blowoff tube next time, and leave your hops in the kettle -- explosions only happen to new brewers who don't ask enough questions at the local homebrew shop.
@JMan551 My Janet's Brown ALMOST popped a when I brewed it around thanksgiving this year. I had it in the cellar stairwell going to the basement. The lid to the bucket was pushed up but not off. The airlock was clogged. Thankfully I caught it just in time before it blew.
Yep main thing wheb starting initial fermentaion is the temp...try regulating the temp to reduce to the very lower end of the yeasts range..then slowly allow fermentation until its safe to up the temp as it progresses...best not to ferment a to high a temp...say between 16-22c is about best for good flavoured ale beers..lagers can be fermented much lower..of course the yeast strain pays a large part of how the beer will ferment and start..what strain did you use on this brew?
Wow man, that sucks. But it looks cool like some kind of sculpture. Loving the Sailor Jerry's rum bottle in the background though. That's my favorite rum
Your airlock either plugged up or couldn't keep up with the rate of co2 coming out! Next time during primary fermentation, instead of using an airlock, attach a sanitized plastic tube. Attach one end to your fermenter and the other end submerged in a glass of water (co2 out, no air in). The tube can handle the high rate of co2 from primary fermentation and any overflow will flow through the tube and into the glass of water without plugging up. Once fermentation slows, you can use an airlock.
This brew takes an insane amount of malt extract and double the normal amount of yeast, they get overactive in higher-than normal temperatures. Go figure I didn't turn down the AC enough that night and look what happened... but I salvaged it and it tastes amazing... super alcoholic too.
@BeerLovesMark holy shit man what was your fermintation temp? I been thinking about brewing a batch of this, But that is the last thing i want to happen.
what kind of yeast were you using?

Two words: Fermentation Chamber! And don't pitch while it's warm, otherwise you get some strange flavors. And yeah, definitely a blowoff tube!
Brew on, bro!

probably still good dude. clean up that lid and air lock and pop it back on when the krausen goes down.

You have good beer and liquor tastes. Sailor Jerry's is my 3rd favorite rum in the world. It follows Havana Club and Pusser's.

awesome! Even if you used a blow off tube, it might have sprayed like loose fire hose.

Similar thing happened to me with an imperial IPA, not quit as extreme, With any Imperial you really should have a blow off tube,
