WOW!! Awesome.. Your home is beautiful :) My GF and I are looking for a bus and just stayed up late to watch all your videos to this point! Just a couple of hours ago you were parked on the farm in the snow with your kitchen blown away and now it's so pretty! Much love from the southern US!
I *really* like your videos, I *really really* liked this one!! Nerd r me. Would be interested in some crude measurements on the rooms ... your bus seems bigger than mine. Also how wide are the doors inside? Thanks!!
@mudspringer I uploaded our bus plan to imgur and I'll send you the link. That has all the measurements. I'll also add the link in the description of the video.
@Biker790 If we are still traveling when the girls get bigger we will upgrade to a bigger bus. We might even move into a house someday. The insulation is quite good... we insulated all the walls and double-insulated the places where windows used to be, and it has a better R-value than a mobile home. The windows are a weak spot but it makes up for it in other ways.
I'm fascinated with the Seperatt. I know Nicole says it doesn't smell but how is it overall? Pros, cons that sort of thing. How often do you end up emptying it and how gross is it when you do? I'm weighing getting one for myself so your feedback will be very helpful. :) Thank you and this project looks awesome! Great Job!
@Cypressmyst We love it. It's an amazing and simple piece of engineering. There are 3 adults and 3 kids using it at the moment and we can go 3-4 weeks before we empty it. Of course it's not like a conventional toilet so there's a couple of learning curves. One is usage - if you use less toilet paper you don't have to empty it as often, and you do need to 'flush' it after using it by pouring a small amount of water in. We keep a cup on the bathroom counter for that purpose.
@Cypressmyst Also... when you empty the bucket every month there is a somewhat unpleasant task of tying up the compost bag and putting the lid on the bucket. It's not that bad though. You just tie it, put the lid on, take the whole bucket out of the toilet and carry it out. Then I usually clean the whole inside like you would any regular toilet. One neat feature is that every time you use it, the bucket turns so you never have a pile of material growing in one area. We like it!
@GabrielBacon I would guess the family would move into a house once their trip/project is over, or after few years at most. If I recall correctly, John is studying to get into medical school, so I'm sure he'll settle into a house once he embarks on his career.
Found video via reddit. Love your home. If you ever need a more efficient, higher output alternator for charging the batteries I recommend the Fitzall-220. I believe yours outputs 60amps. The Fitzall-220 outputs 110amps at idle and 220amps when driving. I use it with my lil Kia Sould and 4 batteries. I do a lot of outdoor djing and I'm also the goto guy for electricity when our apartment complex gets the power knocked out. I got mine from powerbastards com but I'm sure you can find it cheaper
@harpersvids $35,000 over a period of two years, so we didn't have to put that together up front. As for tips, I would say that there are a lot of school bus conversions out there but it's really worth it to do the research and do a good job and not just slap something together. Cheap is quick but pay a bit more and you'll have something worth money and that will last a long time.
@Chaytup Growing up we camped with a family of 5 in either a tent or a soft-sided pop-up camper. Bus is huge by comparison. Not everyone's a weenie :p
@deputy1389 Calling people hipsters is the new hipster. I think this project is pretty damn impressive. Guess it would have been totally different if it was an old man in overalls or something?
Very Nice. I like the carpet on the stepwell. That will be good for noise. I knew the visibility for your door would be horrible. My bus has a the old jackknife door, and visibility with that isn't even that good.
John, I loved this video. Thank you so much for making it.
Sometimes through the build, when you've been caught on camera you've been... tired and "get that camera out of here!" LOL.. It's really great to see you grab the camera and just share with us what's awesome and fun about this project to you.
I'm quite jealous of the beautiful living space you all have, and with all that metal, I hope you're socking up on fridge poetry magnets, and getting touristy magnets in all the places you visit.
If you can - try to add Solar Panels to the roof of your bus. Im guessing with your current power set up, wiring for a couple of solar panels would be tricky but might be worth the effort. Excellent work! Beautiful bus!
nice bus!!!!! you put a lot of time into it. i am re-doing one myself and you have given me a lot of nice ideas to help. a lot of people laughed when i told them i bought a bus to convert and this goes to show that you can do it.

incredible home. Two big questions from me:
1. what do you plan on doing when your girls grow out of theirs bunks?
2. how is the insulation? I can't imagine your home being able to keep heat very well in the winter with all the windows? Or are they double-pane?
