Actually the emblem on the hood is the Nordic rising sun, a symbol for the SS Viking division. Sadly even though it is round it looks so much like a swastika that I usually used to ask car shows if they wanted it covered. Most did not as they said it was a piece of history.
An update on the hard starting in the video and something VW owners want to check on. We finally had a chance to work on the KDF 82E and the 1956 Porsche. Hard starting was because BOTH cars had stuck needle valves which stayed open and gravity fed gas into the engine such that the gas seeped into the oil sump and filled it to the top. So check those needle valves on your carbs and a moral of the story is turn off your reserve valve when the cars are parked.
The 1 Millionth Beetle was produced in 1955, the 5 Millionth wasn't built until 1961 and the car was a 1962 Model. Sounds to me like the Type 82 could use a 6 volt hard start relay.
@carguy53 I am a bit dyslexic with numbers, at least I did not throw the model T 15 million in there :) The starting issue is a flooding carburetor that we are dealing with now.
@daalhoffarm thank you :) I actually am pulling the engine out and giving it a thorough going over as there are a bunch of little things wrong with it. Oil leak being the most major, timing the least.
Very nice video- I never knew about the semaphore system on the early bugs! I also appreciated the test drive portion on the 82E. I knew they existed but did not know much beyond that. I've been to a few VW shows (mostly up in CT when I travel from DC) but never seen an 82E there. Good stuff!
@MikeRybak356 the semaphores began in the 1930's and appeared on some wartime bugs. Sometimes as added on boxes, sometimes in the door posts, and at least one sedan had them down low in front of the doors like the convertables.
