Madagascar should just be declared an animal sanctuary. Free from logging, land-clearing and infrastructure. Humans have hunted, poached, smuggled and pushed so many, far too many animal (and plant) species into extinction... and others to the brink, in the name of "progress".
For those who are curious, Vakona is in Perinet, on the eastern side of Madagascar, slightly north of Antanarivo. It's the expensive part to stay - like a huge hunting lodge (except you don't hunt, of course, except with the camera). There's another place to stay near there, but I don't know how much it costs - it was part of a packaged trip. You get little bungalows to sleep in with really thin walls.
That black-faced brown lemur (the male) likes to perch on men's shoulders. I've a photo with him sitting on my husband (and one of me with three using me as a tree).
Where did you photograph the ringtails? They don't live in Perinet. Part of me wants to go back and visit again, but the other part of me remembers how overwelmingly emotional some parts of it were. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the poverty is heart-breaking.
I believe the problem is that it's a poor country where there ain't a lot of imports coming into the country like building material , food and drink etc. For food , they do a lot of farming and the rice patties take up a lot of space. If they had a better economy and a way where they can be more conservative where they wouldn't be forced to use up all of Madagascar's resources , the lemurs would be in better shape. As long as the human population doesn't explode or have heavy traffic that is.
We should bring all the people from madagascar to united states, europe and other parts of the world and leave the lemurs alone in madagascar so they can have their wacky dance hahaha.
A lot of Malagasy would actually appreciate the opportunity, but when comes the time to die, most would go back to the island however they can to be buried next to their ancestors.
hey "lepoarddickhead" you need to learn a little bit more about lemurs because if you knew shit about anything lemurs eat only insects and plants and if your that stupid then mabye you should get kicked in the nuts and maybe u can have a brown lemur eat your newborn ass!!!
This is a late reply- But speak for yourself. If you knew anything about lemurs you'd know that most lemur species DO NOT eat insects. The only time a lemur will eat one is if it's biting them. They eat ONLY plants. And Leopardgeckocrazy was right- There is an introduced population of hybrid Red-Fronted Brown Lemurs (a mix of a Red-Fronted and Collared Lemurs) that are very aggressive and, during the breeding season, the females have been known to kidnap and eat baby Ring-Tailed Lemurs.
Thank You very very much for that informations! Hmm, so now journey to Vakona Lodge is my biggest dream. I'm really fascinated into lemurs and chance to seeing them in their natural enviroment is something simply amazing for me.
I recognised the Lemur's cries. But it must have be difficult to edit - to get the cries and the notes in the song to harmonize. It's a job well done!
Thanks! The song is Porcelain by Moby. In the beginning when you hear those eerie cries, that's the Indri lemurs, although it sounds like it's part of the song. (That's thanks to my husband's excellent editing!)
Cool video! Well done! I never taught the lemur were so human frendly- I can't imagine the wonderful experience you felt around your body with the lemur jumping all on your body! Lucky :)
You're going to really enjoy seeing the lemurs in the wild in Madagascar. If you can, try to stay at the Vakona Lodge - that's where Lemur Island is (where lemurs jump on your head), and it's close to two lemur preserves (including one with those gorgeous, enormous Indri lemurs). As for saving the lemurs, check out WorldWildlife and SaveTheLemur
