Love the chickens. I also had a hen for 7 yrs. that I had named Uno for the same reasons(I mean-you run out of names so....) I have a Buff Orp named Buffy(kinda obvious why!) They are wonderful animals and very entertaning.
I really enjoyed this video.I have a small flock of chickens that lay beautiful eggs.i was also once vegetarian at one time, but felt i did need some meat.I'm just starting out raising my own chickens for food.they do make fantastic pets also!
Nice video. Never mind jp. He's just an angry, sad, unemployed over 30 little twink from LA. Naturally, he's jealous of your idyllic life, the fact that you're a published author and you look much more fashionable in your cat eye glasses than he does. He's the horrible freak. You're just a nice person with chickens.
Not sure what about this would make you refer to me as a "horrible freak," JP. I happen to care for my chickens, as pets and as livestock. Self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship are hardly freakish, in my opinion.
Ashley ! I was searching chicken videos and to my surprise your beautiful face popped up. Great video- our 38 hens are coming this week!-mericatherine and jake
thanks for such a great, accessible introduction to a topic that is experiencing such a big resurgence of interest. even though i don't own chickens, knowing more about the nutritional value of locally raised, small-farm eggs has motivated me to commit to only purchasing my eggs from local farms. go, chickens!
I like your hens the are nice looking birds. I have 70 free range hens and 5 roosters. they are great pets all of them are named. I hatched about 10 of them myself. =D
im getting chicken around september.. i wanna get them as a chick but dad thinks there to much work so he wants to get them as elder ones.... if you have anything to say about getting them as chick PLEASE SAY!!
From Ashley: Caring for chicks can be time-consuming, especially when they are first hatched, as they are susceptible to a number of injuries and illnesses. That said, if you have the luxury of time on your side, raising chicks can be a tremendously rewarding experience.
More from Ashley: Your birds will be more docile towards you once grown, you can monitor precisely what their diet is from the very beginning, and you'll be able to witness the full life cycle of a chicken, learning about chicken care along the way.
Thanks for watching! Your support is appreciated. We are working on the next video now and should have it ready this spring. Hope you will come back to check it out. :)
when is your next vid coming out... i have seen a dozen others on youtube and although i am also researching chickens in literature it is always good to hear it compacted to a 1 to 10 min video. more people need to know that you don't need a cockerel for eggs (only to break up fights between the hens). well done
More from Ashley: My suggestion is to speak with your doctor, read up on the subject, and make the best, most informed decision possible about whether you should have your eggs raw or cooked.
More from Ashley: Lastly, some research has shown that raw egg whites contain an enzyme inhibitor that prevents the digestive enzyme trypsin from working. Cooking deactivates these enzyme inhibitors. On the other hand, some argue that cooking eggs may make the amino acid cysteine less available. Raw egg proponents also contend that they have increased energy and better digestion.
From Ashley: There's a bit of a debate over whether or not cooking harms any of the nutrients present in fresh eggs. On the one hand, cooking eggs is the only way to remove any salmonella bacteria that may present. Also, an anti-nutrient called avidin is found in raw egg whites. This substance binds to biotin found in raw eggs whites, a B vitamin, preventing it from being absorbed by the body. When cooked, most of the avidin is destroyed, making the biotin available.
i <3 your chickens they are so adorable! i was wondering which of the chickens is your fav???

Why is it that everyone who uploads a chicken-raising video to youtube is a horrible freak?

Hmm, I've always wanted to raise chickens. It would also be nice to have them lay eggs instead of buying them.

Ashley, Doesn't cooking the egg distroy the nutritional benefits in it?

Very informative! I didn't know that the nutrition in eggs was second only to breast milk. I want some chickens now!

Cool egg info. Makes me want to raise chickens in my own little city plot. Cool soundtrack... makes me think the upcoming book will be cool too.
