  • I'd love to play on nocrits-servers, but the maps I enjoy aren't played on many servers, At least not in my region with a decent ping and more than a handful of players.

The thing that annoys me the most is the fact that technically the chance to get a random crit is the same for everyone. But when you are killed by a random crit, you have the time to look at the kill feed and see. "Damn, that guy got lucky." When I get a random crit, I might not even realize it was luck on my part.

  • I totally agree with you Star even though to I do play on random-crit servers and it bugs me ...just like you said...completely outplay a soldier with like a class with a lot less firepower...head on ...guy is a noob but he suddenly decides to shoot the ground and gets a lucky crocket ...and that just makes me rage and hate on a game that's otherwise a lot of fun...

  • I freaking hate random crit servers, because when i do a random crit, i don't feel any satisfaction at all ("Nah, I'd rather prefer to kill him without that crit, it would be much more skillful"), and when i got, for example, crit rocket in the face, it's fucking frustrating. And there's always at least 99% random crit servers in the list =_=

  • 2:15 Rainbow Piss... Sniper must like skittles...

  • I hate random crits with a fucking passion.

  • 0:56

    Taste the rainbow, mothafucka!

  • GAEMCUEB IS BETER

  • Hah, rainbow Jarate. Wonder what Star's sniper drinks.

  • I completely agree but unfortunately some my favorite servers are random crit and literally half my deaths would be from a random crit were if there wasn't I would have killed the enemy

  • unfortunately all servers (all 8 lol) in my country are random crits, so i'm probably going to move... i'm going to tell my mother now. *returned* well she said that i should join other servers rather than moving - so be it i don't care

  • bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot bodyshot

  • @someguynumber9 And still, you are no where near as good as Star...

  • @tooni700 true he became really good

  • @tooni700 actually i was how you know?

  • @someguynumber9 Show me your UGC highlander winning medal, Goodbye

  • @tooni700 i was as good then i stopped now i play again

  • @someguynumber9 Medal or it never happened.

  • wtf rainbow piss?

  • You say that people of older than 13 years are better than people of 13 and younger thats RACISME

  • @pareltjeeeh learn to spell racism

  • @pareltjeeeh I'd rather say "ageism". Racism is when you tie up a man, burn him with cigarettes and killing him because his skin color makes him inferior to you.

And being completely technical, people above the age of 13 has a better depth perception and their senses are more developed than people below the age of 13

  • OTF2WIKI. To get a standard weapon boost of 12pct crit chance... you need to deadl 800 damage within the last 10 seconds

  • besides Star saying people are "better" for getting random crits, he's right about everything else in this video. random crits are for casual and/or bad players because every now 'n then they will be able to kill someone when other wise they just couldn't if the situation was fair. it's one reason why world of warcraft is so popular, that game is full of garbage players.

  • PC FTW

  • Because of the nocrit servers it makes stuff like the manmelter and holiday punch a strait upgrade which there are no strait upgrades in weapons they're all sidegrades.

  • I hate no crit servers.

  • The only thing that annoys me about no-crit servers is the lack of a backstab animation. Can someone patch that?

  • how do you find no crit servers?

  • I WAS THE SPY (KITTY ROCKATEER) THAT SAPPED THE SENTRIES THAT U SNIPED IN THE BEGINING OF THE VIDEO! :D

  • So in no crit servers there will be engineers shooting a shotgun, every single bullet/pellet hitting in the same spot? = 200 damage..?

  • @OonSami No, the "no random bullet spread" option just makes it so the the bullets spread out in a square pattern, instead of just wherever they happen to feel like spreading to. The further away your target is, the further the bullets spread from the center, and the fewer pellets hit your target. Therefore, less damage. You still have to aim in order to do good damage, that damage is just more consistent with how well you aim.

  • @chmoor10 Ohhh hahah so i completely misunderstood it =D Thanks for clearing it up, really well explained

  • I'm usually for no crit, but no bullet spread is ridiculous. Shotguns have bullet spread. And weapons that have bullet spread are incredibly more powerful without bullet spread.

  • @SpelledOutD00M you don't understand. go to tf2wiki.com and look up bullet spread. its not what you think; it IS fair and balanced.

  • @Vizaru There isn't a page called bullet spread.

  • @SpelledOutD00M yeah, sorry, i realized that once i said it. but i assumed you would at least google it or something (who doesnt now-a-days?). if you google image "tf2 random pellet spread" you will see a few pics explaining it graphically.

  • I want rainbow piss too!

  • whats ur secondary

  • @evilmonkeyballs999 jarate; it has a custom skin so its rainbow color rather yellow peepee

  • TF2 is better than COD! You sir are a wise man

  • AMEN!

  • I don't mind nocrit servers, but personally don't choose to play on them. However, I really want the weapons that HAVE no random crits as a downside to have a different downside IF AND ONLY IF you are playing on a nocrit server. For example, the Persian Persuader is a straight upgrade over the Bottle on a nocrit server because the random crits are not happening anymore anyway; I know straight upgrade weapons already exist, but why do we need more?

  • @Numbuh214 first of all: Persian persuader is NOT a straight upgrade b/c of the ammo conversion. Show me one competitive player who uses it over the bottle.

Second: i agree for the most part, but it doesn't make too much of a difference. it you get to the point where it does make a difference (i.e. competitive tf2), they ban a lot of OP weapons anyway.

  • @Vizaru My bad... what I meant was, it's a straight upgrade in the situations you'd normally consider it anyway (that is, in being a Demoknight); the original Powerjack was somewhat bad in this regard, as it not only gave the 75 health on kill it does today, but it did 25% more damage AND had the sole downside of "no random crits." That's fixed now, yes; but you can't really balance a weapon solely around lacking crits, because everyone will pick it on nocrit servers.

  • 8:47 you are laughing at me?

  • i type no crit in the tags but only like 3 servers show up

  • @rawr261 you have to type it in one word, nocrit

  • ...then what about all crit servers? xD

  • 1:53 wtf???

  • MAC IS BUTTER THUN PC RADDA RADDA RADDA

  • Would that make some weapons op? That depend on no random critical hits as a downside. I got into tf2 because it wasn't so tryhard like something like CSS.

  • Since I live in Australia and u live in America it is hard to find servers with no crit

  • I have an idea on how to correct the balance issue that crits seem to try to fix. What if crits were eliminated, and every class got 6 seconds of invincibility that could be used all at once, whenever? Make them slow to recharge, put in a recharge condition, and bam, it's now easier to learn how to play. Some stuff would have to be sorted out, but it's doable.

  • Actually, having played on a no-crit server recently, I think I might know why crits were implemented. Essentially, if the difference between one side's skill level, and another side's skill level, is big enough, they can completely shut out one team, and prevent the other side from participating at all. So, crits may have been implemented to prevent that, and enable teams to at least move out of their spawn point..

  • As a fan of DnD I am 100% pro crit. If the base probability is the same for everyone and it can only be modified by skill of play, then we are all on an even playing field. In life sometimes crazy random shit happens. I like that to be true in my games also.

  • PC FTW!!!

  • Was your Jarate instantly recharging during this match, or is the HUD messed up somehow?

  • idc what server i play on. i play to have fun. tho i would like to try a no crit server. and thats right, tf2 is better than any CoD game. fact on that is they are tryin to folo the actual wars on earth. tf2 isnt and if you want to play in an actual war type game then go into the marines, like me lol

  • i see now that i agrere sumwhat but it doesnt make that much of a difference cause i play on your server anyway, and i herd you say that you dont like a 2 - 12% chance of someone being better than you...

<----- 100% chance to be worse than you.

  • hey star, I have a question about random bullet spread. When no random bullet spread is disabled does it only affect shotgun and scatterguns or it does it also applies to pistols and spy revolver? Is it disabled in your server? Thanks.

  • @MrJuzJoe bullet spread is off on my server - it only effects shotguns

  • @Niichts Star i totally agree with you bout the No crit and Random crit im sorta like you but i prefer random because of bullet spread and damage spread :D cuz i think the bullet spread with the shotgun makes it more realistic in my opinion. and at the end you said TF2 is better then COD its better then Treyach but not #Infinity Ward Treyarch only rely on Zombies this is all my opinion so no-one hate. i would like to play with you once i know everyone asks this but the only way is getting lucky

  • @Niichts I agree that random crits favour poor players. Good players will usually win without the crits, the only way random crits can change the outcome is by letting the worse player win. However: for pub servers random crits can be a good thing for defending heavies, soldiers and demomen, especially on maps like badwater, as it gives them a chance of killing enemy snipers without abandoning the cart, when their own snipers suck too much balls to provide them with cover.

  • @Niichts hey star xbox or ps3 ... lol jokes nice vid tho

  • This is how I view random crits. Lets calculate the rate you get them: 2% + whatever damage youve done or percentage depending on firing time (fully auto weapons). That doesn't add to much. Now lets calculate the rate YOU get hit by crits: Every person you ever play against times 2% etc. Now it is an unpleasant factor you always have to expect during play.

  • Why does PS3 guy sound like Christopher walkin?

  • urghey, crits arethe bestest

  • Woah, cool jarate model, star

  • i always knew about crits, and i thought it wasn't unfair and it just added some variety and let you get some more weapon stats into some update gun, guess it's influenced by a total obsession of the luck stat in Fallout

  • What HUD are you using?

  • @Zackr27 watch his videos :P

  • the first server i ever played on was a nocrit, and i didn't realise it at all. then after a week or so of playing on this server they banned me for not donating. then i joined a crit server, i thought that a soldier with a crit rocket was hacking because he didn't have a crits kreig medic with him.

  • i like how you just bashed cod in the face at the end there and although i do play cod on xbox i would much rather play tf2 on my cpu BUT my laptop cant do much unless i want to play at 3 frames/sec.

  • Oh. I C U P rainbow colors, star.

  • hahaha love the end comment. Keep up the good work Star.

  • WAHWBAHWAB ps3 is better im 13 year old xD. but to commet for real i hate sniping in this game cuz im use to like cod where u get be aiming and moving fast to help aim like if he a lil to the left i just move to the left and shoot instead of aiming to the left and shooting c=-=U?

  • Also I finally killed a Soldier with both shots of a Loch n Load, was a good day. Anyways you make excellent vids which I love to watch xD

  • Well I've only been playing TF2 for 4 months (awesome game) and on random crit servers. I admit I love killing someone with no crits, gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Plus I have lousy aim ;)

  • fuuuuuuuuuuck, i wanna play tf2 so bad on pc but i dont have good enough oc (laptop) always wanted it since lite 2008 when i played it on xbox :/

  • soo you mean you whant no one get a chans of killing a pro?

  • lol, wen ever i say TF2 is better than COD, i get teased. but im glad u stood up for TF2

  • I'd like to know what's the easiest way to find these good active no crit servers? And yes I fucking hate random crits.

  • Hmm i've never even thought this in depth about crit vs. no crit. But your points are very valid, star, and i'll definitely give no crit servers a try.

  • Excellent info for all the TF2 nublets like myself. I honestly liken this debate to the "items on or off" debate in the Smash Bros. community. Being firmly on the side of skill regardless of how much that hurts me, I think I'll search "no crit" from now on.

Now, competitive Pokemon on the other hand is arguably all about risk management....

  • Wow I agree. One time I was getting dominated by some noob an a most of.his shots were crits. The bad was that i was in an rtd server.

  • I am so offended, I can't believe you said that.

  • RAINBOW JARATE

  • i don't like random crit but damg spread makes since you know with that being how a shot gun works in real life

  • I think what we can all take from this is that tf2 is miles better than CoD. There you go.

  • lol most people dont care cause its no biggie :3 but yeah no crits is fine aswell as crits hehe

  • lol i dont care crits or no crits dont care although does confuse me when people care ^_^ hehe cause its like no crits is kewl :D and crits are fine to so its a bit weird freaking out about either :3

  • I personally enjoy no-crit servers more. If anything, I honestly die more to crit heavies who enjoy LOL NO RANGE DROPOFF to their damage and minigun-snipe me. Really, I die more to that than to crockets. Because the heavy in question = silly enough to use his minigun at long range.

Melee combat changes so drastically once you take out the crit aspect that it becomes what it's meant to be - last resort (unless you're a spy / demoknight ofc)

I feel like ubersaw has 70% crit chance xD

  • 8:57 OOOH now you've done it

  • I actualy don´t care if there is random crit or not,I don´t even noticed there is a difference .

  • 7:53 *zoom in* *see the enemy sniper rifle's red dot* *zoom out* *walk away*

  • which is STAR's name on tf2 beacuse I want to see his backpack on tf2backpack examiner

  • @vladu14negura Niichts.

  • Good analysis from the viewpoint of skilled player v. uneducated / uninterested players. You forgot to mention Damage Fall Off (range) though. It doesn't really have anything to do with the topic of chance versus skill, but it's the last element for determining your damage, and it would have been good information for anyone that you're educating about the topic for the first time.

  • i am one of the ppl who just dont care.

  • i myself are not a huge fan of random crits, i dont like getting killed by crockets or any other stuff like that, and while its fun getting crits its really something i can be without, only reason i dont play nocrit servers is that i dont want to limit myself, i sort servers by best ping and then pick out the one i want to play on depending on playercount and map.

  • @azorian2 Pretty much exactly what I do.

  • Personally I actually like the equalizing factor of random crits, but then again I'm not exactly a pro player.

Also just wondering what you do on your nocrit server about weapons/items where nocrit is part of the "balancing" factor valve put in (market gardener, frontier justice, Cow Mangler, etc...)

  • @ressurrector666 /agree

  • @ressurrector666 I don't believe anyone's replied to you thusfar, so I'll just kind of give my two cents on "no random crit" weapons on no-crit servers. Firstly, it's a good idea to put in your mind all of the "no random crit" weapons' stats. For a large majority of them, you'll notice 2 key things. 1. They have a controlled way to crit. 2. They have additional downsides. There are few exceptions of course (ex. Market Gardner), but most are balanced due to those 2 things.

  • @ressurrector666 Additionally, for the few weapons that have the only downside of "no random crits", you must be aware if the weapon has a hidden downside. For instance, the Ullapool Caber and Persian Persuader only have a listed downside of "no random crits", however the UC also does only half melee damage and loses it's blast after one hit while the PP disallows the Demoman from collecting any ammo (dispensers/cart and resupply exception).

  • @ressurrector666 Finally, the Market Gardner is the ONLY weapon in the game in which its one downside is "no random crits". However, with the choice of taking that, the Disciplinary Action, or Equalizer during a given match, taking the Market Gardner is typically not a smart choice. Also, two stock weapons never gain random crits even when the option is turned on. Those being the Sniper rifle and butterfly knife, which retain their balance even without crits enabled.

  • @ressurrector666 In summation, only weapon in the game is solely balanced around random crits. Others that contain that downside share other downsides and usually have some way of rewarding additional damage either in crits or mini-crits to the player for completing a requirement (ex. revenge crits, axtinguisher on fire crits, headhots, Soda Popper hype meter, etc) To reiterate, a player gives up not only random crits, but some other benefit(s) to gain situational damage boosts on those weapons.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if there was something in the code for TF2 that causes critical hits to happen more frequently in situations where you are likely to die or be overwhelmed. I notice that most of my random crit rockets, for example, happen in situations like when I blunder around a corner into a heavy with a revved up minigun, or something similar. I seem to recall STAR mentioning the "voodoo" inherent in TF2 in a previous video, and I'm inclined to agree...

  • I agree. JTLYK there are 2 types of people on no-crit servers as well. EXTREME TRY HARDS. Or guys like me who hate when we get outplayed by grandma mc bunny waffles because they crit.

  • @jaktbone jtlyk... just to let you know?

Also, you're wrong. Three types of people. The two you listed and spies. None of my weapons can benefit from random crits so why the fuck should I have to deal with other people getting melee crits on me? Fuck that noise.

  • @ObeIiskos ehm because its suppost to? Backstabs in general should be an instant kill.

  • @jaktbone supposed*

  • @jaktbone ... what the hell are you talking about?

  • Question : How do you get that critical hit above the head, and that cool interface in gameplay ? with the health and bulltets being big thanks

  • hey star when you upload more videos

  • lol how dare Star spoil his commentary by mentioning CoD

    lololol JK

I play CoD occasionally, but DEFINITELY prefer TF2

    so yea...

  • my opinion is that we kinda need random crits because some items are penilaized in not having them, that being a downside. without that they are missing a part of that weapon.

  • @MrLouisBelcourt lol, if I understand what youre saying: the weapons that ARE meant to get crits somehow then, yes, they will still get their crits. This factors in on everything that causes crits or activates crits.

  • @jaktbone NO its like how certain melee weapons dont get random criticals as a penalty. if you are on a no crit server that weapon has an advantage

  • have you ever played on a prop hunt or surf server i'm just wondering if you played anything other than reguler tf2

  • HeY StAr CaN U dO A CrOcKEts R bS GuIDE trololol

  • ...is that a texture to replace the healing symbols to hearts?...

  • @niichts the damage spread isnt random, its based on range, the closer u are the more damage you do, the further you are the less, and its called damage drop.

  • Comment removed

  • @fullmidgetalchemist1 naw.. theres a small (no idea what) variance in dmg dealt. dmg falloff is different

  • @tehsilenttube I think the variation is something like 15%.

  • I love random crit servers

  • STAR this should help. You have to reach 800 damage within the past 20 seconds inorder for it to get the 10 or 12 percent crit chance. A spy will do 6 times the amount of health someone has. So killing a heavy with 300 health will do 1800 damage, therefore making it easier to pull off critz.

This video is the best one that explain crits:

    /watch?v=YG0oc0w0SYY

  • i play pokemon, and i've just learned to deal with bad luck. there is a 10% chance to crit(double damage) every single damaging attack. then there is effects that induce statuses that can completely hinder one poke or ruin lose you the whole match.

  • I am all for random crits. Think of this, on a control point map, both teams are attempting to capture point B. Both teams are equally balanced (hypothetically saying) and it's just an endless stalemate. Crits end that stalemate and allow the game to move on (even if it's "unfair" in your opinion).

  • PC is better than every console anyway.... Now you have won the internet

  • Well, is that so bad that ppl get lucky like 2 times in a million? does that rlly messes up the game play? i get thE bullet spread and the damage, but no random crits!? I say let them be xD one of my favourite moments r wen i fire them, or wen i see them coming and i can only say HOLLY SH...!

  • Imagine if jarate would be rainbow colored by default how the master's yellow belt would look like :O Also sniper would have the perfect weapon against scouts

  • Comment removed

  • Also, random crits just don't belong in tf2. Just because dumb servers run 32man random crits enabled doesn't mean tf2 was balanced around either random crits or 16 players per team. On the contrary, crits weren't added in the name of balance, they were added in the name of fun. Since I don't see the fun in getting tons of kills because I got lucky or dying just because another guy got lucky, I only play nocrit servers.

  • @ObeIiskos Actually, crits are balance, in the form of weapons that have no random crits. For example, it's the only downside to the Persian Persuader. In a melee duel, normal players have no chance against a demoknight, and on nocrit servers he becomes an unstoppable force. For there to be a 15% chance an enemy could instantly kill him makes the demoknight more cautious, whereas with nocrit, he can attack without a care in the world. To be fair, though, most people could outsmart a demoknight.

  • @Grifwich The fact that valve balances weapons by removing something that can be toggled is a good example of valve being stupid and balancing weapons based around how most pubs are played: 32man with random crits enabled.

Just because valve caters to a casual audience and bad servers doesn't mean crits are balanced or belong in tf2 in the first place.

  • @ObeIiskos ...That's exactly why they belong in TF2. Because it is a casual game. In competitive play, very few new weapons are allowed. Valve chose to, and continues to create a casual, non-pro game. It's for the fun of it.

  • @Grifwich If you're aiming for balance, crits, weapon spread, and damage spread don't belong in tf2. For casual, unserious play, they're fine.

  • @ObeIiskos Agreed.

  • Lol ya! Pc is the best gaming platform and TF2 is better than COD!!!

  • OMG you have rainbow piss jarate you are like my best friend now. Like this for the rainbow piss jarate.

  • 1:52

WTF happens here? Did you get facestabbed?

  • i hate MELEE crits, most of the time i get fkd in close combat by stupid MELEE CRITS wich is pretty common --''

  • A shotgun makes no sense without damage/bullet spread. The whole point of the shotgun is that it is an effective weapon when you're up close, and unreliable at mid-far range. Without this mechanic, it's easier to snipe off your opponents at a distance with a shotgun.

This would also greatly affect the balance of heavies at longer range.

Random crits also make sense to me. It doesn't benefit the strong players, but does benefit the weak. It's more inclusive.

  • @TwirlySocrates Ya it does benefit the strong players to but no as much as it does the weak players the strong players still get the random crits but they dont need them as much as the weakk players do. It still benefits both sides though.

  • i typed this with my dick

  • What do you think about "All Crit" servers? I fucking love them.

  • Omg nhreaer i cant believe u said that star nheirnh

  • I like it, its like pokemon critical hits all over again :D

  • can we get a mediavel gameplay? (Demoknight)

  • Whenever i crit someone and kill them after an epic battle with a little life left

    I always say sorry ;L

  • @stormburn13 There is still bullet spread in " no bullet soread mode." However, instead of the spread being random, it spreads in the same pattern every time.

  • Niichts well i would say i hate ps3 controller bad design :D PC? Hmm well yea i agree but too many cheaters/hackers :/

  • I think the argument for and against crits is whether you look at TF2 like Chess or like Football; in most real sports there is always that element of luck, that one in a hundred winning shot, and in a way bringing that into the game just adds more of a sense of immersion and realism. With something like Chess however, something completely binary and logical, it's entirely about skill and tactics, with no room for the element of chance. It's almost the difference between an Art and a Science.

  • @LackingSaint

Of course there is a element of chance dear boy.

When human processing is involved, there is always the chance of gaps in logical decision making; hence a lucky break to take advantage over a mistake your opponent made but didn't realise it.

  • Crit chance becomes higher than more damage you deal, so it kinda rewards skilled players. But the entire Spy class depends heavily on chance aswell. No matter how good of a Spy you are, you still depend heavily on the enemy. A Spy is only as good as the enemy allows him to be.

There are crits in a lot of games, and you could use the "It's bullshit!" argument in each one them. But take it easy, It's a video game, it's about having fun. Love it or hate it, crits are here to stay.

  • Meh, random crits aren't even that common anyway, they don't bother me at all.

  • Star: "They have a chance to be better than me, and thats something that ive never agreed with." (06:25)

    ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Oh please, its already fairly easy to gain an advantage over your opponents - just tell your friend to join the game and be a Medic. Voila! You are owning ass in a nice stable way, without the randomness.

I fully support random critz. It helps immensely when you fight things like overhealed Heavy and make the Kritzkreig less powerful, I am all for that.

If I wanted to play on the other level I'd simply 6v6 with the competitive rules.

  • Even if random crits balance themselves out, i.e. you get a kill with them here, get killed by them their. I still prefer every battle being completely level, no matter how well you've done in the last 10 secs or if you happen to stumble upon that 2% it's just you vs someone else.

  • where did u get that reticule?

  • Magneto lvl3 catchphrase: "You. Are. Defeated!" every death :D

  • I c u p rainbow colors. Sorry, couldn't resist. Epic skin. (going to gamebanana)

on the concept of randomness, it is idiotic in essence. Randomness, uncalculatible advantages and disadvantages, etc. are generally completely stupid. Chance is a concept that simply should not exist for anything. It makes no sense whatsoever to have randomness.

  • CoD is fun and easy to pick up. TF2 is fun but has a very hard learning curve.

Console is easy to use. No looking to upgrade your console because you can't play the game you want on the highest setting. PC is good because of the customisation.

  • I like random crits, because I am a casual gamer and I play SOLDIER a lot. And as we all know, the most fair thing in the world is a randomly shot crocket that hits you simply because the game does not like you today =D

  • PC VS CONSOLE OR COD VS TF2

  • Life is Random
