My step dad uses coconut oil, and it gives the popcorn this AMAZINGLY tropical taste. It's sweeter, and I like it like that. Also another upside to popping your own popcorn (college kids) is that IT'S CHEAPER THAN BUYING PRE-MADE, as are so many other things, like limeade and lemonade.
One question though: I have a pot, but I don't have a lid with a steam hole. Is there a way I can substitute? I DO have a strainer that fits over the top...
@GummiHug OMG, I can't believe I never thought to try coconut oil! As for the pot cover, my one with the vent broke, so I've been using a plain pot lid, and just kinda holding it loosely and letting the steam out as I go.
I was looking for a way to let more of the kernels pop because at least a third doesn't pop. Seeing you I think I know what I can do. A little clumsy, still very charming. Thumbs up!
loved your video I use an old pressure cooker pot (that I lost the lid to). pop corn comes out great and it is truly economical besides i don't have a microwave nor do I want one. Happy popping!!!

i wasnt planning on actually making popcorn ...because i havent made dinner yet...but i think im going to have popcorn for dinner because of this video :)
great video. I remember doing this when I was young, then I switched to microwave (for some weird reason) if your city has a Co-op or similar store, you can buy the popcorn by the pound. it's way better than the pre-packaged ones.
i am so impressed with myself! and it's all thanks to your video! my local UK store didn't have the microwave bags and i had SUCH a craving for popcorn. this is delicious. i even used olive oil cause that was all i had, and it was fine :). THANK YOU!
I loved your video. You are fuckin funny too. Try popping it with Parkay Squeeze margarine! Yummy! Also, little know fact... popping it with bacon grease is A-FUCKIN-MAZING!!! OMG so good!!!! Anyway, i noticed your Calrod glows purple.... what's up with that?? Cool! So thank you for the video! Oh and PS to all the stupid people-- if your pot is smoking or burning you have your heat too high or you're not shaking the pot or BOTH! God damn people come on!!!
Great video. I've got some expensive, heavy bottom pots and was worried about scratching, but if I can lift it off the burner, I'm set. That's exactly what I was wondering so thanks for covering all the bases here for folks in different situations. The only thing to add is which oils won't smoke. :)
@alishadoggie21 Check the ingredients and some of the health issues for folks who have worked in factories making microwave popcorn. She just made popcorn - microwave popcorn is a low-cost, engineered popcorn-like semi-edible substance. Totally worth the price difference if you've got one at your store.
@Ashtree81 :) It may have been the oil. Try using sunflower oil, or vegetable oil. I use sunflower these days, and it works great. Some oils smoke in high heat.
If you want microwave popcorn without the grossness, put two TBSP of popcorn in a paper lunch sack , and fold over the top tightly two or three times and put it in the microwave on the popcorn setting. I learned this from Alton Brown. He recommends stapling the bag, but I never have and it works fine. I haven't found it necessary to add oil unless I want it for flavoring, and then I don't have to have one of those air poppers.
@PaperMs I'm not sure if that's true because of the different smoke points of oils? It's difficult to imagine using olive oil or grape oil for popcorn. Although I have switched to sunflower oil myself.
My mother and I tried this recipe and it's absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much :) Such a more healthier option than the microwave! Not to mention your bubbly personality as well!
I love how you read the directions! : D maybe you're not pro like me? ;D anywho~ this is a great video cause this makes explaining how to do this easy for my chinese friend! : )
Thanks for this video, you make it look super easy. I've only ever made Jiffy pop, and stuff on the air popper. Does this method taste anything like those two at all? Meh, either way, I'm gonna give this way a shot. Thanks again!
I just tried this and got a whole bowl of yummy fluffy popcorn! I didn't have a pot with a vent, but I used a pot with a glass lid so whenever I saw it was fogging up,I opened it SLIGHTLY to let steam out(careful though, don't burn yourself!)
And I always find when I just shake some salt,it always just goes to the bottom of the bowl. So,after I took out the popcorn I warmed a little bit of oil in the same pot, then poured it over the popcorn and added salt, and then shook the popcorn around :)
Thanks! I added a bit of cayenne and cinnamon to spice it up. Every other time I tried I burned it, but by heating the oil a little first and shaking it i was able to avoid that!
HI Liz, I love the butter lovers flavor for the microwave Act II range. Do I add butter instead of the oil? do I add it after its popped or do I mix it with the oil before popping?
i just throw it on the pot and it pops. no shaking no oil no salt. is there anything wrong with that? sorry i am a man, i don't know much about cooking
@kozas0 lol You know, I think that the oil makes it pop up more fluffy, and the shaking is just to distribute the heat and keep it from burning. But if what you're doing works, then it works, you know?
Hi Klarinetta, I've found that I can actually use less oil with popcorn I buy out of the bin at my local natural food market. (Like a Whole Foods, but I go to a place called Henry's.) Anyway, with this popcorn I use 1 tablespoon oil for 1/4 cup popcorn. So if you try a different popcorn, maybe an organic popcorn from a natural food market, you may be able to get away with less oil.
I mean I eat healthy fat-free food and 1 tablespoon of oil(Isio or Wesson) and no butter at all makes for over 20% fat in my food and fat should not be more than 20% with carbohydrate 40-50% and protein 30-40%.
Is there no way of making a popcorn without using so much oil ? I've tried 50/50 water and oil mixed in a spray bottle and it works really great for frying food but when I tried it with popcorn in a pot it didn't pop at all and just started to burn. I tried 1 tablespoon didn't work either and it just did not work until I used over 2 tablespoons of oil and I think it's way too much.
I really enjoyed watching the vid =] Thanks lizriz !
Im in UK and I don't think I have seen regular kernels in any of our supermarkets ( they sell the nasty microwave stuff and I know what you mean about trying to add melted butter to it, eww its just a mess), but I am going to try hunt some down because I really want to try this! It looks fun =] Thanks again!
You know, it may be the brand. In the video I used Orville Redenbacher, but now at home I have this organic popcorn I bought and it doesn't pop up as fluffy at all.
@lizriz HI Liz, I love the butter lovers flavor for the microwave Act II range. Do I add butter instead of the oil? do I add it after its popped or do I mix it with the oil before popping?
@lizriz HI Liz, I love the butter lovers flavor for the microwave Act II range. Do I add butter instead of the oil? do I add it after its popped or do I mix it with the oil before popping?
if you put the salt in with the oil at the beginning then the popcorn gets flavor cooked into it and its really tasty! and stove top popcorn is so much more fun because you can experiment with different flavors and techniques to see which kind you like the best!
Olive oil has a very low smoke point (when oil begins breaking down due to heat), so it's not ideal for popping popcorn where you need the oil to be really hot.
i generally air pop my popcorn, but i will do this when im not around my air popper. its also much healthier than microwave. (still not as healthy as air popped) that is unless u pour oil and salt all over it. i like it plain just as well.
Kids these days don't know good popcorn- they think that microwave stuff is good. HA!...now I just need to melt some butter....
Thanks for taking the time to make this vlog, I was about to call my mother, because my 7 year old son had a hankering for a movie and popcorn. THis was so much quicker, and I didn't have to hear about her complain about neighbors
you know i missed pop corn so much, ´cause here in germany you don´t get the real stuff, and finally i got some natural pop corn, so i was ready to cook it and i burn it.
i feelt so stupid, i used to do it as a kid all the time and now...NOW I´M A USELESS GUY WHO DON´T KNOW HOW TO POP CORN
but thanks to you tonight ain´t gonna be a lonely night
Thanks to you lizriz, and Mr. Reddenbacher, I just enjoyed a bowl of fresh stove top popped corn. It didn't take any longer than microwaved popped corn, and every single kernel popped with no burning.
Mriietube - I shake the pan to distribute the heat and to the kernels around in the oil. And because my mother always shakes the pan. So I'm not sure if it's a must, really, but I think it does increase the popping speed and make sure everything pops up. I can't imagine a stove top that couldn't take a little pan shaking. :)
Great video I bought kernels at whole foods for like 1 dollar a pound best easiest snack to make.

cheerscomments 2 years ago
@cheerscomments
olive oil would probably burn at the very high temperatures you need to make popcorn
also olive oil has a strong flavor which may ruin the taste of the popcorn
i would go with a milder oil. sunflower is probably the best choice.

i generally air pop my popcorn, but i will do this when im not around my air popper. its also much healthier than microwave. (still not as healthy as air popped) that is unless u pour oil and salt all over it. i like it plain just as well.
the oil thing was rather amusing btw

Kids these days don't know good popcorn- they think that microwave stuff is good. HA!...now I just need to melt some butter....
Thanks for taking the time to make this vlog, I was about to call my mother, because my 7 year old son had a hankering for a movie and popcorn. THis was so much quicker, and I didn't have to hear about her complain about neighbors

So I'm going to try this and if my house burns down you can buy me a new one. :)
Something with an indoor pool.... maybe a bowling alley and an entire closet full of popcorn seeds... yes I'm a junky.
So, that being said... let's go get a free house... I mean popcorn! let's go get popcorn :D

Thanks to you lizriz, and Mr. Reddenbacher, I just enjoyed a bowl of fresh stove top popped corn. It didn't take any longer than microwaved popped corn, and every single kernel popped with no burning.
Thank you.

nesossin - Butter is yum!

how come you're shaking the pan? does that affect the popping-speed?
btw, what does your pan-top look like after this? hehe.. Is it important to have a good resistant top, or is that not imporant?

Hey, thanks! And yum! :)

Good job. If you will add little bit sugar to pan and shake pan little bit more than you did, you will get nice sweet popcorn.
