@shawnielee1976 Not long after this footage was taken, little Anjali finally did get a dress. Up until that age covering the body does not appear to be much of a concern among the poor in that neighborhood.
@cb108 That's good to hear! I guess we take things for granted in America, and perhaps, like you said...it's not as big of a concern over there until they reach a certain age. In any case...I'm glad she received a dress. A beautiful little girl for sure!
Thanks for your comment. The kids always showed their appreciation with their smiles. Listen to "Flower Children's Love-in", Music For Untouchables", "Rag Picker's Daughter", and "Good Intentions".
how sweet of you to call the children 'your friends' and give them your attention and time. What else could be more important? Some children have all but just not that loving attention from adults. I wish I were also there to play with those children.
It's amazing how poverty can make a person so humble and pure. The joy they have inside of waking up and go play with their friends relief their sadness.

They got more slums in Mumbai than Bangalore. Bangalore has improved over the past few years, even though there are still some issues there to address though.
i wish i can give them all baths and take them shopping for some good clothes. Then take them to chucky cheese in america and show them love that a mother can give
@temickab Chucky cheese and other franchises are the reason for world poverty, the raising and feeding of animals takes many resources that could and SHOULD go to these desperate children. Educate yourself on where your food comes from-it is disgusting.
i wish i could fly all these kids to a developed country such as Australia, (where i live in) and give them all the luxuries people here (and me) take for granted. Its amazing when you see these children smiling over such small luxuries after all they go through/without even having the basic necessities of survival. It's unforgettable. If only we could switch places for one day, give them the chance.
@cb108 Is it you here? I love the title Raagas for ragamuffins. Did you ever feel in any danger when you did this? Once when I was in India I touched the head of a homeless child and offered him tea from a tea stall, the man refused to sell me tea for the child, people came up and said he was a low caste I shouldnt touch him, so I asked the people gathering around to mind their own business. I felt scared for myself and my son, we were waiting on a train, I am muslim so i was esp. scared.
@chutilerki Glad you love the title :Ragas For Ragamuffins. For several years I was searching for a title that I really loved, and it finally came ("Harmony For the Homeless" was suggested by a friend to replace my original title: "Music For Untouchables", but never really loved it). I never felt any threat from the locals. They knew i was an American and didn't live within the normal boundaries they operated in, so they were tolerant. But I only let the kids listen to Indian classical music.

Nakedness in poor young children is not a big deal in that neighborhood. But they usually get clothes on no later than five years old. I think it may be in part an economic thing --saving money on clothes.
I recently worked in a nepelese orphanage for two months and its true..they loved my ipod and my camera.. they are soo iterested in their own culture and even in my own.. they asked many questions.. i wantedto take them home with me.. many of them have never been to school and will never have an oppurtunity to do so.. i enden up leaving my ipod @ the orphanage.. the smiles on their faces were just like 4:35. one day soon i will go back to live there permanantly i encourage you to visit the slums

I remember when I visited India a few years ago a man bought tickets to the "Tibetan Music Awards" for a few village kids who otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford tickets, which were all going to American tourists (like my group) who couldn't appreciate the music nearly as much as the kids, who were ECSTATIC beyond ecstatic to receive the free tickets from the man. Cries of "thank you" from all the little kids...

Amazingly, even with 20 or so kids at a time all clamoring to use one of the two headphones, they did not damage the delicate wires in three years time! Never any theft, not that there was really an opportunity. Once, when I was with a small goup of very young kids listening to the headphones, a man called out to me, with some aggressiveness: "What are they listening to?!" When I told him the name of one of India's most revered composers of spiritual music, he was very relieved and delighted!

No worries. The Indians are taking away your jobs in America, Europe etc. America is heavily in debt and your country is going down the drain. Get your pathetic ego trip while you can.. that'a all you have. ;)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Rather pathetic clip. It only shows that you get an ego trip slumming around poor children and filming it while closing your eyes for your blacks, homeless , trailer people and mexicans in your home country. 'Nice' person indeed.
the thing is ppl in these country are very rich its not like america were everybody is middle class in these countries there a huge gap between rich and poor.theres the billionares and the ppl who live off less than 1 dallor a day.theres very little middle class
Divinely Brilliant! You are always so Inspiring and filled with so much light and heart! Looking forward to sharing the Ragas one day as well! Blessings~
i was wondering if they are so poor why do most, if not all, of the females wear gold bracelets? is it something that is passed down from generations to generation?
Those are cheap bracelets, but do indicate some income, but most of these kids they live under pieces of plastic!
Two of the kids with bracelets are daughters of a man who had a push cart selling bananas. He had a modest income. I made a deal with him: I gave him a Walkman and music tapes for his eight children to listen to; he would give me bananas each week to very gradually repay the debt. But he SOLD the Walkman and spent it all on BOOZE! He even lost the banana business. Sad but true.
Thank God there are men filled with hearts of kindness, love, and patience to give to others who are hurting, and need love so desperately. God Bless You!
Chetan, the little boy running in the street, got his first clothes some months later...a DRESS! He was so unaccustomed to wearing it; he innocently would lift it revealing his naked body. i saw him do this in front of a man at the market who said "No!". But a minute later Chetan lifted the dress again. This repeated several times! . These kids are poor, but we can learn about happiness from them, a gift of India's ancient culture perhaps.
Music has countless benefits & makes you forget for a while the pain that you are living in.. When we look at that, some say '' big deal it's only music '' but it's amazing how those kids are grateful for such small things..
Initially, I thought the same thing. But many of these kids continued on listening during a two year period with the same rapt attention. Even with those who were listening for the first time, it is clear to me that their interest in listening was for reasons beyond novelty. They were truly charmed by the music.
You mean a "boom box"? There was no lack of music blaring from speakers on the street. But that did not give the kids the same intimate experience of having the music directly inside their head, coming through the headphones. Once, a marching band passed by and the kids ignored it and clamored for the headphones instead.
You are trying to help them right ? Go get them some food go buy them houses go give them toys to play with not just a song ! they will actually look at those stuff and wonder what r they ! they know nothing they are children they dont need someone to bring ipod or something and play it to them ! they need love they need something will last forever they need happiness !! give them that and if u want to do something good do it in secret
This footage was shot in 1998. I wanted a memento of my very meaningful time spent with these kids. Plus I wanted to show the vast potential for bliss and happiness even in these most neglected kids. And I want someone to continue where I left off. And expand this 'til every kid has access to the bliss within. Yes, food, shelter and clothing are needed. But you are wrong about the music. It already has changed their lives. They have experienced the bliss within. That is more than some can say.
No offense Cb108, I know that you are trying to create a world for these poor children. But you can't change the things that revolve around them. Just by giving some headphones to them, wont help their lives. What difference will it make? Nothing. They need real things like food, shelter, and clothing. These kids will still live a life of poor street beggers. MUSIC WILL NOT CHANGE THEIR LIVES.
If you would like information about why i made this video, please click on the link to the upper right of the screen marked "more info". I made this primarily for myself as a recording of the very memorable experiences I had with these neighborhood children from 1997-2000. Later, I decided to edit it to make it presentable to others. When I get the time I will edit it further and add the music that the kids were actually listening to.
You try to live clean.. go now and try to live clean with millions of people homeless... Or try to help millions of people right now... come one.. you can't even help yourself so how can we help millions and millions of people.. WHERE DO WE GET THE CLEAN WATER!?
I hate how so many people still live in a world of fantasy, and you definitely live in a world of fantasy..
WAKE UP! This world is HARD to live in, stop lieing to yourself... its is NOT easy to help a country in a snap of a finger
cb108, i salute you sir...don't listen to morons like anonymous, they don't want to help the poor and they feel ashamed when a white guy helps the poor because of inferiority complex. do what you are doing sir...the western nations where all these indian whiners live are developed only because of a giving heart...keep it up!
the west may have a colonial past, but presently, i have met more good people in the west than in india, and that's why i moved here..congrats!
Lavakava... I can see how frustrated you are over this issue. I DO NOT feel ashamed when white or any coloured ppl provide help to poor (lOl). I just wanted to know the purpose of this video... is that to spread knowledge and awareness in the world that poverty exists...? or is it to make ppl wanna help these ppl. I personally think they are tryna make money by showing such things to ppl. I totally agree that Indian govt won't do s*** about poverty. We should all try to do summ about it..
I have no idea why these ppl are exploiting India? I mean I agree that poverty exists in India and I personally loved slumdog millionaire movie, but I really don't like the way ppl got so carried away with the poverty thing, and making such pathetic videos. If u really feel sorry for them, help them, provide them with clothes, feed them. Get off of ur butts and give them, instead of making money by exploiting! I am a student nurse, and my goal is to reduce diseases in this vulnerable population
erm....hw wld i gain money by 'exploiting' ppl?....sounds like a cool startup....u r a complete jerk....this man is better than what other ppl do in india....have you ever taken a child beggar to a hotel before?...have you bought clothes for them?....do that and i wld have deep respect for u
to be frank......most of the indians in their wildest dream wouldnt do anything this man is doing.....they feel ridiculd if they talk or be with slum ppl....and if someone does that, they think hes a fool and ridicule him.....its a very sad situation in india.....these children come in front of you and beg....and ppl give them a rupee to shoo them away....this mans a hero...
shit... did you see the litle naked baby ruining in the street , with the car comming at full spead... not even watchin!!! Imagine the same scene anywhere in the US!!!!
It is "Sindhi Bhairavi" by Ravi Shankar, from his album "The Sounds of India". All the music in this video and in the second part of the two-part film are listed at the end of the second part. Go to: The Real Slumdog Millionaire Kids-Part 2.
Where the hell do you see anyone laughing? I think this is one of the sadder things I've seen lately. There's poverty in America, but no naked babies dodging cars in the street.
Wow great job, and in the right direction - enlivening traiditional music for those who have lost it. The expressions of bliss on their faces tells the real story of cultural memory.
To listen to stories related to this project, go to CB108.blogspot (dot) com and listen to "Music for Untouchables", "Rag Picker's Daughter", "Good Intentions", and "Flower Children's Love-In".
I no longer live in India, but would encourage anyone desirous of spreading the joy of great music to children who would otherwise not have an opportunity to hear it, to do what they can to make the music available through headphones. It can be done for very, very little money.
During my four years living in Bangalore (I am from the USA) I discovered the tremendous love the local poor children had for music-- including classical Indian music, once they had the opportunity to listen to it on headphones. I would be surrounded by the kids all clamoring to listen to my headphones whenever I entered the street. So, I eventually hired a lady to make the music more available to the kids. As a result, many hundreds of poverty-level children got to listen to great music.
I am very happy to see the vidoe Harmony For the Homeless.

Have you come across any problems? Like people stealing the headphones or parents getting mad at you?
Chrismarr2 2 years ago 2
Amazingly, even with 20 or so kids at a time all clamoring to use one of the two headphones, they did not damage the delicate wires in three years time! Never any theft, not that there was really an opportunity. Once, when I was with a small goup of very young kids listening to the headphones, a man called out to me, with some aggressiveness: "What are they listening to?!" When I told him the name of one of India's most revered composers of spiritual music, he was very relieved and delighted!

No worries. The Indians are taking away your jobs in America, Europe etc. America is heavily in debt and your country is going down the drain. Get your pathetic ego trip while you can.. that'a all you have. ;)

Rather pathetic clip. It only shows that you get an ego trip slumming around poor children and filming it while closing your eyes for your blacks, homeless , trailer people and mexicans in your home country. 'Nice' person indeed.

@SodiumCyanide We are very spoiled & we're always thinking about what we lack instead what we have .
when you don't have any is a lot easier because you don't know what's like to live without & it's a lot easier

i was wondering if they are so poor why do most, if not all, of the females wear gold bracelets? is it something that is passed down from generations to generation?
triniopal 2 years ago
Those are cheap bracelets, but do indicate some income, but most of these kids they live under pieces of plastic!
Two of the kids with bracelets are daughters of a man who had a push cart selling bananas. He had a modest income. I made a deal with him: I gave him a Walkman and music tapes for his eight children to listen to; he would give me bananas each week to very gradually repay the debt. But he SOLD the Walkman and spent it all on BOOZE! He even lost the banana business. Sad but true.

They are beautiful children, why no clothes...
AmandasBetter 2 years ago
They are poor; no one seems to mind.

They have never used a a headphone... why do you think they are so impressed?...
linkladd 2 years ago
Initially, I thought the same thing. But many of these kids continued on listening during a two year period with the same rapt attention. Even with those who were listening for the first time, it is clear to me that their interest in listening was for reasons beyond novelty. They were truly charmed by the music.
cb108 2 years ago
was it impossible to have brought a battery powered stereo?
bronxmini 2 years ago
You mean a "boom box"? There was no lack of music blaring from speakers on the street. But that did not give the kids the same intimate experience of having the music directly inside their head, coming through the headphones. Once, a marching band passed by and the kids ignored it and clamored for the headphones instead.

Well at least he's actually doing something. This guy goes farther then dropping a 5 dollar bill in a donation box. They're making an effort ya know.
But I do agree that money should be more focused on food/shelter though, but music helps too. =)
akjg98 2 years ago
how right you are!!! but i believe that the music brings hapiness and these kids need a lot of it.
leromenipatousa 2 years ago
This footage was shot in 1998. I wanted a memento of my very meaningful time spent with these kids. Plus I wanted to show the vast potential for bliss and happiness even in these most neglected kids. And I want someone to continue where I left off. And expand this 'til every kid has access to the bliss within. Yes, food, shelter and clothing are needed. But you are wrong about the music. It already has changed their lives. They have experienced the bliss within. That is more than some can say.
cb108 2 years ago
how old is this video? When did you document it?
VteBarack08 2 years ago
No offense Cb108, I know that you are trying to create a world for these poor children. But you can't change the things that revolve around them. Just by giving some headphones to them, wont help their lives. What difference will it make? Nothing. They need real things like food, shelter, and clothing. These kids will still live a life of poor street beggers. MUSIC WILL NOT CHANGE THEIR LIVES.
VteBarack08 2 years ago
I disagree. Music enters the soul and allow it to dance. Inner is the basis of the outer. Feeling level is more important to life.

i wonder about how little people who say things like this have struggled.
bronxmini 2 years ago

Question. What caste are these folks and most others that are in the slums? Are they Untouchables? Shudras? Dalits? Harijans?

cb108, i salute you sir...don't listen to morons like anonymous, they don't want to help the poor and they feel ashamed when a white guy helps the poor because of inferiority complex. do what you are doing sir...the western nations where all these indian whiners live are developed only because of a giving heart...keep it up!
the west may have a colonial past, but presently, i have met more good people in the west than in india, and that's why i moved here..congrats!
lavakava 2 years ago
We should all try to do summ about it..
anonymous5600 2 years ago
I have no idea why these ppl are exploiting India? I mean I agree that poverty exists in India and I personally loved slumdog millionaire movie, but I really don't like the way ppl got so carried away with the poverty thing, and making such pathetic videos. If u really feel sorry for them, help them, provide them with clothes, feed them. Get off of ur butts and give them, instead of making money by exploiting! I am a student nurse, and my goal is to reduce diseases in this vulnerable population
anonymous5600 2 years ago 2
erm....hw wld i gain money by 'exploiting' ppl?....sounds like a cool startup....u r a complete jerk....this man is better than what other ppl do in india....have you ever taken a child beggar to a hotel before?...have you bought clothes for them?....do that and i wld have deep respect for u

to be frank......most of the indians in their wildest dream wouldnt do anything this man is doing.....they feel ridiculd if they talk or be with slum ppl....and if someone does that, they think hes a fool and ridicule him.....its a very sad situation in india.....these children come in front of you and beg....and ppl give them a rupee to shoo them away....this mans a hero...

I no longer live in India, but would encourage anyone desirous of spreading the joy of great music to children who would otherwise not have an opportunity to hear it, to do what they can to make the music available through headphones. It can be done for very, very little money.
cb108 3 years ago
During my four years living in Bangalore (I am from the USA) I discovered the tremendous love the local poor children had for music-- including classical Indian music, once they had the opportunity to listen to it on headphones. I would be surrounded by the kids all clamoring to listen to my headphones whenever I entered the street. So, I eventually hired a lady to make the music more available to the kids. As a result, many hundreds of poverty-level children got to listen to great music.
