Blecker stands on these abstract and subjective notions of justice, morality, duty, retribution, truth, etc. and I think this rhetoric clouds the debate in various ways. The sentence is of death, not suffering until death and I think this is a point of misunderstanding here. That is, death itself is the punishment for the crime, not torture. I'd be interested to read what Blecker has to say because my understanding as of now comes from second hand sources.
I can't believe that a professor of law would be caught saying in public that it's o.k. that an innocent person shpuld die if many guilty people are put to death.Anyone here heard of reuben cantu???
Robert Blecker was my criminal law professor last semester in law school. He is a genius and such a sophisticated lawyer. His arguments and perspectives on criminal law are unmatched.
I saw Robert Blecker speak last night. I've never seen a person that evil in real life. He is a sadist in the same way as an murderer. It's good that these views are out there, it's just hard to believe that he really believes his message because he seems so obviously contrarian. I do want to watch this doc, though.
Actually I've been looking more into him. His arguments are actually more sophisticated. I think he was deliberately baiting/getting a rise out of the audience last night and I don't think it entailed the nuances of his actual position.
Watch the doc. Look at the interplay between these two men. They both agree on the death penalty issue. Morality, god, these are the fundamental issues that are addressed here. Daryl Holton has been dead for three years now. He chose the electric chair.
See - twisting things around. Where did I ever state that what this killer did was ok? Do you seriously consider opposition to the DP as agreeing with murder? trying Pro DP manipulation tactics like "opposition to the DP = condoning murder".
aaaaaaaaaaah trying "talk down to "the enemy" tactics .. lol .. try "you hate murder victims if you oppose the DP" too - or: " you are opposed to justice if you oppose the DP" ...or just attack those that don't share your lynchmob hobby - lmfao
another frustrated housewife or viril lesbian cop with anger management issues who's only rays of light in life are bitching and getting off on executions while outing herself as quite un-intelligent by seeing murderer lovers in everyone who doesn't agree with executions. Get a life - or execute yourself .. lol
Mr. Blecker is not only in favour of death penalty but also against any chance of painless methods, like, p.e., nitrogen induced hypoxia. In a BBC/Horizon documentary about the subject of humane execution he told Michael Portillo that the convicted was due to suffer a painful execution as way of punishment. That's a totally irrational statement. The State should not behave as a psycopath.
@Elias1212 Based upon the same grounds you base your opinions on, but obviously for different reasons. This clown is a fanatic IMO, based on my perception and my own personal knowledege of the penal/ punishment system and what it does and does not do for societies. I'll kill in a heartbeat to protect myself or my family but the death penalty is a revenge system which is based on the Judeo Christian belief system which I think ought to be expelled from this planet, forcefully if need be.
I went to high school with Daryl and he was a good guy then. Funny and friendly. I even hung out at his house after school. I am not sure why he commited this horrific crime, butg he paid for it with his life in 2007
A terrible documentary, from whatever "side" of the issue you come--it is ultimately a boring, artless piece of work, a 1.5 hour semi paean to Blecker, an NYU lecture put on film. The trailer is the best part about it, at least the music is compelling...
Robert Blecker was my law professor in law school. He certainly made you question both the law, your pre-disposed notions of what is or should be criminal or not and the greater question of what do we as a society owe to those that becomes victims and those that become part of the criminal justice system. This looks interesting and very much Prof. Blecker as I remember him in the classroom.
Many people, faced with certainty over guilt, still don't want to stoop to that level and take a life. It certainly doesn't bring anyone back to life. Many people also feel it harms the souls of the people who decide to kill and actually have to kill.
I attended some of Blecker's crim law class many years ago. I even formally argued against the death penalty in his class. Every session he'd set up a debate on the subject. He expressed the desire back then to see criminals suffer in prison to pay the price for their crimes.
it a conservative point of view that holds that the state should never grow so big and powerful as to take the life of its citizens. Just like we have the right to guns due to this, we have a right to our lives.
Blecker was my criminal law prof. He is an AMAZING teacher, even if I don't understand his views. He is one of the most dedicated people I've ever encountered. CANNOT wait for this film.
gripping movie. Looks reall really good. By the way does anybody know if SNL made a spoff of this. Because Will Ferrel did a bit back in the late 90's that seems just like the main character. He even looked like the character in the opening part in the trailer, but anyway looks worth watching.
you hate america but you watch shows from there like heroes.....etc?............wtf if you really hated it you wouldn't support it by watching the programming >> idiot

Coming from someone who thinks that killing 4 children by shooting them in the back is ok, ill take that as a compliment.

More evil in him than someone who murdered his OWN 4 CHILDREN? Are you fn stupid? Dont answer that because its quite obvious you are.
