Phil Collins, what a guy. I loved his music ever since I was a child. I am 32 now and still loving every minute of it! Keep going Phil! Take some rest and see if your hands will heal and do a Classic 5 man Genesis Reunion one off deal, just once, and let us get it on DVD!!
Phil... Don't give up! I have CP and that limits me.. But I have to keep fighting... It was awesome to see you behind the old kit again.. YOU CAN DO IT.. KEEP IT UP.. (Crying) You are my hero and a hero to a lot of others,,,
standard fill 101 -- you nail everyone Phil ---- been playing since 64-65 ,,,,went to electronic pads about 15 years ago. I have to tape my sticks in my hands > for each studio/live gig these days ....Great music and wonderful performances on your latest ~!! Has that Bob Olhsson and Jamerson smoothness
Hey Phil...sounds great, feels great! Glad to see you frappin' and wrappin' around on them Remo's again! I years ago suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome while playing and practising, so I had to park my sticks down, and pick on the guitar for a while. Got back to playing a bit and it seems to have gone. All the best in your recovery, and on your new tour! Time indeed is a healer! Now, gee, where did I hear that before? All the best, JP Ottawa, Canada </=^ )
Congratulations Phil on making it as far has you have and we all hope you continue to progress with your recovery. I've been a long time fan the same as many here I'm sure.
He is already in better shape than i'll ever be -the degree he was reaching out at to adjust the I6's ?That would've put me in traction for two weeks -with narcotics !.you can he assured if Phil has adhered sound post op conditioning & therapy.he will return.when he feels it is wise.Expect a pronounced or little change in attack .BUT HEY ! i'd rather he be able to Effn walk
What you just witnessed here takes a lot more courage than he seems to be letting on. I had spinal surgery about the same time as Phil and mine has left me in a similar condition with my legs and feet and it's been really challenging to try to play again for me. After having a lot of proficiency on the instrument, it's really difficult to play with significant limitations suddenly imposed on you by physical challenges that may or may not ever resolve themselves. The guy's got a pair of big ones!
Phil don't give up playing those drums. You are still relevant ! As a drummer who has looked up to you for many years, I still learn from you. The courage that it took for you to overcome your injury and play on the new album no matter how painful, is simply amazing. This proves what you have always said, " I am a drummer first "
It's been a while since I have explored your music, but I just wanted to say that you have been one of the greatest music inspirations in my life. God bless you and I hope that you continue to inspire generations to come. Thank You Phil.

I play drums - also suffer from neck problems. Mine are from years of extreme sports, physical work/job, posture, heredity.. I have VAI. Having a hard time finding a Dr. who will address it. It's really scary when the blood stops going to your brain, your heart races to try to pump it up there, and you nearly pass out as your body prepares for death. Can't do anything anymore. It really is life changing. Looks like it isn't bothering him toooo much... good luck w/that Phil...
Phil, So glad you are back. Motown is the music of my youth, and it was wonderful to hear you redo the HDH hits. I look forward to seeing you on tour again in Los Angeles. Thank you.
How cool to see Phil practice to ape Stevie Wonder like so many of us have learned and practiced to ape his drumming over the years. Surreal in the coolest way. Thanks for sharing this very personal moment, Phil. You're still the most genuine musician out there. Bring on the new album!
You need to know that a whole world of people who loves your work and especially the man you are is pending every day of you and your music.
Seeing you playing again is such a fantastic news, but more importantly is seeing you enjoying your life with a different perspective now despite your personal issues. Believe me that seeing you happy, make us feel happy too.
Glad your back, love the music! Thanks for the inspiring us all with your music and for coming back after life threw some bumpy roads in your path to cross!
Yesssss! I knew Phil would sit on the stull behind his drum kit again. I agree that Phil hasn't been the same (emotionally) since his last divorce and I think things got worse when his back problem arouse. However, in this take I see he seems motivated to carry on. Good for you Phil, and for the millions of fans around the world who want to see you on the stage again.
Soooo glad to hear Phil playing again!! You can feel the joy from him even through the challenge as it got easier. Prayers answered, but it's one step at a time in coming back. I was at probably his last live show at Hollywood Bowl and I could see he was hurting. Of course, he was too much a trooper to affect any of the Genesis show and he and Chester were amazing as usual. Even in "drumming like a kid", noone plays drums like Phil. Can't wait for the new album.
What a great video. I hope you gradually get to where you were able to play drums all the time Your fills sound excellent. A '64 Ludwig kit....wow! Paiste of Zildjians? I bet Paiste, but I could be wrong!
My inspiration and the reason I started playing drums as a kid was watching Phil. This has made my day to see him back on the drums and doing what he is a master at... bringing music to the world.
Hey Phil.....great to see you behind the kit where you belong, and it certainly sounded nice despite the long layoff. It's like riding a bicycle, you never forget and you'll get back to virtuoso level quick enough, as your spine strengthens. Best of luck and thanks for ALL of the music.
I get the impression that Phil is in a dark place right now and has been for a few years. I think he has a broken heart. All my support and prayers go out to this amazing man. I will always love Phil Collins.
Hi @zazozung, Phil's reference to "his problem" relates to him slowly over his drumming career injuring his back. The injury he had required Surgery, his Vertebrae were crushing his Spinal Cord due to the position he has played the drums in for the last 50 years and was making it very painful for him even to hold his drum sticks.
@ALI090989 I'm aware of Phil's physical issues but it also seems to me that he hasn't been the same since his last divorce. I've noticed it in interviews. I also observed a very different Phil Collins at the last Genesis concert. He was fantastic as usual, but his heart just didn't seem in it. Of course this is just my opinion. Perhaps he is simply having major back pain which would sour anyone's mood.
AMAZING! My greatest respect to the Master drummer who is living his art no matter what! Hopefully all the healing energy sent to you is helping a little bit in your hands getting better! Proud to be a "Phil fan" !
Phil mate, I really felt for you seeing that. HUGE respect to you for getting back behind the drums and I hope you're continuing to mend. You are a drumming - and music - legend. Huge love and respect to you.
Hey Phil I heard you had a back problem. You need to get a better drum throne like a Roc N soc or saddle type with a backrest , because that throne you're using puts too much pressure on your spine and can lead to all kinds of problems. Ther's no back or thigh support on what you're using. It definetly helped my back.
So great to see Phil drumming again, but having worked with Phil and seen him at perhaps his peak, this is very hard for me to watch....I can't begin to imagine just how tough this was for him. :0(
oh man that makes me really happy. Ive been playing drums for a while and could not live without it. and that phil is now able to play again is so amazing.
I learned to play drums by watching videos and buying cassettes of Phil Collins, Genesis, and Brand X, and anyone else he played with. That was 25 years ago. I'll be 39 next month and I just bought my first drum kit (Gretsch by the way). It's a beautiful thing to see Phil holding drumsticks again, even with them taped to his hand. Love you Mr. Collins. Thanks for all the years of inspiration you've brought to me. You're the reason I play music full-time. I'm living my dream.
