  • I am completely mesmerized. I love the generations singing. As much as I have read in the posts here, this is not at all, all about John, though wonderful he, indeed, is. The more I listen, the more I hear each singer’s character entering and leaving and entering again. The performance is not the typical showstopper. The audience does not go wild with approval. I think there is a reason why. Haunting.

  • i love this rendition. Great ensemble arrangements, great vocals, great emotions.

  • 1:21 - 1:37 - that is one manly breath.

    This is BEAUTIFUL.

  • @VengefulKBM Breath support! It's a wonderful thing!

  • John, Ruthie and Carol are sooo fantastic at LIFE! I want to be their friends, we could be singing partners :) This literally brings me to tears! :') xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Check out Ernest Kohl's remix of this... that's why I found you via his dance track version.. it's quite clever. He's been doing this a long time and he's VERY broadway himself. Fun to hear variations on this.

  • Balki can sing!

  • @xMyWorld I know! its so sweet! def tears not sweat, cause its coming from both eyes!

  • I do so love George Hearn. Love is early stuff, love his contemporary work.

  • 0:50 .. Ruthie's high note is my favorite part. It's sooo beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. And John's very clear.

  • I've only ever heard John's ambiticious version on his CD but when all of these guys sing it - it's so sad, and sweet and beautiful and gentle!

  • I teared up after George's first line...FANTASTIC!!!! I love all of them, but George's voice just has an emotion too it that BLOWS ME AWAY

  • What a terrific arrangement of this beautiful song!

  • When was this... John looks so young!

  • @culticmusicfan

    1999

  • @culticmusicfan 1998

  • Gosh, John is sings so clear, it's beautiful. That was great!

  • Does anybody know if sheet music for this arrangement exists?

  • Damn, John Barrowman's a beautiful man.

  • John Barrowman, Ruthie Henshall and George Hearn are the best!

    i loveee them!

  • *tears pouring*

this is inspiring and brilliant, I love it. George Hearn is amazing, I love him so so so much <3 <3 <3. This is a perfect cast.

  • Love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's glorious work, with such superb actor/singers. My favourite musical of all time!

  • this particular one is from merrily we roll along which used the song from company, but this is the same format.

  • Why do they *never* sing the entire song? ::sigh::

  • Tears running down my face...

  • okay, maybe this has been asked many times but isn't the name of this musical "Company"?

  • Its *from* COMPANY, but this is PUTTING IT TOGETHER.

  • i'd never heard this before, and now i love the song. it's beautiful, and they sing it with such emotion.

  • why are they all singing this instead of just bobby?

  • Do you all see that? Bronson Pinchot is crying at 2.28!

    Aww!

  • @xMyWorld I know it broke my heart! Its my favorite part of the whole show.

  • @xMyWorld that may just be sweat...

those stage lights get mighty hot!

  • this sends shivers down my spine! i can only repeat, the merging of their voices is just so incredible!

  • Excellent performance!! It's amazing how so many different type of voices are merging so well.

  • Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! I love this song! Thank You John, Carol, Ruthie, Bronson and George! This song is so true of soooooo much of my life! Thank you so much for posting x x x

  • is that Balkie from Perfect Strangers? And Serge from Beverly Hills Cop? I LOVE that guy!

  • Glorious combination of singers in one of the most beautiful songs ever.

  • where's the beat?!

  • George Hern! Ruthie Henshall! John Barrowman! Carol Burnett! thats just an all star cast...love this, and Bronson shows so much emotions. he actually cries.

    <3

  • i think that more coz it's one off there last shows and the chance of them all performing together again is slim also only with a cast of 5 you make such i tight (what i call) theatre family

  • Yes, in the show she feels dead because she has been left.

  • spectacular arrangement for four voices.

  • this song i soo beautiful i cry every time i hear it *wipes away tears*

  • and if you watch the actual dvd, you can see that bronson is clearly crying at the end. so sweet. I love him!

  • John Barrowman & Ruthie Henshall are brilliant!

John has the most beautiful voice but has a really strong sound also, and Ruthie's voice is so strong!

  • You have to hear Johnny Rotten doing this! It's priceless! So off the wall I actually think Steven Sondheim would love it

  • He is perfectly in tune.

  • i love the song, but in the perspective of the play, i think the song is meant to be sung by bobby alone...i mean thats what the whole play is about, and it all builds to this one point for bobby, and i think you lose some depth of character if you share it with all these different characters

  • I understand and respect your opinion. In the context of a review (as opposed to a "Company") production, however, this version works for me. I find it quite moving.

  • i agree with bth, in cncert this is brilliant, but in the show its best as it is

  • It's not in Company in this version, Its from the Sondheim tribute "Putting it Together" so In the context of THAT storyline it does fit. I do agree that in Company it should be different though.

  • I like how this works split up between different characters. I quite like this version.

  • Overall it is WONDERFUL!

  • I didn't know John Barrowman had such a beautiful voice...

  • i was thinking the same thing... where did that come from

  • He is amazing. He was in musical theatre long before Doctor Who - has been there for just over two decades now I think (About that anyway)

He's wonderful. You're right about that.

  • Ruthie is the class in this act! Granted it is a very strong cast, but she just lifts it, and you can see them respond to that.

  • john has an amazing voice, i was really surprised by how good he actually is

  • John has an amazing voice, he has so much talent.

  • Some people say John doesn't have the bset voice but I feel like when he comes in, it's the most beautiful sound of the bunch.

  • Anyone know if this can be bought? I'd love to have a DVD of this.

  • yes, there is a DVD out called "Putting It Together" it's very nice

  • You can get it on amazon for £7.59 or $12.00 thats where i got it from

  • I swear..I think if he was butt ugly..nobody would care! LOL

  • All the singers are great in this but i gotta say i have a soft spot for the amazing mr barrowman. His voice is spot on. Must be a talented fella to sing them long drawn out words in one breath. good control. Thanks for putting this on here.

  • Are you sure it's not just because he's so handsome?

  • LOL, I would be lying if i said that his beauty wasnt a factor! Yet even if he was butt ugly i'd still have said what i did. The fact is Barrowman is an amazing singer and, to me, he truely stands out in this performance.

  • Ahh, now. Same. He is amazing.

  • Agreed.

  • Maybe someone will revive the musical "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman" on Broadway and cast him as the big guy.

  • HOW SO VERY BEAUTIFUL!!

  • Is that REALLY Bronson Pinchot??? WOW!

who KNEW he could SING?! Bully for him!

  • Wow....Just Wow.....This is amazing

  • thanks for posting i LOVE John Barrowman!

  • Best version out there is Michael Crawfords on his "With Love" album. This ain't bad though.

  • good cast

  • john is hot!!!!

  • Agreed, and I'm straight. It's obvious people!

    SEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXYSEXY!!!

  • what play is this?

  • Stephen Sonheim's COMPANY :)

  • thank you! I thought it was similar to that I just couldn't think of it's name!

  • Actually, while the song is from Company, this clip is from Putting it Together, a revue of Sondheim's work. This is one of my favorite arrangements of the song, though I prefer the performance on the Off-Broadway cast recording.

  • There's an off-b'way cast recording? I have the one with Raul Esparza, and I know there was an original with Elaine Stritch, but I had no clue there was another

  • This isn't Company. This is the Broadway cast of Putting it Together starring Carol Burnett. I prefer the performance of this song on the off-Broadway recording of Putting it Together starring Julie Andrews.

  • You can really hear Ruthie and John's voices when they all sing together. They both have fantastic voices.

  • the fellow in blue was absolutely brilliant.

  • Sounds like George Hearn

  • Bronson Slipped up in the song

  • I believe it was what we in the business call an acting choice there friend.

  • huh?

  • JB is brilliant in this. He's a fantastic singer. I love Ruthie too. She is so talented. John Barrowman and Ruthie Henshall are the best leading couple ever in the West End.

  • wow this took me forever to find out that this was a rewiew. for the longest time i thought it was company then questioned that when i saw they only had 2 girls

  • I didn't know John Barrowman and Bronson Pinchot could sing!!! What a great video... thanks so much for sharing this! :) (adding to my faves right now)

  • I rented this and watched this thinking it was going to be a pleasure ride. I was wrong. This show touched on many sad, hard truths about love relationships and it was hard to watch after awhile. This show is edgy and brilliant and really showcases Sondheim's remarkable songs.

And yeah, JB was so gorgeous in this!

  • I love Ruthie soo much

    xx

  • who is the guy in the blue waistcoat?

  • Bronson Pinchot. Check his imdb.

  • wow! that's a great arrangement of the song!! beautiful!

  • This is so beautiful-so tranquil! i luv it !

  • JB just looks so beautiful, his performance on stage in Company is even more stunning!

  • That was absolutely incredible. Thanks for uploading.

  • so touching and great! thanks for uploading

  • Is that Balky?

  • God I love JB singing this

  • Who's responsible for the brilliant arrangement?

  • really good quality, tnx for uploading
