Is ook zo, ik hoorde en las in een museum dat de vikingen friezen meenamen op de boot, en de friezen de taal overnamen, kijk maar es naar het deens, 40 % van de woorden misschien wel meer lijkt heeeel erg op het fries.
As an English speaker, if I pay very close attention and listen to it maybe two or three times, I understand what's going on in the song at least 50%. Nice song!
I use a strange approach, where I read or listen to it as if I were reading or listening to English, figure out what English word it's closest to, and then look at the context and decide on the meaning. I use a similar approach to when I'm reading Chaucer. It's because of that that I have an easy time understanding Middle English, Scots, and Frisian, but a tough time learning new languages (I consider Frisian, English, and Scots to be all one large language).
This is no surprise since Friesian is one of the mothers of that young language called English. When you look at the Old English this can be seen much more easily.
That is true, Old English is actually readable with modern lettering. What makes Old English unintelligible is the runic lettering system. But what's interesting is that Frisian underwent some similar language changes until about the 1500s.

that's very cool! The only words that are pretty much identical are in the first sentence; "butter, bread and cheese"
