Mobile phones can transmit up to 2 watts of power in order to reach distant cells & it's a cellular network by design from day one for movement. I can't see wimax ever replacing such a network. Hope 4G comes to Australia soon.. Telstra are biggest and best Teleco has just been pimping 3G and I don't think they can pimp any further... Next year Telstra plans to pimp NextG to 84Mbits/s I think it is.. Currently theirs just 7.2Mbits/s and 21Mbits/s base connections and they also have 42Mbit/s in some areas combing to channels to get that speed.. Actually - Wimax is a MASS wireless deployment of "broadband". While cable/DSL are much better in terms of latency, Wimax is AWESOME for those people living in rural areas who cannot obtain Cable/DSL. Wimax will not replace cable for most people's homes, but will (I think) benefit very rural areas.
I'm using XOHM/WiMax right now, had it for the last few months. It's fantastic, the bandwidth is great, just did a speed test and got 6186kb/s down and 2747kb/s up. I even get low enough pings for gaming (like consistently less than 50). It's really unbelievable for a wireless service. I used to have EVDO a 3G wireless service but this blows it away by a mile. Faster than cable modems I have had in the past even.

a wireless antenna should be setup high in order to get wimax.... and mostly the range is within 1 or 2km around(sometimes lower than that) the more you go far away from it the less signal you get.... but this is a amazing technology and it's like broadband internet.... u can get wimax from a service provider... but most places are not available... :)

Wimax is mobile for sure, but putting this into cars with retarded drivers is a BAD idea.
I really don't want to broadcast where i'm driving around either. Hope they put an off switch.

the reason to demonstrate in a car is to show that the speeds stay fast even while not stationary. a fast speed sitting at a desk is nothing more than a "hot spot" or wi-fi.
some applications for cars would be do deliver streaming video from a delivery truck or police car with very high quality, not so much for watching tv while you are driving. i agree that would be dangerous.
imagine having faster speeds on your phone than you get from a cable modem! i can't wait!!!

Actually - Wimax is a MASS wireless deployment of "broadband". While cable/DSL are much better in terms of latency, Wimax is AWESOME for those people living in rural areas who cannot obtain Cable/DSL. Wimax will not replace cable for most people's homes, but will (I think) benefit very rural areas.

I'm using XOHM/WiMax right now, had it for the last few months. It's fantastic, the bandwidth is great, just did a speed test and got 6186kb/s down and 2747kb/s up. I even get low enough pings for gaming (like consistently less than 50). It's really unbelievable for a wireless service. I used to have EVDO a 3G wireless service but this blows it away by a mile. Faster than cable modems I have had in the past even.

a wireless antenna should be setup high in order to get wimax.... and mostly the range is within 1 or 2km around(sometimes lower than that) the more you go far away from it the less signal you get.... but this is a amazing technology and it's like broadband internet.... u can get wimax from a service provider... but most places are not available... :)

OK so it's not cellular - and by "cellular" I mean you can be downloading something (huge) near one tower/router/transceiver/centralpoint, travel as far as that signal will transmit till I get to another tower/router/transceiver/centralpoint, and the other tower/whatever will take over my connection seamlessly without any signal drop so my download never pauses or stops?

I thought the same thing as soon as he said your car can be tracked with GPS anywhere and it has webcams on it. They're also working on a technology in new cars where they can disable your car remotely. Then you'll have police shutting down young pretty girl's cars on back roads in the country... Plus if a terrorist gets ahold of the code they could shut down all vehicles in an entire city. Some parts of the future are looking cool, but some are downright scary.
