France- and this is from 1,000 years of experience in Anglo-French relations- are fickle. Traditionally US Presidents have been kind to the UK, and for that we are grateful. Under UK law Prime Ministers can keep gifts given to them by other heads of state but only if they pay the full value. Tony Blair chose to buy the gifts from Bush from the government but Gordon Brown chose to "reject" the opportunity of buying them instead leaving them to the nation. He did this with every gift from every head of state as his policy was not to keep them for himself.
