Is there a DVD uncut release of this film? I own the Vipco 25th Anniversary edition but it has nearly 15 minutes of cuts with all of the animal cruelty and mutilation taken out.
Netflix had the Cannibal Holocaust I rented it. It was good, Bizzar, a movie like this is not for everyone but a must see. I was surprised Neflix had it. I have seen a lot of these type movies, you either like them or hate them. I liked this it looked real and will shock you.
I'm 14 and I just finished off watching A Serbian Film, is this film as good as A Serbian Film? I've also seen Salo, but does Cannibal Holocaust live up to these films?
@Standring07031997 no one gives a shit if you're 14, why do you feel the need to say? Do you think it makes you seem cool because you think 14 is a young age to watch a gory film? Get over yourself haha
I'm so glad you gave this a high mark, with all the controversy attached to it, i thort ther was sumthing wrong wit me for liking it. To me the interesting story and realistic feel out weighed the gore. Films like saw jus trys to shock u but this really felt like this had a point

@cidXsherra na,only the animal deaths were real.when the director and producer were brought before a judge on charges of murdering one of the actors, they simply adjourned the case and brought the actor in question to the court on the next occasion.
@PAULUKMUSIC The scene had no sound after the initial blow other than the music score so you didn't hear anything other than the initial machete strike. There were no sounds from the turtle. @PAULUKMUSIC The cow from the burger you munchin on now probably made a worse noise lol. They got A LOT of shit for doing that, I mean a lot of shit to the point that the director wishes he never killed real animals.
something you didn't mention was the great usage of music. The theme song used throughout the film went from being nice & calm to being horrifying, to being depressing, just by the scenes in which it played.
@Doperwtje81 That is a fair point. I often have a blind spot for sound/soundtrack unless something hits me for some reason. An insightful and thoughtful review. Although I have heard Deodato state that he simply wanted to make a fill showing cannibals, from the score to the acting it truly seems like a great film.
@Danac993 no he just made them sign a thing and sent them off for a year long vacation to make them look like they died. people started freaking out so he called the actors and brought them back to court and showed that he didnt really kill them.
@Danac993 No, but so many people thought he did that he went on trial for murder, only for the charges to be dropped when the cast turned up in court!
If anyone is wondering about the impaled cannibal girl on the stick, it's proven that she is sitting on a bike seat, using a pole as a base, with her holding a stick on her mouth.
The animal killings were not needed, but people forget that animals were killed on screen in Jean-Luc Goddard's Weekend... and they were shown on BBC 2 in 1995!! Therefore with the BBFC Weekend animal killings..ok, but Cannibal movie animal killings...nope!
@Danac993 ruggero deodato? where did u hear that? and... are you really that gullible? maybe you should check out the 'flower of flesh and blood' 'documentary'.... lol
So many reviews i see about this film just say, "Theres a film crew filming cannibals, they get eaten....................."
But this really gets to the core of the film, now i wont say its a gggreat film, but it should be given credit where credits due.
It kinda reminds me of the Warhol silkscreen of a car crash, repeated, and repeated hundreds of times. To show how we are being bombarded by tv, the news, and the media at large.
thank you very much for this review. u did a very splended job on summarizing it without spoling the entire film. plus, i love ur statement of how they actually had to kill animals in order to make this movie. really appreciate it
@MrSnoopybunny20 i know right? they take tyhe time to make it the deaths seems real, but they wanna save money and time when it comes to the animal victums. btw, i take ur an animal lover, too?
@MrSnoopybunny20 The crew and cast ate the turtle after (as happened with most of the animal kills), it was food and was actually killed quite cleanly. I was 6 months out which realistically makes no difference to the review and that was a result of one word being wrong (I said made instead of released). I'm sorry this offended you so much, though if that's the worst you can find then I'm frankly quite happy.
@SnuffHunter1 go nuts ;0) Most of the review is opinion rather than solid fact (thats film criticism to a great extent after all) maybe you'll like the review despite the faux pas at 30 seconds.
The natives ate most the animals killed in the film, so whats the problem? Its basically documenting their hunting habits and do go and tell me that hunting is animal cruelty. I love animals but I'll hunt and eat deer, its a natural part of life.
Hmmm, do the crew get killed by the tribe, and do they get eaten? or is it all mainly animals..... if they get eaten im happy, the tribe is hungry, and they are the intruders, nuf said :)
Ok, I know that this may sound crazy, but our world has much bigger problems than worrying about animal cruelty. I'm not saying its not wrong, I'm just saying that I just saw holocaust pictures and it reminded me of of fucked up our world really is. Lets solve the HUMAN cruelty part first. Then we can worry about the other stuff.
While I certainly don't agree with animal cruelty and/or killing, it's funny how people and courts can decide the things done in this film are unacceptable while things like battery hens and the likes are alright. Countrys are drawing the line at a completely unreasonable point. Looking at the things which were perfectly legal to do in Italy in 1980 I refuse to critisize the director and film crew, or rather, I refuse to say they deserved a sentence.
if animal killing upsets people what the fuck are they doing here? the word "cannibal" in the title is a bit of give away!!! so fuck off and watch disney or saw XII in 4D you tree hugging vegetarian mongoloids!
@leej70 Cannibal eat people, not kill animals. I don't partake in either activity, but I think either would be perfectly fine to portray if they just used special effects.
And you don't have to be a "treehugger" to love animals. Sympathy doesn't make one a pussy, it just means they're human.
@Flea817 Cannibals don't kill animals? Where did you get this information? Anyway i was refering to the fact that cannibal films are synonymous with real animal killings, especially this one.
I don't believe in Imperialism and I don't believe in survival of the fittest, because I'm not a total barbarian and thankfully neither is the rest of the population, or survival of the fittest would probably hold a lot more water.
@Flea817 Not believing in survival of the fittest is like not believing in trees or elbows, ever heard of logic or common sense? Take your blinkers off and take a look around you
@leej70 I believe in survival in the fittest as an idea that shouldn't be implemented if we ever want peace. Not as an actual global happening, thank God. You're probably not the fittest in the world, it's safe to assume. So if you wanna' preach the idea you're preaching your own demise.
@Flea817 Blinkers are good for turning? what the hell are you talking about? maybe so but if you took them off you'd see more, and as for world peace....well good luck with that.
It wasn't animal cruelty. I go hunting, I kill animals for food. Animals get killed everyday for that purpose. What do you think hamburgers are made out of?
Hi Lampyman, the scenes of a previous documentary aren't real. It's scripted in the film that they paid the troops to act out the scenes for their documentary. At aroud 46 minutes in, she says "Well, just to give you an idea of how Alan and the others work... everything you just saw was a put on, that was no enemy army approaching, Alan paid those soldiers to do a bit of acting for them."
Or, are you saying that they might state this in the film but it's actually some real archive footage?
@tyrone199 The 'Last Road' footage is genuine stock footage shot for a documentary (on Idi Amin I believe) but in the films story it's claimed it's the work of Yates and Co.
It actually does feature real firing squads at work and war victims but of course was not filmed by or for Deodatto, he just borrowed it from a library essentially. It's always struck me as odd that that footage (which is genuine) featuring the deaths of people rarely raises an eyebrow.
The amount of animal killings and blood and gore thats in this movie is frankly unecessary most of the time but other than that its a pretty clever film and it certainly catches the uncertain creepyness of the amazon jungle. I hate the cheesey film music it has though, really pisses me off lol
how do we know that any of it is fake. There were no controls at all back there. Especially for the Indigenous. There are ways of doing realism without doing snuff films.
@braveandtall well Perry Pirkanen (as Jack Anders the cameraman of the lost filmmaker group) was in another film less than a year later and Gabriel Yorke ( was interviewed for the dvd extras a few years ago and the actors were all trotted out on a talk show to prove they were still alive. Other than the animal deaths this is not reality.
@Alexeriks1 In the movie, they actually killed the animals to make it more realistic. That's animal cruelty.
What makes you think people's brain wont work a 100% ?
The reason why its different to eat a plant and an animal is that the animal has a heart and a brain and it knows when its about to be killed, and i'm sure they are not happy at that moment. It's sickens to me eat something that I see walking around like any other animals that are domesticated.
Could you please take this to another forum or PM's please. My inbox is getting filled with this stuff every time you make a comment and it's not really relevent to the video.
Are you a vegetarian? Btw, while I don't oppose killing animal for FOOD. I do however find slaughtering animals for leisure purposes(e.g This Film) appalling and barbaric. But yea, if I do see animals getting killed in that obnoxious fashion then I wouldn't want to eat it at all.
@marshall9doom No I am not a vegetarian, as I stated in my first comment. I am fully aware of how hypocritical I must sound, but I still stand by what I say considering I know many people who are and Im trying to be as well. But my whole point from the beginning was that animals should not be killed for "leisure purposes" as you stated.
@Alexeriks1 Yes I know about the spider thing, lol, but that does not effect our diets. All Im saying is there are people out there who survive without meat. And there is no denying that. . It's possible to get omega 3 from things like canola oil, tofu, soybeans, and walnuts. Same with other nutrients, they are possible to obtain from things that are not related to animals. My whole point from the beginning was simply that people should not kill animals for fun..animal cruelty is wrong.
@Alexeriks1 There are plenty of people who are living on a vegan diet. There is no proof that people get extremely sick if they don't eat meat. Maybe those who have been strictly non-veg for a long time try and alter their diet and be vegetarians would have problems. But other than that I see no sickness being caused by not eating meat.
@Alexeriks1 Psssst. It's a good idea to have at least a vague concept of what you're talking about before making an argument.
Plenty of doctors and nutritionists support vegetarianism (if done correctly.) A good vegetarian checks the ingredients on everything they eat, and believe it or not, not everyone needs jello and gummies and junk like that. And as for the soap, lolwut? Animal fat hasn't been used in most mainstream soap brands for decades, and besides, I use all vegetable oil-based soap.
if they wouldve faked the animal death scenes i might have watched it but since those scenes are real i wont even give this movie my time much less my money
@Alexeriks1 Although I don't agree with you, being a non-vegetarian myself I have no right to judge anyone..I still have to say that killing them for fun and animal cruelty is still very wrong. "all humans will die" if we stop killing animals is no reason to just kill them for amusement.
@TheZunigal It wasn't for entertainment though, it was for effect. Its not any different than what happens in civilized society, the animals were killed and eaten.
The might be the first and last time I hear the names "Roland Barthes" and "Cannibal Holocaust" spoken in the same sentence. Have thoroughly enjoyed your "Nasties" reviews. You offer considerable insight into exploitation films.

I tend to just skip the animal kill scenes now that I have watched a handful of the Cannibal genre films. You just know it's coming and ff.
In regards to the film itself I thought it was a cool movie. Great plot and and first half with the anthropologist and the guides were great.
The footage of the scumbag early crew seemed forced. And the acting didn't really feel natural.
Cool critique Lampy. As always. And I'm very happy to see the views explode in number from last I watched these. :)

lampyman101 1 year ago
The natives ate most the animals killed in the film, so whats the problem? Its basically documenting their hunting habits and do go and tell me that hunting is animal cruelty. I love animals but I'll hunt and eat deer, its a natural part of life.
everseekingeyes 1 year ago
Hmmm, do the crew get killed by the tribe, and do they get eaten? or is it all mainly animals..... if they get eaten im happy, the tribe is hungry, and they are the intruders, nuf said :)
Good review xx

@shinfield13 Nope only the animals were killed and other violence were staged

Ok, I know that this may sound crazy, but our world has much bigger problems than worrying about animal cruelty. I'm not saying its not wrong, I'm just saying that I just saw holocaust pictures and it reminded me of of fucked up our world really is. Lets solve the HUMAN cruelty part first. Then we can worry about the other stuff.

While I certainly don't agree with animal cruelty and/or killing, it's funny how people and courts can decide the things done in this film are unacceptable while things like battery hens and the likes are alright. Countrys are drawing the line at a completely unreasonable point. Looking at the things which were perfectly legal to do in Italy in 1980 I refuse to critisize the director and film crew, or rather, I refuse to say they deserved a sentence.

if animal killing upsets people what the fuck are they doing here? the word "cannibal" in the title is a bit of give away!!! so fuck off and watch disney or saw XII in 4D you tree hugging vegetarian mongoloids!
leej70 1 year ago
@leej70 Cannibal eat people, not kill animals. I don't partake in either activity, but I think either would be perfectly fine to portray if they just used special effects.
And you don't have to be a "treehugger" to love animals. Sympathy doesn't make one a pussy, it just means they're human.
Flea817 1 year ago
@Flea817 Cannibals don't kill animals? Where did you get this information? Anyway i was refering to the fact that cannibal films are synonymous with real animal killings, especially this one.
leej70 1 year ago
@leej70 SOME do. And even if these were those sorts of cannibals, they could've easily faked deaths.
Flea817 1 year ago
@Flea817 It might be easy to fake 'em but it's a lot easier to just kill 'em, survival of the fittest mate, deal with it
leej70 1 year ago
@leej70 If you have no depth of conscience.
I don't believe in Imperialism and I don't believe in survival of the fittest, because I'm not a total barbarian and thankfully neither is the rest of the population, or survival of the fittest would probably hold a lot more water.
Flea817 1 year ago
@Flea817 Not believing in survival of the fittest is like not believing in trees or elbows, ever heard of logic or common sense? Take your blinkers off and take a look around you
leej70 1 year ago
@leej70 I believe in survival in the fittest as an idea that shouldn't be implemented if we ever want peace. Not as an actual global happening, thank God. You're probably not the fittest in the world, it's safe to assume. So if you wanna' preach the idea you're preaching your own demise.
And blinkers are good for turning.
Flea817 1 year ago
@Flea817 Blinkers are good for turning? what the hell are you talking about? maybe so but if you took them off you'd see more, and as for world peace....well good luck with that.

It wasn't animal cruelty. I go hunting, I kill animals for food. Animals get killed everyday for that purpose. What do you think hamburgers are made out of?
Lukash636 1 year ago
@Lukash636 The killed actual animals for the film's effects. Not for actual food.

Or, are you saying that they might state this in the film but it's actually some real archive footage?
tyrone199 1 year ago

MegaFluffyPlatypus 1 year ago
This movie is NOT bad, it is very very, well done, especially in the way that the message is shown in such a very well done.

how do we know that any of it is fake. There were no controls at all back there. Especially for the Indigenous. There are ways of doing realism without doing snuff films.
braveandtall 1 year ago
@braveandtall well Perry Pirkanen (as Jack Anders the cameraman of the lost filmmaker group) was in another film less than a year later and Gabriel Yorke ( was interviewed for the dvd extras a few years ago and the actors were all trotted out on a talk show to prove they were still alive. Other than the animal deaths this is not reality.

I haven't seen this, do you think it's as disturbing as A Serbian Film?
Killoutoflove 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 In the movie, they actually killed the animals to make it more realistic. That's animal cruelty.
What makes you think people's brain wont work a 100% ?
The reason why its different to eat a plant and an animal is that the animal has a heart and a brain and it knows when its about to be killed, and i'm sure they are not happy at that moment. It's sickens to me eat something that I see walking around like any other animals that are domesticated.

Are you a vegetarian? Btw, while I don't oppose killing animal for FOOD. I do however find slaughtering animals for leisure purposes(e.g This Film) appalling and barbaric. But yea, if I do see animals getting killed in that obnoxious fashion then I wouldn't want to eat it at all.
marshall9doom 1 year ago

My whole point from the beginning was simply that people should not kill animals for fun..animal cruelty is wrong.
iloveuburr 1 year ago
I just watched the movie... I really wasn't disturbed by it at all.
I guess I'm one sick fuck.
MitchisMyBestFriend 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 There are plenty of people who are living on a vegan diet. There is no proof that people get extremely sick if they don't eat meat. Maybe those who have been strictly non-veg for a long time try and alter their diet and be vegetarians would have problems. But other than that I see no sickness being caused by not eating meat.
iloveuburr 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1
You're providing no evidence whatsoever as to why you need meat to survive. What makes you more qualified than doctors and nutritionists?
phillydogger 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1The point is that less animals are being killed...which is like i said, better than nothing.
I don't think it's wrong for a lion to kill a zebra, but I don't think its "good" either. Lions need the meat, they are carnivores.
We don't NEED meet, we've just been eating it for so long that we are used to it, people can survive on a strictly vegetarian diet.
If humans aren't better than other animals then what gives us the right to eat them? exactly, we don't have the any right.
iloveuburr 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 Psssst. It's a good idea to have at least a vague concept of what you're talking about before making an argument.
Plenty of doctors and nutritionists support vegetarianism (if done correctly.) A good vegetarian checks the ingredients on everything they eat, and believe it or not, not everyone needs jello and gummies and junk like that. And as for the soap, lolwut? Animal fat hasn't been used in most mainstream soap brands for decades, and besides, I use all vegetable oil-based soap.
phillydogger 1 year ago
if they wouldve faked the animal death scenes i might have watched it but since those scenes are real i wont even give this movie my time much less my money
drhbettathanu 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 If a person refuses to eat animals, they are still reducing the amount of animals being killed, better than nothing.
iloveuburr 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 plenty of people survive on an all-vegan diet. so i don't see how what u say is a fact.

that woman on a stake is fake she was sitting on a bicle seat
comedybenj 1 year ago
@Alexeriks1 Although I don't agree with you, being a non-vegetarian myself I have no right to judge anyone..I still have to say that killing them for fun and animal cruelty is still very wrong. "all humans will die" if we stop killing animals is no reason to just kill them for amusement.

@TheZunigal It wasn't for entertainment though, it was for effect. Its not any different than what happens in civilized society, the animals were killed and eaten.
