I'm Japanese. For me, it's very natural that they translated "Don-mono" into "bowl of rice with something" because I can't think of any other suitable translations. Let me point out that Don-mono is a general term for bowl of rice + many kinds of ingredients like beef, pork, tempra etc. So If you want to eat Don-mono in Japanese restaurant, you have to specify the ingredient on the rice .
