    It came from when I had only one tiny tomato to use and needed as much of it diced as possible - then the light bulb went on and I wondered why I didn't ALWAYS do this!

    I often amaze myself with the things I'd not bothered to think of before! It's kind of humbling! (o:

  • after I order a hamburger at McD's drive thru & proceed to the next window I always ask for onion

    normally they are in a hurry so they scoop it into a little cup with lid & drop it in the sack

    pretty cool because it's normally several tablespoons

    & it gets tossed into the freezer soup LOL

    & just yesterday

    after cheeseballs I had quite a lot of ranch dressing left so I asked for a little container

    I'll use it today w fish sticks!

    why shouldn't I have it ? I paid for it ...

  • @OzarkdArc ~ Good point. Taking home things to reuse and help stretch the home grocery bill is a bonus to the occasional eating out excursion.

Don't feel bad, it didn't occur to me for the longest time...and others always give me ideas....like the one just before yours about adding the ends to soup stock (they did go to the compost bin, but some in soup stock - with those annoying celery leaves sounds great!)

  • @OzarkdArc - WOW! This is an idea - I will add some to the veggie stock jar (have onion ends, carrott ends, celery leaves - which I hate except in soup stock) - now some tomato stem ends!! SWEET!!

    This all gets strained through cloth anyways so the ends will add more flavor! THANKS!

  • I always cut out that core part before even slicing. Just cring at the thought of wasting any. See mom I payed attention. Gonna have to pass on your video to some peeps I know.

  • When it comes to home grown tomatos I pick and eat the whole thing with a touch of salt and pepper. My teenaged son watched me do that and was horrified at first, but I convinced him to try it just once and he now eats the whole tomato! To me the stem part is very good too. It can be added finely chopped to a fresh salsa and noone would even know it was there and it wouldn't be wasted either.

  • I can eat them that way to. Like an apple! I'm now wishing it were summer so we could get some GOOD fresh ones!

  • If you have chickens, goats, etc. they love the tomato ends. We used to chop up potato peelings, onions scraps, whatever and cook them up until a little soft..they loved those too.

  • Our chickens would get the tiny core of anything we couldn't eat. They loved the treat!

  • Our tomatoes may differ from yours and of course there are many varieties, I am currently growing 8 types at the moment. I was brought up to never waste anything, that's a lesson for the next generation. Talking of apples, yes I do eat the core it's something I have done since a child after watching my grandfather, It's roughage and good for your system

  • We (in our home) grow several varieties as well. Our favourite are yellow striped heirlooms. Soft & tasty!

    Exactly what my father said -"roughage and good for the system" (o:

    The lessons of not wasting is one I've had to self-teach because my generation by and large (here in the US at least) was not taught frugality too well. Praying my kids have 'got it' from watching us learn! They seem on track!

  • I know. I've seen people do that (toss the tops and bottoms) for real! They just are doing what they've seen someone else do...and it is costly!

    But not EVERYONE here in the USA does that...so...

    Okay - wait - do you eat the stem part?

    My father (from English parents) actually used to eat the whole apple, core and all...

  • I will be making a video soon (probably next weekend) on how to make tomato gravy. We use tomato gravy on biscuits, as that is my husband's favorite. But you can put it on rice too.

  • I absolutely LOVE this. Thank you so much for sharing this because I can't count how many tomato tops and bottoms get tossed in our house during the summer. I saw in your comments where someone was talking about "Tomato Gravy", well that is a favorite amongst my family members (but not myself). What you do is make your basic home made gravy. Once your "roux" begins to form well, and before you add water to it, pour in one can of diced tomatoes with the juice. Stir, then finish your gravy.

  • Oh they sound awesome! My grandparents were a young married couple in the Great Depresssion. Poppie is still alive and well (97)and still practices many of the habits he had in those days. It is amazing what we can learn from a generation that went through that event! Thanks for sharing....now if I can just get milk by horse and buggie....(o:

  • I learned from my late grandparents, they did fairly well food-wise during the Depression in East York, now part of Toronto. Seeds were collected from squash, tomatoes, cukes etc and planted (although cucumbers can take over a garden). Milk was still delivered by horse and carriage, so the poop was collected to scatter into the garden. They composted in a way, they just turned everything over and through in veggie scraps etc. Their soil was just black it was so rich.

    We actually do that here at our home too...well, no dairy delivery...but composting the same way!

    For those who grew gardens in the depression, food was not a problem and no soup lines for them, my grandfather often had enough to share with other hungry people.

    We should all resurrect this art!

  • Great Video! We do the same thing. But he put the "left over tomatoes" into a ziplock bag, freeze and use them for tomatoe gravy.
