So when I first saw the movie, that what I thought: Prot is just a regular guy, who lost his memory due to the terrible event in his life. His mind switched on kind of protection against terrible stress. His knowledge about the space might be, theoretically, gained from his father who taught him about constelations and stars.

As far as CopperFusion's question is conserned: there are documented medical evidence when people after loosing their memories end up with gaining new abilities, for example someone could not remember his name, but he gained the ability to paint like a real Master, other could speak many languages he could not speak prior to the memory loss.

pvvnumber....in order to sustain the plot of the movie they had to maintain the possibility in the audience's mind that his story could possibly be true....but the conclusion certainly sustains konfronto's point of view. So you have to read in between the lines and see how the screenplay was constructed in order to gain a clear understanding...it ain't rocket science..unless maybe you're really young like under 14 ...no offense.

He is an alien. When he 1st visits earth he encounters Robert Porter, he possesses his body & speaks to him through his thoughts & they become best friends. Porter can call Prot when he needs him & when his wife and daughter die, Porter snaps & tries to kill himself, Prot saves him by taking over his mind & body & puts him in a safe place to be taken care of, he trusts Jeff Bridges' character will do that. He takes the girl with him becuz he never wants to return after the loss of his friend

Remember how in hypnoses Prot said that his "friend" called out to him, but did you notice when did he call out to him? He called out to him when he had hard times, like his father's death or learning that his wife is pregnant, or seeing his wife and child get killed. That's not crazy that's sad. Two things that aren't explained are ultra-violet color seeing and the disappearance of Bet. The best idea is that Prot was an alien, but that he on purpose made it all look like he is a fiction in Roberts brain, to escape too much questioning or being captured my humans, and so fort.

@Konfronto The point is, the human brain is such a mystical part of the body, we do not know yet full capabilities of it. So when I first saw the movie, that what I thought: Prot is just a regular guy, who lost his memory due to the terrible event in his life. His mind switched on kind of protection against terrible stress. His knowledge about the space might be, theoretically, gained from his father who taught him about constelations and stars.

@Konfronto That's what it is. Viewers decide themself who is Prot. For me, this is abvious, he is a human. As far as CopperFusion's question is conserned: there are documented medical evidence when people after loosing their memories end up with gaining new abilities, for example someone could not remember his name, but he gained the ability to paint like a real Master, other could speak many languages he could not speak prior to the memory loss.
