  • just love this song!!

  • I had just turned down a young man who wanted to go out with me, all depressed and confused about it, and on the drive home this song came on the radio. When I got home, I called him... Our 35th anniversary was last September :)

  • I'm 20, and listening to this gives me memories of the 70's.

  • fucking awful

  • timoth schmitt really sang back upn on this...r u sure?

  • Wow....The memories this song brings back.

  • Happy Birthday Walter Becker; born on this date in 1950. {Feb. 20th}

  • steely dan is my moms fav band and she still always puts them on all the time. dad is a little feat fan and sometimes they fake fight over whats next lol but both bands r great in their own rite i think in fact i think that they r both fantastic

  • the complete package, talented musicians not like todays fake crap

  • wow, that anti-union advertisement is total bullshit.

  • One of my favorite all time 70s hits. I love Steely Dan's Style and voice.

Definitely an original. Thanks for posting. Peace

  • these guys all went to Bard

  • classic and beautiful....

  • this is music of MY youth and its the music my kids were raised on, it feels so good to hop in my sons car as he turns on the cd player and i hear this.....I did have an influence on him!!

  • rikki don't lose that number is off Countdown to Ecstasy not Pretzel Logic

  • @shumau1 It is from Pretzel Logic

  • @shumau1 - Countdown is my favorite album. I could recite the songs on both sides. Rikki came later. The band's sound was changing by then as well. Pretzel Logic for sure.

  • excellent

  • No other band in the history of popular music so effectively melded Rock and Blues phrasing into jazz structures so effectively , Their arranging skills are peerless , and for all its subtle complexities and virtuostic performances , the music has raw heart and soul and grooves hard , every song these two fuckers wrote was unforgettable....They have always been simultaneously behind the times and ahead of them ,an aural playground of their own .....and dont get me started on their lyrics ..lol

  • @MichaelsPortraits ZOMG, there are intelligent, articulate people posting YouTube comments! Thank you!

  • @Mystakaphoros Your very welcome my friend

    Bridgette

    xoxoxo

  • this brings back so many great memories! thanks!

  • An excellent song, but not one of their best by a long shot. I'm surprised it's one of their most enduringly popular.

  • When I click in the video, it says they're playing at 3rd and LIndsley in Nashville, but it's actually our tribute band. That's wacky.

  • I so love this music I take it with me on my long bus rides from pa to nyc it's definetly has that newyork vibe to it

  • 1o people lost Rikki's number.

  • steely dan was the name of rikki's vibrator.

  • is there any pics of rick derringer

  • the number, the slow hand road, the scared yourself, send it off in a letter to yourself, he's heard your name, lol, old days carte blanche, you could have a change of heart, the chapters of my life in 72 or so....guess you had to be there...maybe i was confused

  • steely was only two

  • I really enjoyed your side show....thankyou

  • Was Rickie a drug addict?

  • 10 people lost Rikki's number. Oh well, Thier loss.

  • I still love this song

  • cool song cool....................

  • This was the bad ass song in my time... still love it! Thanks for posting....!

  • I feel better :)

  • these guys seem more like ahead of their times for the 80's or 90's, but his song was 1974...

  • If you dont like this ..you must not have had live experiences this touches and reverbs and makes me cringe.. these guys can bring up every aspect of life and make it good music...ok ok i am a bit high,,,,

  • Dislike? I don't get it,What's not to like?

  • To me this is the perfect pop song...fell in love with this first time I heard it..for a downbeat song lyrically it makes me feel good.

  • This is the Dan have some respect

  • AWESOME song, AMAZING band !!!

  • Nine people lost there number...

  • @48perkins

    THERE ARE 9 DUMBASSES

  • I loved Pretzel Logic -- what a great reminder of great times and timeless tunes

  • This song brings back the feelings from my high school years in the 70's...hanging with my friends, fixing up our cars and partying with the girls... just enjoying life every single waking hour. Those times were magic. Wish I could go back.

  • @cannine57 Man im with you

  • Summer of 72'! This brings me back. I can still smell the ocean breeze and taste the honeysuckle when I hear this!

  • @koololdster you must have been psychic it was 1974 !

  • @MrSluggo666

Ok, not psychic, just old!! I spent two summers at the Jersey Shore as a teen and the other summer (besides 72' ) was 1974. It had to be the second summer. Age messes with your mind, but good music lasts forever!!

  • @koololdster Amen Brother !

  • @koololdster Great line: "Age messes with your mind, but good music lasts forever." I hope you don't mind if I quote you!

  • @gdub999tube I don't mind at all gdub999tube!! And now to listen to my Steely Dan mix!!!!

  • oh man, takes me right back! weren't they great! play steely all the time on holiday in hot countries, super music, what a great groove!

  • Does anyone know~The lead Vocals have a "serious"Lisp~ I know it was back then~I love the sound~But~DAMN~30 years later~Nobody picks up this~Whats my point~There where better bands~Not 2 taken away from~Just Listen"Damn it"

    Sorry to be so cruel~

  • That solo @ 2:37 is frigging wonderful. He's making that guitar sing.

  • who is the guy in the thumbnail? Also at 2:13

  • @tkarmakid

That's bassist composer Walter Becker. See background info under video for details on personnel.

  • Just wanted to add to the comments to the person who kindly uploaded this song. The reason they have so many other artists of the time playing is that Steely Dan's members were all session artists to begin. They got together and thats why they have such a unique and professional sound. Make sense? One of my most favorite bands of all time!

  • Nice......

  • this is about hitting on a married pregnant woman. no shit.

  • Clapton can live long and suck it. This is the best guitar solo ever.

  • Just beautiful.......Still get 'shivers' when I hear this. Thanks.

  • Steely Dan never gets old.

  • I can't believe how many hits Steely Dan has had. One after another. Very talented folks.

  • Having this name sucks.

  • This is the second slideshow video of mine that You Tube has started putting ads at the beginning (as of today 28 Nov 2011) in addition to the one at the top right hand corner. Grrrrrrrr!

  • @wilsonmcphert no adds, no good music like this. Got to take the good with the bad. Thxs for posting this, love this song

  • @wilsonmcphert I guess a donation button would be better. What do you think? It works for wiki.

  • @wilsonmcphert why shouldnt steely dan be paid for their original work ?? Those ads might give you more Steely dan GIRRRRLL

  • Just Wow!

My older brother had the albums, and turned me on to Steely Dan. This is the best band ever, Fagan and Becker.

  • i love it!!! its so awesome!!!! :)

  • Too bad mustacheboy turned into a wingnut.

  • truly, one of the greatest songs ever written....brilliant

  • this song always reminded me of los angeles in the 70's for some reason

  • @nicoleayanna I agree... "Boogie Nights" (the movie) comes to mind as well...

  • someone try bully me now i would snatch the life out of them loool

  • What a great song and so of it's time. Pure West Coast melodic brilliance.

  • 1:02 that looks like my dad in "75",too funny!

  • Love this song!

  • I'm 20 and feel like this is going to be music of my youth. Proof that great music can still be appreciated by the young folk.

  • @f00lishroy Same thing for me! I'm 20 and I have "Katy Lied" and I'm almost ready to get another Steely Dan album!

  • Exceptional muso`s that have stood the test of time like other bands of that era.....i enjoy it as much now as i did then.....awesome...!

  • this song scared me becasue it sort of stopped me in my tracks, it was my life they were singing....i kept the piece of paper with the phone number in my pocket for a long time, before i finally got better

  • in a mustang...

  • ah yes, this is why I love Steely Dan...

  • I miss my youth....

  • i love you guys!!!

  • The opening Piano Riff was taken from a Horace Silver Jazz tune "Song for my Father

  • @michaelmars128 I can play that on piano!

  • The opening piano riff was first done by Horace Clark in "Song for my Father"

  • supposedly skunk plugged right into the console for this solo!

  • Summer 1974. I was terrorized by some older kids that said in September upon entering Senior high on the first day, I would get beat up with the other freshman. I took off on my Honda trail bike and this song in my head. I remember flying through the fields on the ridge at Old Goodrich Rd., smelling blossoming wild flowers. I always smell them again when I hear this.

  • @rjspeleton Awesome man, I wish that I could have grown up in the 70's!

  • @rjspeleton Good for you! You have triumphed over a really rotten memory!

    Cheer!

    Bridgette

  • @rjspeleton lucky freaking bastard! with your whole dazed and confused life!

  • @rjspeleton Clarence?

  • @mtnredhed Yes!

  • @rjspeleton See, thats exactly the effect music is supposed to have on you. Its the soundtrack of our lives. So so special. Im so envious you were a freshman in 1974. Being in high school in the 70's must of been amazing.

  • @rjspeleton aah the warmth of a live like dazed and confused is what i would have wanted.

  • @rjspeleton soo cool .its a mantra..

  • @rjspeleton what a super -cool memory, I mean not the bullying but the realism you still feel now.

  • @Eleanor8000 Have to confess, I'm from the old school and the bullying part really wasn't bullying from my perspective or memory, its just overcoming adversity. Trust me, losing jobs and trying to make a mortgage payment was far more "bullying" than that ever was. Yes, it was relatively traumatic, but I get an adrenalin hit everytime I remember it. Guess its all in how you choose to let things control your memories...or whether you control them! I actually thank God for the experience!

  • driving a car, summer time... taking a bath in the middle of the night.... oh I love this song

  • ES UN MUY BUENA CANCION DE LOS QUE FUIMOS AMANTES DEL BUEN ROCK DE HACE BASTANTES AÑOS SIN EMBARGO NOS SIGUE GUSTANDO.

    VIVA EL ROCK.

    HUGO

  • Yeah, sorry but he looks creepy.

  • skunk !

  • Que buenísima canción, yo la escuchaba cuando tenia 16 años en la vieja estación Radio Hit´s de FM en la Cd. de México (1976), saludos cordiales

  • Had a good friend in high school named Rikki-short for Erika-and this song used to really irritate her! Great song but good way to get on her bad side real quick.

  • I love how this song starts but hate how it takes a poppy twist all of a sudden.

  • Try 10cc for an english style of this

  • The 70's had so much stupid music, it was discouraging. Then these guys came along and lifted popular music to a whole new level. It rocked, the lyrics were fascinating, if inscrutable, and there were riffs and influences from the best jazz. So many musicians I know agree we never would have made it through the silly 70's without Steely Dan. And today they still live and play great.

  • I REMEMBER THIS --WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF WE COULD STAY YOUNG AND LIVE WHERE WE WERE RIGHT WHEN WE HEARD THIS SONG? dIDN'T THINK SO, BUT THE SONG IS GREAT..

  • gosh their good...what happened?

  • @brotherdarek What happened in regards to....?

  • @MrDaGeil in regards to ....good music on am radio! It staggers the mind to think that this was what we USED to have available on am radio...It's just stellar lined up next to much of what you can hear on the am dial now...fm radio can give us some of what we used to have...sigh. They are just so great.

  • Very COOL! With all the layers of guitar on this, I assumed Denny was an integral part. I guess Skunk gets all the credit for this smokin' favorite! No matter how many times I hear it, I NEVER tire. In fact, I love it even more. IMO, their finest. Back in those days, Timothy was with Poco, I believe. Incestuous Industry (in a good way, LOL)

  • timeless

  • 7 people lost the number.

  • You can never go wrong with Steely Dan as the background at your party, no matter who might be there.

[from a guy that uses Lemmy for an avitar]

  • the good old 70s! real music back then....

  • @clouds882 damm right.

  • Makes you want to play air guitar.

  • at the time just another record in the charts but looking back now these songs were awsome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing, the intro is from Song For My Father by Horace Silver (1963) !!!! Which is still a proof that Donald Fagen was fond of jazz..

  • @freddiefreejazzify fond of jazz or just fond of "borrowing" melodies but none the less such a great tune and oh yeah, song for my father was released in 1964 (?) and and this tune was released in 1974. Just another cowinkadink

  • @freddiefreejazzify That's what I thought. Now I know.

  • Another classic '70's song!

  • badass

  • ahh, the good ole days..

  • Ahh.. As a man of color, I must say, The Good ole' days were never that good. Ahh!

  • -I hope everyone has started to notice- JIM GORDON is a Drumming god, seemingly brushed under the carpet. I swear i asked to many "drummers" who their favorite was and no one knew who Gordon(who cares waht he did to his family lol) was when I would say his name as MY Favorite. BOMB!

  • Had the pleasure of seeing Steely Dan in 1973 and 1995. Without a doubt the best live band I have ever seen.

  • Who is Rikki and why in the world would he loose that number? What number is it that he isn't supposed to loose??

  • @greta242 Rick Derringer...

  • Me too man, God this music is the bomb!!!!!Love those carefree days.

  • MISS THOSE DAYS FEEL YOUNG AGAIN

  • who wrote this song? (great song)

  • 1974? for real? where's my life going? I know it's true because I remember hearing it in kindergarten but DAM I thought I was like 22 this year

  • Beautiful.

  • she lost mine.... i remember it well :(

  • pilgrym ......... re live the 70's? boy mee too!

  • great song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish I could relive the 70's. peace ^

  • @xyzpilgram Right on, brother man. Make me young again.

  • Goin to see them next wed in Omaha, cant freakin wait !!!!

  • The sign of good music is that it sounds BETTER over time. Unlike most of what comes out in today's world...

  • One of my alltime favorites!

  • I met Jeff Baxter at a Freind's wedding!!! :)

  • these guys smoke way too much pot....

  • Very, very cool slide show and info here, thanks!

  • i remember listening to this on the radio.great songs of the past.

  • Damn these guys were good.....heard it all first hand.....thanks Steely Dan!!!!!

  • Pleasant memories...

  • I first heard this song driving with my dad and I still love it. Please don't post negative comments to this.

  • Little correction to add to the discussion. Actually, Rikki Ducornet is the basis for this song. (as an aside, Rickie Lee Jones wrote "Chuck E.'s In Love," using Chuck E. Weiss as title character, althought they don't seem to have been involved...)

  • for such precise credits..where is THE MAN...the man they credit....Roger Nichols?

  • Tis ok to steal from Horace Silver...that's not stealing...that's tribute....how many pop players COULD immulate Mr. Silver? yer pal, Rama Lama

  • @TheRaamaa right you are!

  • intro isdefinatley taken from horace silver

  • i hope she didnt lose that #

  • awesome!!!

  • one of my favs...great break and bridge ..i belive this song is about rick derringer

  • Rikki was Rickie Lee Jones, a real talent in her own right, who was dating Walter at the time. "Chuckie's in Love" was back to him.

  • @TSaxman74 .No shit..I was right all along. I always thought that. Thanks for confirming.

  • how can there be 3 dislikes?!?! what is there to dislike? if people are disliking great songs such as this one because they don't like them...why are they looking it up to listen to???

  • Comment removed

  • thank u for having this chance listen
