@TheCeejReturns ah, yes, but remember that as far as 'they' are concerned, only THEIR god(s) is/are real. If you don't believe in THEIR 'god' you are, as far as 'they' are concerned, an 'atheist'. The word was in fact invented by 'them' as a finger pointing exercise, a way of saying ZOMG you're not like us. Meh.
What's in a name? If the refusal to collect stamps caused one to to be marginalized by society, kept from public office, burned at the stake as witches, beaten to death by felow soldiers, fired from jobs, and so forth, then you might wish to adopt the label of aphilatelist in an attempt to reclaim your human and civic rights. Thank you for posting this clear explanation of the nature of naming.
You said that we theists make athiestism a problem but that is not so. I did not have problem with Sam Haris's athiesm it is he who has a problem with my theism. Nor did I have a problem with Richard Dawkins but he has condemned me as being evil for my beliefs.
Nobody's condemning you. What would they be condemning you to? On the other hand, though, there are plenty of theists out there - and I'm not saying you're one of them - who will gleefully condemn atheists and their ilk to eternal suffering.
So true, it seems that the religious mind is never satisfied. Even if a problems does go away it'll either make a new one or there will be others to resolve. It's a shame that they can't see the futility in this.
Then again I think the same is somewhat true for non believers in reducing the number & effects of religion on the worlds population.
We do not 'believe' evolution is true. We saw lots of facts, drew conclusions and made sound theories that were confirmed by the many different areas of science such as astronomy, physics, chemistry and biology. i.e. the universe is expanding, doppler effect confirms this, the universe is big, light speed is limited so the universe HAS to be old (cannot be 6000 y/o) tectonic plates, old fossils, about everything rules out Intelligent Design.
Well said, even if I didn't call myself the "A" word, there is still a majority of people who care whether I believe in a god or not. How about we call ourselves "nonfictionalists"?
U present a valid point to the theists. I don't think however that the problem will go away if the theists stop making it a problem. Some atheists will still be pushing the issue to make religion as a whole to go away.
Yeah, but they would be doing that then because religion would be incompatible with some ideological notions. For example communism. They were atheists, of course, but they persecuted religious people not because they were atheists, but because they thought religion would subvert their communist ideology.
Although I agree with the video, you're talking out both sides of your mouth. You propose Atheists will stop calling themselves that when religious zealots stop persecuting them, but then at every turn you mock the religious.
As someone who is neither religious or atheist I'm tired of the conflict. And although "your side" didn't start it, it sure does nothing to soothe it. Rather it feeds off it as a parasite to promote counter-ideals.
"You must be the change you wish to see in the worlds."
There's a huge difference between mockery and persecution. I've been mocked many times before and I have no problem with it. But don't condemn me. Don't persecute me.
Show me where I've ever condemned a theist. I may judge some forms of beliefs to be ridiculous, but you'll never hear me state that I feel someone deserves to suffer for it.
Mockery is a form of persecution, albeit a slight one. What makes kids cry at night after they come home from school after being teased in the yard? What drives a laughed at fat woman to reach for the ice cream when she feels sad about her appearance? Sure it's not condemning to hell. But it creates a personal, internal hell. And all in all just doesn't help resolve issues regarding the matters that separate us into prefabricated groups.
The effect is important, as innocent as mockery may seem.
Certainly, but I'd like to think that that is not the sort of mockery I engage in. If something is stupid, however, it does need to be pointed out. Some beliefs - SOME - are truly, monumentally stupid. There is no point beating around the bush about that, nor does it make sense to treat those things with kid gloves. And you would be wise to nuanciate your judgement too.
Secondarily, no, there's no point in beating around the bush. But being polite draws people forth to at least TRY to see something from your POV. Take my comment as a suggestion of tact. Nothing more.
And for the record, I DO find your teasing witty. But you're still a jerk :P
Indeed. You don't call yourself an a-[entersomethingherethatnobodybelievesin], precisely because nobody will even *think* about making an issue out of that. It's only when they suddenly start condemning you for not believing in The Glurb that you have to start defending your position as an aglurbist, and so a new label is born.
ahaha.. you gravitists crack me up. Stuck in your 2d world pinned to the dirt by your own foolish belief in gravitons. Agravitists everywhere are rising!
It's funny in a way... The people with belief systems they claim are so holy... Hardcore Christians and Muslims... Those are the ones that will probably drag us into World War 3.

Theists do not, or just will not, admit to understanding this about us. That we "just are" atheists because it's a matter of conscience which prevents us from believing in the things they [claim they] do. The conscience is something which cannot be violated at will while also requiring ourselves to remain completely honest.
"One does not become an atheist to gain emotional comfort or popularity. One becomes an atheist because honesty compels." ~ John B. Hodges
Very true about the honesty. That is what I try to explain to so many theists. My strict scepticism toward their idea is actually a mark of respect. I want to take them seriously, so I scrutinise their claims in minute details. I don't just accept them willy-nilly. After all, if I did that I could just as easily accept the claims of some other crowd. One of the many "false" religions. And then you get called "closed-minded". (shrug)
I've always like the term "atheist," myself. I've never seen it as derogatory before. OTOH, I think it should be broken down further, like the Christians break their denominations and sects down, to more accurately describe what we do believe individually.
I have been a "non-believer" for many years, and have only in the last few years begun to call myself an atheist. It's funny, but I've met other atheists over the years, and have read atheist literature, but it's actually been Youtube--of all things--that allows me to listen to the thoughts and connect with other atheists.
Who would have thunk it. Youtube bringing atheists together.
Yeah. Same here. At 11 I realised people called me "atheist". Then I went through a phase of calling myself "agnostic". But I soon realised that people determined to hate you for not believing will do so no matter how mildly you state your non-belief. So now I proudly call myself the word they hate the most.
Yeah, but haven't you ever heard people snigger about how "happy" someone is, really meaning to say that they're happy like in a bit dim-witted? I thought that is how the term "gay" came to be used for homosexuals; people were affronted by the campness of some homosexuals and started using the word "gay" in a derogatory manner to imply a mental deficiency of some kind. But according to auchraw's comments I may have been wrong on that count
i didn't call myself atheist until I joined youtube, although I've never been a theist. I'm bemused by the whole thing. Is religion still potent in Holland? I'm assuming it is in Eire.
