You Fuck. Modes, scales, notes, positions, chords are all done in Guitar school. When you finish school, (5-8 years), then you can open peoples vaults and get the most from them. the licks, chords, notes all overlay your knowledge of modes and scales. You are diong more damage than good. Teachers like you are why noone knows guitar anymore.
@frwyguy All Robert is saying is that you can get to know your scales and theory through learning to physically play music first. Learn to get your fingers moving in a way to make great music and then figure out why it works. Is it so bad doing it the other way round? And this is aimed at people who have at least already got a basic fundamental grasp of theory anyway...can't imagine many beginners wanting to attempt this!
Wow! I came on here, did a search for Jazz Guitar and Mr. Conti came up. Absolutely amazing and exactly what I was hoping to find. I immediately subscribed. Simply watching I picked up little nuances in his fingerings, right hand, etc. What an incredible talent.
His bio is on wikipedia. Robert was born in Philadelphia in 1945. Why don't you go and read about the man (and what he has done with his life) before you go and post stupid shit, like calling him a mobster.
I've been playing guitar for almost 8 years now and I gotta tell ya... bebop style licks are just REALLY F*CKING HARD. I hope someday I can pull off these licks.
Hey can someone tell me the song that starts around 2:10? I'm still new to the whole jazz genre. i particularly like that type of jazz compared to slower jazz.. Is there a particular name for it? Is it its own subgenre? Someone please respond it would be much appreciated.
@pw3db4lunch This is jazz played against a standard, warhorse tune like Cherokee. Robert's superior improv skills give it new life. It is a very mainstream sound except for what he does to it. Actually, you can' t wrap
yourself around a definition, unless one gets very technical & boring. You are hearing a very unusual musician
playing his ass off and enjoying the challenge his talent laying itself before you. Your best bet is to listen & enjoy.
i had a nightmare of this guy and in it he kept jving his head to his guitar playing in a real im better than you and im going to kill you after this solo way
I'm in about my third week of working on Robert Conti's Chord Melody Assembly Line. Learning stuff every practice session. I'm a fairly decent blues player and old 560's rock and roller, but I'm beginning to catch on. I can tear Oh Suzanna up LOL
I'm a working piano player of 40 some years, but I couldn't take my eyes or ears off this cat ! Wow ! I actually enjoy listening to him as much as I do Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Eldar, etc. I've also checked out his study methods and IMHO they are great ! Just the way I learned.....from the other/older cats. Lastly, having taught at the HS & JC level, I cannot agree more that the "theory" part WILL COME as a BY-PRODUCT of your playing.Dig in!!
I have been thinking there is a way to play like this. Beautiful music and I am excited to begin learning this approach. Just amazing. Thank you Robert!
Bravo,Robert .I subscibe to your way of thinking.I believe that modal theory is very limiting.I like the way you use the full register of the guitar as well.Great playing.
Well, He's right! If you use modes what happens is you tend to sound like you're playing scale exercises instead of creating melodies! Horn players spent more time studying arpeggios because that was the only way they could understand harmony since they played non-polyphonic instruments. Then they used the notes of the arpeggios and rearranged them into linear structures. so really you need 2 thing: A thorough understanding of harmony and linear structures. Then learn to use motifs!
It is a prototype made in early 2007 to Robert's specs, i.e. (Solid Spruce Top: 24 Frets; Quality Pickup & Tuners, Ebony Fretboard etc.). During the past 2 years, he has played that instrument continuously, as seen in several You Tube clips and his last 7 DVDs. The production model of the new "Conti" Jazz Guitar will become available in mid May 2009.
Oh thank u..can u help me..am new to guitars..so basicly i like the sound of acoustic, luv the body of semi-acoustic thin body type, dislike acoustics body..i want a guitar which wud blend with songs u know...pl help..thanks!
robert what can i say ,i just want to thank you for posting on youtube . i have always liked certain types of jazz ,i dont know something just clicks when i hear it so thank you, you are a truly great player.
Why can I respect the hell out guitar players like him, but not really want to listen to this kind of music on a daily basis? Jazz just doesn't do it for me and I don't know why.
I just watched this video and over my shoulder was my guitar, propped against the wall and apparently watching too, for when I reached for it, it looked askance at me and I swear I thought I heard it say, "Don't dare touch me, you incompetent amateur!"
I read in one of the interviews posted on his website that he uses a .38 pick. I've never tried one that flimsy, but his rationale is sound: keep resistance to a minimum. Anyway, I'm off to work on his arrangements of "America the Beautiful" and "Amazing Grace."
I received my first Conti DVD in the mail only a couple of days ago and have already leant more about playing Jazz guitar in the last few days than I have in the last 25years of playing.
Conti is an AWESOME jazz guitarist! I have been playing guitar 35 years and I have listened to thousands of players. Robert is as good as any. Plus his teaching materials are a pure blessing. He teaches everyone how to play jazz without holding a gun to their heads to study modes, scales and such. He doesn't place himself on a pedestal and look down on you because you can't read music or know a hundered scales. I can now play beautiful chord melody because of his lessons! Thanks Robert!
If you don't think Robert Conti is a monster guitarist, then you know NOTHING about jazz guitar. Go listen to the 'shredders' (yawn) if your ear hasn't developed yet. Come back when you can play with the BIG BOYS like Conti, Martino, Bruno, Benson and the like.
It seems to me, Bob is far from being overrated. He has done his homework, lays down fluid lines, very clean chops, and does it pretty darn flawlessly if you ask me.
There aren't many guys out there with that kind of command of their instrument. If the lines don't move you, that's personal taste, but it is hard to ignore the ease with which he puts it all together. Only a handful in the world can do that.
It must be really tough for you trying to get through life as a loser who is too stupid to comprehend the skill of a player like Robert Conti. Tell me and perhaps the other readers here, what have you accomplished besides being a world-class idiot?
oh come on everyone, this guy is good but not THAT great. its obvious that conti is creating several different youtube accounts, and getting them to post positive comments and deflective negative ones like negninorgs. check out the comments from '7J7e7f7f7, jackdapicker, and guitarlover38.' they all initial their comments at the end. coincidence? i think not. a good business ploy by conti. work on your time feel by the way, it would make more your playing much more listenable.
I agree with 7J7E7F7F7. For you to make a moron comment like that, I would also like to see what you can actually play. Conti overrated? I'm always amazed that people who make nit wit comments like yours never have any level of skill more than an amateur. I've made a living playing jazz for more years than you've probably been alive. I would like to attain the skill you call overrated. Waiting to see what negninorg can play? In fact, post your version of Cherokee at the same tempo.
clever of you, conti to make all comments go through you before they get posted. real, real smart. in doing this conti completely controls the way his videos are perceived by normal viewers. 71 ratings, and 5 stars? for this 'conti' guy? lets put all this 'building up' aside- no one knows who conti is. he is not a famous figure (or even a minor figure) in jazz guitar by any means. it'll be a MIRACLE if this comment, or my previous comment gets posted. i can almost garauntee that it wont.
What is your problem....robbbb? There is NOTHING dishonest about Robert Conti. If you don't know who he is then get your head out of your ass and look. Go somewhere else if you don't like this video. Trust me, nobody here will miss you smart ass!
What's sad about characters like "robbb" is that if you were to put the most basic chart in front of them and asked them to comp a simple four to the bar pattern of the changes they couldn't do it if their life depended on it. They're angry because they lack the discipline to master even the basics so they lash out at those who have talent.
Overrated in what way? How many guys do you think are out there that can play at his level. Perhaps you should do some research on him or any accomplished player before making a ridiculous comment. Actually ignorant is a much better word for your comment.
Lfunkey, not as difficult as you think? I'm an above average Joe. If it is not that difficult, please, give me your demonstration of how easily YOU can duplicate what he plays.
but with some time and effort in learning the basic grips he demos, this material is learnable.
A few yrs ago I had no chance to play this stuff.
Never thought I would be able to.
But finally my left hand is able to 'get there' in time.
Trick is having some one like RC to take the time and have the patience to go thru it at this slow pace in digestible chunks. But...it DOES take effort and concentration.
he's got the perfect touch... and he makes it look so effortless.. i have all his chord melody dvds and they are worth their weight in gold. thanks for the inspiration and the tools to make it happen.
No, I strongly disagree. Conti epitomizes the art of burning BeBop Jazz Guitar. Can you play anything even close to the complex lines that he plays at that tempo? Please post a video clip of yourself demonstrating a "time feel" that makes you "happy."
I've been playing over 45 years and just for the passion and enjoyment. I've played every style, blues, jazz, rock, celtic, you name it. I order my first DVd from Conti about a month ago and it was like I had never played. He translated all of my interests in straight forward easy to understand instruction.Yes, Joe Pass was great, but he never was able to talk to me in the way that Conti does.I've learned more in 6 weeks than in the last 30 years. That's all that counts for me.Great job Robert.
Unbelievable talent! I've seen him play in person a few times in SoCal and Las Vegas, he really is a one of a kind player. You would think a guy with his talent would have an attitude, but he is a very friendly type of guy.
Finally! I have found another person to add to my list of players who truly use the guitar like an extension of their own body. This man knows how to play. Thanks for posting!!!!
I wrote to his website when I saw him play this guitar on his Someone To Light Up My Life video. You can see the whole guitar in that video. It has his name in the headstock and his office told me it is the prototype for his private brand production guitar. It sure is a nice looking guitar and sounds great(IMO). Although he could probably make anything sound good.
hi there, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't impressed by your playing, as it's simply magnificent. i'm intrigued by your teaching program, what i'd like to know is whether you're actually explaining the theory behind all your work in your videos or simply just showing the viewer how to play the particular lick you played? or would you go yeah, here's an Am7, you can play a A7b5 and here's how i would do it?
You Fuck. Modes, scales, notes, positions, chords are all done in Guitar school. This man is good but I'm never happy with his time feel. Does anyone agree?
Asicaster 3 years ago
Asicaster,
No, I strongly disagree. Conti epitomizes the art of burning BeBop Jazz Guitar. Can you play anything even close to the complex lines that he plays at that tempo? Please post a video clip of yourself demonstrating a "time feel" that makes you "happy."

that's cause he uses a lot of sextuplets and rhythmic figures and combinations of that sort

What brand/model of guitar is this?
mrsrp 4 years ago
I wrote to his website when I saw him play this guitar on his Someone To Light Up My Life video. You can see the whole guitar in that video. It has his name in the headstock and his office told me it is the prototype for his private brand production guitar. It sure is a nice looking guitar and sounds great(IMO). Although he could probably make anything sound good.

hi there, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't impressed by your playing, as it's simply magnificent. i'm intrigued by your teaching program, what i'd like to know is whether you're actually explaining the theory behind all your work in your videos or simply just showing the viewer how to play the particular lick you played? or would you go yeah, here's an Am7, you can play a A7b5 and here's how i would do it?
if it's the latter then i'm more than interested!
